[Bug 103790] confirmed

2007-04-16 Thread iGadget
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 99498 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/99498

I also have this problem on 32bit Feisty. This bug seems to be a
duplicate of

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/hal/+bug/99498 and
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/102514

Can someone with the required privileges mark this one and the others?
Maybe we should keep the discussion 'central' in the confirmed one, bug #99498,
with the sidenote that having 2 or more partitions on the external drive
doesn't seem to be relevant.

[Bug 63090] Re: do not eject all USB/Firewire devices

2007-04-16 Thread Alex Murray
@Sander50: What workaround??

@pitti: In general I think it *doesn't* work fine to eject all usb
devices - especially external USB hard drives - flash drives seem to
work okay - except they can't be remounted afterwards and need to be
physically removed and reinserted first - but I have an external hard
drive which at the moment can't even be ejected - and the same is
occurring for anumber of other users - see bug #99498 - which is a
pretty bad regression as they can only me unmounted / ejected from the
command-line

So I agree - in general we should only eject those devices which NEED
ejection - ipods and the like - but those which can be happily unmounted
- usb flash and hard drives to name a few - should NOT require eject...

In fresh Feisty Fawn installation (daily build 11 Apr 2007) the default
dpi for gdm was much bigger then 75 or 96 (that's why fonts are too
big). The workaround which worked was to change [server-Standard]

[Bug 94048] Re: [feisty] Slow gnome application startup due to /etc/hosts misconfiguration

2007-04-16 Thread Jarmo Ilonen
JuliusBloch,

Doesn't look like network related (as could be guessed from /etc/hosts
not changing start up time). Gcalctool seems to be doing something weird
with the fonts, first 27000 lines of the strace log are mostly stuff
like

stat64(/usr/share/fonts/truetype/ttf-arabeyes/ae_AlYermook.ttf,
{st_mode=S_IFREG|0644, st_size=121972, ...}) = 0
open(/usr/share/fonts/truetype/ttf-arabeyes/ae_AlYermook.ttf, O_RDONLY) = 15
fcntl64(15, F_SETFD, FD_CLOEXEC) = 0
fstat64(15, {st_mode=S_IFREG|0644, st_size=121972, ...}) = 0
mmap2(NULL, 121972, PROT_READ, MAP_PRIVATE, 15, 0) = 0xb600f000
close(15) = 0
munmap(0xb600f000, 121972) = 0

So it opens a font file, mmaps it, then closes and munmaps, presumably
doing something with the font data in between. And it does that a lot.
Grepping for stat.*usr.*fonts gives 2823 hits, and the font stuff
takes most of the time in strace log. I straced galctool myself and the
same grep gave only 39 hits and starts in under one second. I have no
idea why it's doing that with the fonts in your case, maybe someone with
more knowledge of gnome font handling has some idea... It's a separate
bug to this /etc/hosts case anyway.

[Bug 63090] Re: do not eject all USB/Firewire devices

2007-04-16 Thread Alex Murray
But it seems like this (not being able to eject devices using nautilus /
drive-mount applet) is definitely a new problem - at least for me I
never had problems like this before, and thus this a regression for me -
has anything else changed such as the method used to eject the devices
which could account for it - ie. I can only eject the device from the
command line if I use sudo, but it cannot be ejected using nautilus or
the drive-mount applet or using eject as a normal user and thus this
problem would appear to be some sort of permissions problem...

[Bug 101895] Re: [apport] gnome-keyboard-properties crashed with SIGSEGV in draw_key() when trying to add new layout.

2007-04-16 Thread Paul Wagland
I actually have the Microsoft Natural Keyboard Pro USB / Microsoft
Internet Keyboard Pro, but I suspect that it is the non-square layout
that is causing the problem... Switching to generic did indeed solve the
problem.

This is with:
Package: gnome-control-center
Source: control-center
Version: 1:2.18.1-0ubuntu2

Re: [Bug 99620] Re: Breadcrumbs in Navigator won't navigate back via My Computer

2007-04-16 Thread Tim Mead
Hi there,

Yes, I can explain.

When you are looking through the file browser, up on the address bar (that
normally shows you where you are in the files structure), you see
something like /this_drive/this_folder/another_folder/current_folder.
Breadcrumbs are the iconic equivalent of the this text, to show you where
you have been to get to the current folder or path. The breadcrumbs are
(from memory) above the addressbar. So in summary, the Breadcrumbs are a
string of buttons named after the navigated directories hightlight where the
user has been.

In some operating systems (eg: Vista) you can see where you have been using
these Breadcrumbs, and go back by clicking on them (at any level). This is
very handy for navigating.

This feature is also in Ubuntu, *however*, when you navigate via the My
computer icon, the directory structure (rightly) changes, but the
navigation breadcrumbs do also.

To reproduce the problem:

Go to the main menu: -Places-Computer.
In the resulting file exploration window, click any multi-level heirarchy
file container. I'm going to use a CD Rom in my example.

Open CD-RW TEST-First Level-Second Level (for example)
Hit the arrow buttons at the beginning of the breadcrumbs chain of
icons...

Notice: you will see that you have two predecessors that weren't there
before: A drive icon, and media.

Navigating up and back to media is confusing, as the icons change, and the
Computer isn't navigable by the UP arrow, or the trail. However, the back
arrow still successfully navigates to Computer.

Expectations: To navigate via the Breadcrumb trail back through Computer,
and not to see /media/ there.

I appreciate this might not map to the physical mapping of the mounted
drive, but if so, the Computer paradigm doesn't map nicely.

Anyway, that's my suggestion / observation. I hope that it made sense!

Thanks for your time,

Tim Mead

[Bug 63090] Re: do not eject all USB/Firewire devices

2007-04-16 Thread J
I don't understand why this is delayed so long, 6 months is a pretty
long time imho, and this would be a usability enhancement, which would I
think ease the transision from other OSes for people. This just mixes
people up, can I or can I not remove my hdd, because they can't check in
syslog if the device was properly unmounted, so the pending write
operations terminated. Also, it was working for a while in feisty too,
but then this fdi rules file was added for some reason. It is very
strange that stuff that can't and doesn't need to be ejected is forced
to be ejected, why is this needed?

2007-04-16 Thread J
You should be able to mount the reader by mounting /dev/mmcblk0p1 , tell

complaining because the card reader doesn't get automatically mounted.
If I recall clearly, this is a regression, as in earlier feisty it did
mount.

[Bug 106992] mouse to rename causes crash on save-as

2007-04-16 Thread Kat Tanaka Okopnik
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gimp

When trying to 'save as' a new filename, something about the way I use
the mouse to delete part of the name gives either Ubuntu (edgy eft) or
gimp2.2 the impression that I want to grab the old filename and move it
off the dialog. This results in gimp crashing just as I'm trying to save
my work.

The problem seems to be that I'm highlighting the filename, but some
combination of mouseclick and mousedrag results in move the filename
off rather than highlight the parts indicated.

I have the .crash file (10.3MB) saved, but I do not know if this
interface will let me attach it.

[Bug 50524] Moving file into home folder (launcher) created from places doesn't work

2007-04-16 Thread -JojoMan-
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Instructions to Reproduce:
1. from the Places Menu drag your home folder to the desktop. this creates a
usable icon which you can open and close (works fine).
2. Try do drag a text file or jpg file into the icon with the intention to copy
the files to your home folder.
3.Watch it not work

I've included a screenshot of the launcher properties and error, perhaps
it's useful.

I'm using latest dapper version w/ updates

Note: the original reporter indicated the bug was in package 'gnome-
desktop'; however, that package was not published in Ubuntu.

** Affects: nautilus (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: Confirmed
