[Bug 49594] Re: Users can't login after session crash

2007-07-12 Thread Jim Bailey
Feisty 7.04

Sorry just quick notes

I am experiencing a similar problem after a power outage of my desktop.
I can not use fail safe also user created with the gnome user creation
tool work and lots of other stuff can not mess about too long as I have
deadlines from hell backing up and going for a reinstall.

Just want to add a desktop that can not survive random reboots and power
cycles of life hasn't really got a place in the office eco-system. IMHO
Gnome devs need to address this issue with some urgency.

[Bug 125536] Re: Internal error when sending mail without attachment

This only happens whtn the 'remind missing attachments' option is
checked in composer preferences and one of the keywords is in the
e-mail. One of those keywords was in my (corporate boilerplate)
signature, and hence it was being triggered on all e-mails.

[Bug 125536] Internal error when sending mail

2007-07-12 Thread Paul Wagland
Public bug reported:

When trying to send an e-mail, I get a dialog box popup with the
following message:

Internal error, unknown error
'org.gnome.evolution.plugins.attachment_reminder:attachment-reminder'

This does have 'do not show this again' option, but no yes/no/OK/cancel
buttons. If I send an e-mail with an attachment, it works fine, and the
e-mail is sent.

[Bug 123819] Re: panel problem with dual head on feisty latest

2007-07-12 Thread BullCreek
All three stored values (Name, Command, Comment) seem to be improperly
handled. I changed them as follows in order:

Display :0.0
Name: Firefox Left
Command: firefox -P left %u
Comment: Browse the World Wide Web Left

Display :0.1
Name: Firefox Right
Command: firefox -P default %u
Comment: Browse the World Wide Web Right

Then, I logged out and logged back in - and the last values for Display
:0.1 had overwritten all three values for Display :0.0, i.e. Display
:0.0 is now as follows:

Name: Firefox Right
Command: firefox -P default %u
Comment: Browse the World Wide Web Right

Hope this helps! Let me know if I can do anything else to test.

[Bug 125546] python API for keyring should be smarter and allow more fine grained access control

2007-07-12 Thread Alexander Sack
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Currently, if a python application asks for access to the keyring, the
user cannot grant access in a fine grained (per python application)
fashion - e.g. the user is asked to allow access for python and not the
script/application name.

The idea is to make the python keyring binding smarter to look at the
actual script executed.

[Bug 125555] Assign $KEY_VIDEOOUT (0xaa) to run xrandr --auto

2007-07-12 Thread Scott James Remnant
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: metacity

On laptops which generate a scan code when Fn+F8 is pressed, they will
generate the $KEY_VIDEOOUT key code which will be 0xaa.

On laptops which generate some other kind of event, we will fake a key
press for 0xaa

So please hook the 0xaa key in the window manager to run xrandr --auto

This will activate any connected displays, with appropriate sizes and
arrangement, etc.

This is still a live issue. The active bug appears to be #26338:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-system-tools/+bug/26338.
Note, like many related bugs, the first posts are about some device not working
(because of hal). The underlying problem, like here, is that users-admin is
clobbering /etc/group. I'm going to mark this as a duplicate of #26338.

This was marked as a duplicate of #49815, which is it.
I'm changing both to duplicates of #26338, where there is more active
discussion.
Admittedly, this bug gives a clearer statement of the problem, though the
problem is broader: adding *any* user seems to strip *lots* of group info from
/etc/group. See you at #26338.

[Bug 26338] Re: Adding a user to a group modifies other users' groups and passwords

2007-07-12 Thread Charles Twardy
=== Summary ===
I've just reviewed the duplicates, and marked a few others as duplicates. The
problem seems to be that the graphical users-admin tool has some SEVERE bugs
that make a system unusable and insecure. It makes several unintended changes
to /etc/group under various conditions, including:
  * stripping group membership from all/many accounts when adding a new user
  * allowing non-admin accounts to change the root password
  * deleting accounts other than the selected one (?)
Bug #64698 has a good statement of one manifestation.

Symptoms include:
  * User no longer in sudoers (because no longer in admin)
  * Network failures (because haldaemon is no longer in appropriate groups)
  * Sound failures (because user and haldaemon are no longer in audio)
  * USB and other devices no longer working (haldaemon again)
  * Gnome login problems (audio? hal? networking?)

Very likely this bug is causing a whole host of mysterious bugs that
never got tracked back to /etc/group, because the symptoms are
apparently unrelated.

One method to recover:
  * Reboot to recovery mode (a.k.a. single-user)
  * Edit /etc/group:
 * add the appropriate accounts to admin and audio (etc) again
 * add haldaemon to: cdrom, floppy, audio, plugdev, powerdev (maybe
others, but that's what I found)

I am attaching my reconstructed /etc/group, to help people recover. I
_appear_ to have everything working again (sound, network, gnome login,
sudo) though I may yet have missed something, or your system may have
other bits. It's been slightly anonymized -- users daffy, bugs,
marvin and donald are fictitious. Hope this helps.

Other possibilities including reinstalling hal and/or udev to reset
those permissions. (sudo aptitude reinstall hal hal-device-manger).

Mind you, I'm deleting users-admin from my system for now.

Re: [Bug 26338] Re: Adding a user to a group modifies other users' groups and passwords

2007-07-12 Thread David Green
Charles,

Thanks for the updates. It's been at least 8 months since I looked at this
but I guess it is still not fixed. I had to drop Ubuntu since this bug
meant it failed (miserably) my company's security criteria.

thanks again,

David

[Bug 113536] Re: gnome-keyring-manager locked at boot

2007-07-12 Thread Pablo
MORE INFORMATION:
I have to say that my gnome-keyring-password is the same than my user password.

NOTES:

I think this bug should not have low importance assigned, because it
also causes F-Spot to crash when I try to upload photos to a Google Web
album (pressing on Deny causes F-Spot to crash)

In my opinion, this is an important bug because it's a very important
application that belongs to the GNOME base system, and it's widely used
by other applications.

[Bug 125626] Missing advanced tab in most printing dialogs

2007-07-12 Thread felix.rommel
Public bug reported:

Description:

In most Gnome applications, the Advanced tab is missing. In Gimp it's
there!

How to reproduce:

1. Open for example gedit
2. Open print dialog

Expected behavior:

Advanced tab should be available in ALL Gnome applications! This is
important because people often want to print a web map, text or sth.
like that only in Draft grayscale and NOT in color mode - It's not
user friendly if you have to go do

System Settings Printer Edit Printer Settings Set printout mode

I do not think that it's too much for new users having one more
ESSENTIAL tab in printing dialog. So please ADD the Advanced tab as
shown in attached screenshot of Gimp print dialog! Thanks!

[Bug 78809] Randomly crashing (SIGSEGV/SIGPIPE)

2007-07-12 Thread Rebecca Palmer
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Binary package hint: firefox

I recently installed Ubuntu 6.10 in place of Debian 3.1 in the hope of
ending its frequent crashes (see Debian bug http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-
bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=393650), but Firefox is still randomly closing or
hanging; sometimes, but not always, it then crashes again on attempting
to restart it.

I copied my bookmarks and cookies, but nothing else, from my old Firefox
profile, and have no extensions beyond the default Ubuntu Firefox.
JavaScript and Java are off. Connection is via college network.

The crash typically occurs once every few hours, with no pattern yet
found of what triggers it, and the traces can point to a lot of
different places; apart from the one included, I've had jsInterp.c (no
details because it took the gdb terminal down with it before the whole
trace appeared), SIGSEGV at 0xb4988dcb in ?? () from
/usr/lib/firefox/components/libhtmlpars.so, SIGPIPE in a
__kernel_vsyscall () - send () - 0xb7e62a03 in pt_Send (parameters
removed by me as I was on a secure site at the time) at ptio.c:1902, and
SIGSEGV at (no address) InsertPropertyTreeChild (removed) at
jsscope.c:580. Because of this wide variation I do not know if this is
related to the existing Firefox random crashers #24728 and #48772.

It is possible that the cause is outside Firefox (I run a commercial
on-access antivirus which doesn't officially support Ubuntu
(http://www.sophos.com/support/knowledgebase/article/4377.html) and keep
getting couldn't create backup warnings when saving files in gedit; I am
awaiting a response from them as to whether this could be the problem). Memory
test (Debian memtest86+) was OK but could it be some other hardware problem?

The crash traced below happened while viewing
http://www.fortunecity.com/business/director/1255/31xxxtech.html as the
only tab in that window; a second window with 3 tabs also went down.
Firefox then restarted normally but Bug Buddy then reported a crash in
CD/DVD Creator (which wasn't open) as
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=395406

Program received signal SIGSEGV, Segmentation fault.

I understand there is a sleep workaround, but what if I want to be
sure one of my applications starts before all other ones?

[Bug 43322] Re: EOG crashes when stopping slideshow

I had the impression it would be difficult to fish out just the patch,
since upstream preferred to rewrite the core... But please do something,
because it's a shame for Feisty :)

[Bug 115100] Re: Terminal displays as a blank window

2007-07-12 Thread Chris Cotsapas
I've found this too, on 7.04 (upgraded from Edgy, upgraded from Dapper),
using beryl. Minimizing the terminal window and unminimizing solves it
though.

[Bug 125666] lowercase 'e' won't type into terminal at all

2007-07-12 Thread hdshngout
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-terminal

In Feisty Fawn I started the terminal as normal and the lowercase 'e'
wouldn't enter. What's strange is it will type outside the terminal and
even the capital 'E' will work in the terminal.

I have tried restarting the computer, switching keyboards and almost
anything else you can think of and nothing has worked.

[Bug 125653] Re: unable to start evolution as user

2007-07-12 Thread hggdh
Thank you. Unfortunately, the backtrace is unusable -- it does not show
the functions.

Please follow the instructions steps 1 and 2 at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProgramCrash. Then run

sudo apt-get install evolution-dbgsym evolution-data-server-dbgsym

(what I can get from the backtrace suggests the problem is related to
libevolution-calendar).

Then rerun gdb. When you get hit by the error, issue:

thread apply all bt

This gdb command will backtrace all threads. Then attach the gdb output
here.

Please bear in mind that the above debugging packages are the minimum
minimorum necessary for us to make some sense of the backtrace; we main
need more dgbsym packages.

[Bug 115100] Re: Terminal displays as a blank window

2007-07-12 Thread Micah Cowan
If this is only a broblem for people using beryl or compiz, it seems
very likely the fault lies with those, rather than gnome-terminal.
