[Bug 83334] Re: Number of workspaces number-field arrow buttons dont work.

2007-02-20 Thread Philip Wyett
If adjustment is made to the spin button step and page values we see the
following bug appear. Though the single stepping works fine, when you
click and hold down the mouse button for faster stepping, metacity
crashes after a visible refresh of the whole dialog box.

[Bug 61381] Re: gnome-settings-daemon crashes at login

2007-02-20 Thread sleuth
After spending all day fighting nomachines windows client, freenx
server, nomachines nxserver, on opensuse 10.2 with gnome. I found that
turning off ESD in the gnome control center sound screen solved the
error described above. I had tried commenting the hosts file for IP6 and
it didn't work. Additionally I found that when logged in locally with a
gnome session, when the error was encountered on the remote machine, a
gnome control center window popped up.

[Bug 86448] Totem crashes when attempting to play some RTSP streams from a Darwin Streaming Server

2007-02-20 Thread Eric Kerby
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: totem

Steps to reproduce:
Click on an rtsp link to one of these files in Firefox
or
Open Totem
Movie Open Location...
Enter rtsp://stream.kerbyserver.net/sample_100kbit.mov without quotes

(this one happens with sample_100kbit.mp4, sample_300kbit.mp4, and
sample_50kbit.3gp)
or
An Error Occurred
The stream is in the wrong format.
(this one happens with sample_h264_100kbit.mp4, sample_h264_1mbit.mp4,
sample_h264_300kbit.mp4)

[Bug 85875] Re: When modifying the volume with the keyboard, Ubuntu sometimes freezes

2007-02-20 Thread Higinio Raventós
I use Ubuntu 7.04 Herd 4. I do not use a composite manager. I use GNOME-
Metacity.

Yes, when it freezes I can yo to a command line.

( 2 ) By the way, when I decrease the volume until it reaches the
minimum (silent) and does not freeze, I cannot increase it using the
keyboard. I have to do it manually with gnome's the volume bar.

I cannot find anything related to the problem in those files, neither
reproduce the freeze. I can reproduce ( 2 ).

[Bug 49220] Re: [Edgy] Broken packages while trying to install libgtk2.0-dev

2007-02-20 Thread Steve White
Sebastian,

The problem plainly has nothing to do with Adept or Kubuntu, per se.
It is a package problem.

It might be that I have mis-configured my repositories somehow, but
besides enabling the repositories that were provided by my distro, the
only repository I have enabled was the one you suggested.

The bug persists, and we don't know what its root is.

You seem to know something about repositories...can you look again at
the ones I have enabled, and see if something is amiss?

[Bug 61381] Re: gnome-settings-daemon crashes at login

2007-02-20 Thread sog
summary:
similar problem here. cannot start GNOME or Beryl sessions on the machines,
splash screen hangs on Metacity.

Failsafe GNOME will boot, but kicks the above warning:

first error:
Unable to determine the address of the message bus (try 'man dbus-launch' and
'man dbus-daemon' for help)

if i try to launch Sound preferences, i get a second error:

second error:
Unable to start the settings manager 'gnome-settings-daemon'.
Without the GNOME settings manager running, some preferences may not take
effect. This could indicate a problem with Bonobo, or a non-GNOME (e.g. KDE)
settings manager may already be active and conflicting with the GNOME settings
manager.

if i then try to run gnome-settings-daemon in the console, i get a third
error:

third error:
(gnome-settings-daemon:6669): GSwitchIt-WARNING **: Unable to connect to dbus:
Unable to determine the address of the message bus (try 'man dbus-launch' and

** (bug-buddy:6675): WARNING **: Couldn't load icon for Open Folder

solutions tried so far:
1. apt-get --reinstall install dbus beryl metacity (no effect)
2. commenting out IPv6 lines in host file (no effect)
3. disabling ESD in sound settings (no effect)
4. checked /etc/network/interfaces (nothing there that shouldn't be)

platform:
edgy, with beryl installed and running successfully for several days (until
this error)

versions:
dbus - 0.93-0ubuntu3
metacity - 2.16.3-0ubuntu
beryl - 0.1..2~0be

caused by:
unclear. have been running, as mentioned, beryl but to date had virtually no
problems - and none seemingly related to this. error occured after a fresh
reboot with no new packages installed (AFAIK).

looks to me like everything traces back to dbus, but i'm no expert. any
help appreciated. i'm functional in GNOME Failsafe, but not loving it.

[Bug 16454] Re: sound still comes out of speakers when PCM volume is set to 0

2007-02-20 Thread kko
Hello.

I've been wondering at the same issue on Kubuntu Dapper. Sound output is
functional when PCM _or_ master volume is set to 0. Only when _either_
one of these gets muted (from e.g. kmix), does sound output stop.

I'll attach the requested files (with the prefix 1.). PCM_0 and
master_0 indicate the volume is set to 0 on the indicated channel.
Here's the relevant output from 'diff':

$ diff 1.amixer.PCM_0 1.amixer.PCM_0.muted
52,53c52,53
Front Left: Playback 0 [0%] [on]
Front Right: Playback 0 [0%] [on]
---
Front Left: Playback 0 [0%] [off]
Front Right: Playback 0 [0%] [off]

diff 1.amixer.master_0 1.amixer.master_0.muted
6,7c6,7
Front Left: Playback 0 [0%] [on]
Front Right: Playback 0 [0%] [on]
---
Front Left: Playback 0 [0%] [off]
Front Right: Playback 0 [0%] [off]

PS. The volume control in alsa acts somewhat strangely. With PCM volume
at reasonable levels, the master volume slider doesn't affect the
audible volume for roughly half the way from zero upwards. Only when
above this threshold, does the audible volume change. Is there a
technical (hardware) reason for why this happens? Or is this an issue
that would warrant a separate bug report?

[Bug 85828] Re: Rhythmbox crashes while playing MP3

2007-02-20 Thread Joe Bradley
Regarding the Mp3, it is copyrighted, so I doubt I can post it as an
attachment. Sending it to you directly may be within fair use
guidelines; let me know if that is something you want me to do.

As far as the debug session - sorry, you'll have to tell me... thread
apply all what? I need the command. Also, there are no debugging
symbols, if that's important I'll have to set that up as well.

I'm guessing that since you asked about a backtrace I should do this:

(gdb) thread apply all backtrace

[Bug 86473] Properties button for alacarte

2007-02-20 Thread Mårten Woxberg
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: alacarte

When trying to edit the menus the only way I can change an item is to:

1. Select it
2. Right click
3. Select properties

Or I can:
1. Select it
2. Press Enter/space
(This way I only noticed since I did this bugreport)

Instead I want a button below New separator that does the same thing.
It would of course be grayed out when nothing is selected.

Pressing Enter feels very strange since it looks to me like the Close
button is the primary action for Enter.

** Affects: alacarte (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: Unconfirmed

[Bug 85998] Re: 'Places'-'Computer' opens a wrong folder for an umnounted device

2007-02-20 Thread lexan
It happens for all sorts of media, Diskettes, CD-ROMs, MMC cards etc., on
different machines. The important part is that the device should not be mounted
when you click on it, otherwise you would not notice this bug. I've just tried
it again to make sure, it's still there.
Do it like this:
1) Insert a CD, it will get auto mounted by default
2) type unmount /media/cdrom0
3) click on the CD-ROM icon in 'Computer'

[Bug 33753] Re: don't use OpenGL savers if no hardware support

2007-02-20 Thread Ralf Nieuwenhuijsen
In feisty: It seems by default the screensavers are set to just blank
the screen now.

But its been a while since I installed feisty. Can some one confirm
this?

Then we can close this bug..
Black screen by default seems a very acceptable solution.
It just means that with a default installation there will be no random freezes
when using drivers with flaky opengl support.

Then we can close this bug..
IMO, the bug would still be valid, because if the screensaver is set to
Random it should not cause extreme CPU utilisation.

[Bug 86191] Re: HAL Device Manager is hard to use

2007-02-20 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
The immediate problem of identifying CPU type and speed could be solved
by packaging and shipping About Window https://launchpad.net/about-
window as a replacement for the existing About Ubuntu menu item.
(Disclosure: I designed About Window.)

The problem of Device Manager being difficult to use is a much more
general one -- it is probably better addressed by a proper design
process, including talking with the people involved in Ubuntu hardware
certification (since they probably use it most).

[Bug 73227] Re: [feisty] some partitions do not appear in Places menu

2007-02-20 Thread Florent Mertens
** Description changed:

In feisty, volumes that are mounted from fstab with the options
defaults and/or auto are ignored and in consequence don't show up in
  place and in computer://

This is a different behavior from dapper or edgy, where all partitions,
mounted or not, where present in computer://. People were used to that
and it was IMO a good behavior.

I also don't see why we should ignore those volumes.
And if there is a reason, the rule is wrong cause a volume could be mounted
with or without the defaults option with no change for the user, but with a
different behavior in the desktop.

[Bug 66379] Re: evince does not enable print

2007-02-20 Thread Philippe Leroux
Roman: gtk 2.10.9 used to be in blastwave.org/testing
it has been removed i dont know why
you probably will have to compile it by hand
or wait for the package to make it to unstable
or better, go to blastwave bug track and submit a bug for gtk2 to ask for the
upgrade

now this was off topic in this thread so i invite you to join the
discution on blastwave bug track

for the other people here, is printing now working for you in evince and gtk
print backend? because i wish i could get back to this printing backend which
is much better, if it wasnt for that bug

[Bug 48655] Re: gthumb eats all memory when clicking on a ISO file

2007-02-20 Thread Timo Jyrinki
Yes. If I navigate with gthumb in feisty to a directory that only
contains eg. feisty-desktop-i386.iso (herd 4), a single icon
representing the .iso file is shown in gthumb, and at least when I click
once on the icon gthumb freezes while gthumb's mem usage raises to ca.
600MB - manageable with 1GB of memory and takes only 5-10 seconds, but
had I a bigger iso file or less memory I'd be in trouble. After the 5-10
seconds memory usage is back to normal.

You are right.

Yet its a much smaller group of users that even cares or changes the
screensaver. At least a freshly installed PC with an 'old' ati card or
matrox card won't randomly crash now. I know, the drivers are to blame,
but the drivers don't promise stable 3d support.

And well, I wouldn't know which logs to post that will help fix driver
issues. Perhaps someone can enlighten me? I still have the same bunch of
company pc's running dapper at some clients with old ati and matrox
cards. I fear I need to install some special debug version right? Maybe
I should just track down what is causing the crashes when opengl is
used..
