It is also very likely that this was related to compiz. Check gnome- session-properties, which program currently tries to attach to the session. For me, compiz often failed to connect and then timed out after 60 seconds. I have installed Kubuntu with all four 'needed' packages ooo-gnome, ooo-gtk, ooo-kde and mozilla-ooo and soffice only starts if i downgrade to the previous libgtk2.0.0-2.10.x. Editing /etc/hosts solved my problem. 127.0.1.1 was xxx.brycewhite.com (which wasnt resolving) By changing this line the slow down of application launching was immediately resolved.
