i agree i was going to post this myself as a bug/missed feature. since
we aren't going to use xscreensaver anymore we should have functionality
in gnome screensaver that would allow it to detect when a xscreensaver
application wants the screensaver not to be disabled (e.g. gmplayer).

I just did an upgrade, and though I've now switched to experimenting with
ntfs-3g, the experimental driver which will be merged into ntfs-progs, the
problem is the same. What's interesting is, that once I restarted after the
upgrade (which included a new kernel), the HAL demon failed to start.
I have tracked down the bug and submitted the patch to gnome-bugs
#171938. This is my first patch ever and I'm rather curious how things
go on from here :)

Updating the firmware on the dvd drive seems to have solved the problem
for me. I used the firmware update from the Dell support site (version
TD17) on my Compaq V2000 with a PHILIPS SCB5265. The update took a good
three minutes, but I haven't had any problems so far.

There is not much consistency between menu systems (firefox, oo, different
win32 versions, all behave different in detail), so thats not a strong
argument.
Look at bug 128968 for similar issues, not sure if it is an
that's not likely to do a difference, upstream does that on his free
time, you can't force him to write documentation, the best you can do
and write some and send a patch

One month later and still no solution, or at least, not a permanent one.
I have this same annoying bug (Failed to initialize HAL after adding
smbfs share to /etc/fstab), however only when I boot with kernel
2.6.15-26-386. Booting with a previous version of the kernel,
2.6.15-23-386, everything is

I don't think so but my half-solution plus that wish (bug #22876) equal
this problem is fixed the ugly way : I think the problem is that the
'master' control don't control the whole sound system.

Steps to reproduce:

Default Dapper version of RB. DAAP sharing works perfectly. It is not
the problem.
Problem is: RB doesn't list any other shares. It does share, but cannot
play what others share.
