Does this apply to Totem as well? I noticed that Totem has problems opening files on SMB gnomevfs mounts. [Bug 67385] Re: Opening a file in gedit on a gnome-vfs share fails
@Rouben. Yes this happens with Totem as well, even with the same error message. Originally I filed two separate bugs, one for Gedit and one for Totem. Caroline Ford has merged the two into one as shown in an earlier comment; the Totem-bug is apparantly completely wiped away, I cannot find this one anymore, even when using expert search and turning 'Rejected' and 'Fix released' on. From a technical point of view, the problem could be in the underlying package (gnome-vfs) or in the implementation of gnome-vfs by other packages such as gedit and totem. The fact that this problem is detected in two separate packages in the same time, could indicate that it's the underlying packages., i.e. gnome-vfs. But since this is only an assumption, this can only be sorted out by looking to the code it self (which must be done by a developer). -- Opening a file in gedit on a gnome-vfs share fails https://launchpad.net/bugs/67385 -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
Re: [Bug 66896] Re: gnome-search-tool doesn't find text in ODF files
Sebastien Bacher schreef: Thanks for your bug. Apparently .odt is not a text format, that's not something gnome-utils can change and not really a bug, marking as rejected. Feel free to reopen if you disagree Thanks for formulating the bug in another way. However, it's still a bug. please reopen. As far as I'm concerned, .doc is not a text format either and gnome-search-tool can still find the text in those documents. What you're saying is that people who want to search for text in documents shouldn't be using gnome-searchtool, or ODF. Well, then the search tool shouldn't be pretending that it can find text in documents, because it cannot. So maybe that feature should be removed from gnome-search-tool, because it doesn't work for the people it is intended for. If a user is tech-savvy enough to know that ODF files are really zipfiles containing xml, and that he should use zipgrep if he wants to find text in a document, he wouldn't be using gnome-search-tool in the first place. One can't expect a user that uses gnome-search-tool to know the technical intricacies of certain file formats. That's why we have graphical applications, hiding those details. And if those applications don't do what the user can reasonably expect, it's a bug. [Bug 68574] Issue with (mostly) fat32 devices, and HAL fails to even initialize after new login
Public bug reported: This issue seems to be caused, or perhaps may have been uncovered, by a fix for a nautilus crasher bug, that I reported earlier: https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/47619 I was going to file this report under the nautilus package, but as you will see, I later found out this seems to have more serious systemwide implications I'm currently still using Dapper, with all the updates from dapper-updates + dapper-backports. 1. nautilus works fine for some time. 2. after some time not touching nautilus (a few hours, in my case overnight), changing directories on a few filesystems (so far seems only fat32 filesystems, ext3 gives no issue) freezes nautilus with 0% CPU usage. 3. the solution has been to either attach a debuger, get a backtrace, and detach it; this usually unfreezes nautilus, or simply kill the nautilus process. 4. after this, trying to browse folders on a fat32 fs (but not opening the device's root directory), or trying to move something to the trashbin (no matter what fs), freezes nautilus as well. 5. So since nautilus won't work correctly, I try to log out from the logout dialogue. This doesn't log me out, so I have to press ctrl+alt+backspace. 6. When I log back in from gdm, the the desktop doesn't load correctly; the gnome panels don't load completely (i.e. appear blank) and nautilus doesn't seem to load at all. More importantly, I get a warning saying the system couldn't load HAL: Internal error: failed to initialize HAL! 7. So I try to get a screenshot of the warning, I run ksnapshot from a console, that was called by a custom keyboard shortcut alt+F3, since alt+F2 won't bring up the 'run command' dialogue. 8. I take the screenshot, but when I try to save it, the save dialogue for selecting the filename gives me an error when it tries to read a folder, i.e. I am unable to see any files since the save dialogue can't recognize any folders, but I manage to save the image. 9. I finally decide to just reboot. A few notes: - I still haven't figured out how to trigger this bug. - It seems to me only newly started apps are affected by this, for example, when this bug is active, amarok hangs when I try to load it. - if this really is related to HAL, would it help to get some sort of debug info about it? ** Affects: hal (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed -- Issue with (mostly) fat32 devices, and HAL fails to even initialize after new login https://launchpad.net/bugs/68574 -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
