I believe the problem was in my .asoundrc
I deleted my .asoundrc and then reconfigured alsa and it works
This is NOT because my .asoundrc was wrong in dapper.
It is just that the alsa hda-intel drivers are changing rapidly between
versions of alsa.

One more attempt by deleting the gpilotd config file caused the applet
to reconfigure the gpilot. I attempted to set it to usb; but that
complained with the visor module still running. So I selected the
dev/ttyUSB1 which sync'd correctly and repeatedly.

but I don't remember how it was named. It was easy to find it, because
the other names were clear. I thought, this was due to the fact that I
was using in my office thunderbird before, which was creating a trash

I have upgraded from Dapper to Edgy before a month or so and everything was
running smoothly till week ago. When I am logging into Ubuntu, I got the same
message as above described "Failed to initialize HAL". The Problem seems to be,
that dbus is not being starting properly or at the right
gnome bug #336719 was marked duplicate of gnome bug 330693.
