[Bug 132612] memory leak in evince?
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: evince I'm running Gutsy, all up to date, and finding evince very slow and erratic with large (100s of pages, 30-50MB) PDF files. Machine triple-boots Feisty/Gutsy/WinXP; HP Pavilion with 512 MB RAM, Athlon 64 3200+ single processor. In Feisty evince loads large PDFs fine, changes pages smoothly. System Monitor shows evince process uses 50-100MB with a 50MB file open and static; this bounces up by another 2 to 50 MB when I change to a new page, but then drops back to the same level as before. In Gutsy (2.6.22-9-generic kernel) same file loads more slowly, system freezes for ages before recovering. System Monitor shows evince using 250 or more MB when the 50MB file is open and static, bouncing up to 350-400 MB when I change to another page. Then the memory usage stay high (~100%) for much longer, probably until some is paged out to swap. The effect is that the system has no (or very little) free user memory most of the time, which makes it very hard to use .. Acrobat reader in WinXP behaves much more like Feisty/evince, though the % memory used rises slowly as more pages are added to the looked at stack. It never jumps to anywhere near 100%. Both Ubuntu installs use the same swap partition, 1.4 GB; both actually use it, according to System Monitor. ** Affects: evince (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- memory leak in evince? https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/132612 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug contact for evince in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 67307] Re: EDGY RC, USB storage devices no longer mounted
This bug is still around in Feisty (and the Tribe 4 Gutsy I tried). Local machine users mount USB storage device sticks fine, LDAP users do not. Sometimes the device will appear under computer:/// not mounted and give a permissions error when double clicking, other times will not. dmesg | grep usb : [ 4330.314577] usb-storage: device found at 103 [ 4330.314581] usb-storage: waiting for device to settle before scanning [ 4335.309419] usb-storage: device scan complete Any work around for this? I have an entire primary school on feisty without USB stick support atm - Fedora 7 doesn't have this problem. [Bug 132417] Re: evince doesn't display the correct font
After trying to find an excellent example, i'll have to amend my bugreport a tiny bit. It is not about ArialMT but about non-embedded: PalatinoLinotype-Roman It's about document http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vi3_301_201_admin_guide.pdf The 'normal' text on for instance book page 7, is in acrobat reader a serif typeface, in evince it is a 'sans-serif'. When i turn on FC_DEBUG=4 and 'printCommands yes' i learn the following: Add Subst match pattern any family Equal Palatino-Roman edit Edit family Append URWPalladioL-Roma; (indeed: fc-match Palatino-Roman gives: URWPalladioL-Roma.pfb: URW Palladio L Roman, which is in gfonts-x11) I am not a master in interpreting fontconfig / poppler debug output, but i will try to find the relevant spot: If poppler encounters the lines: Tf /TT8 1 font: tag=TT8 name='PalatinoLinotype-Roman' 1 Tm 10.98 0 0 10.98 153 640.02 Tc 0.0008 Tw -0.0049 Tj (Customizing Guest Op) It starts finding a proper font match. FcConfigSubstitute Pattern has 6 elts (size 16) family: Palatino Linotype(s) slant: 0(i)(s) weight: 80(i)(s) width: 100(i)(s) spacing: 0(i)(s) lang: xx(s) ... (it passes the opportunity to match a close relative:) FcConfigSubstitute test pattern any family Equal Palatino-Roman No match ... (and concludes with:) Substitute match pattern all family NotEqual sans-serif pattern all family NotEqual serif pattern all family NotEqual monospace edit Edit family AppendLast sans-serif; Does this help you any further? Public bug reported: --== Do not use this bug report to discuss which games are best ==-- Ubuntu strives to include 'best of category' GNU software, but in the games menu it only represents one or two types of game. I think it should include a 'best of' for each different genre of computer game. I know there are many excellent games out there from different genre which are GNU licensed and would be great in Ubuntu. The current selection seems like an extension of MS's set of bundled games. The wikipedia article lists these main genre: 1.1 Action games 1.2 Adventure 1.3 Fighting 1.4 Role-playing games 1.5 Platform games 1.6 Simulation games 1.7 Sports 1.8 Strategy Using that list I can only see strategy represented in Ubuntu. [Bug 77138] Re: gtkdoc-fixxref broken by compressed documentation
The complexity of every simple private or one-shot script that reads these files is considerably increased. This is why we use wrappers, libraries, or whatever to handle input formats, instead of writing a parser for each program. Many of these files are not in `formats'. They are general text files: structured, unstructured, and often ad-hoc or partially structured. No wrapper will do unless it's a fopen() (leaving aside open(), mmap(), etc.) wrapper. The trivial zgrep wrapper shows this isn't an issue; No, the necessity to learn different commands (if someone wrote them) because none of the standard Unix text tools is usable (on supposedly text files) shows that it is a serious issue. besides, why would one want to grep instead of using beagle, tracker, or an ad hoc command to access a specialized format? Beagle is not useful for searching because it is incapable of imposing conditions on the file name. And of course it does not replace any other text tool beside grep. Regarding specialized formats, if you have ever tried to find anything in gnuplot help, you probably noticed the fastest method is to just grep the gih file. I don't understand what's good on complicating of reading the files. This does not depend on how specialized the format is. Why HTML files aren't compressed? So, why they aren't? Why are most PNG files compressed? Ah, now we are getting somewhere. PNG files are not compressed. Show me a single png.gz file. And please don't try to argue PNG files are compressed internally, because this is completely irrelevant. PNG specifications says how the information is stored, it can be compressed, or frobnicated or whatever. But PNG files are stored exactly according to their specification, no mangling is performed. Unlike other files that are mangled. evince certainly does, as well as compressed DVI and PS. evince /usr/share/doc/tetex-doc/programs/dvips.pdf.gz Result: http://hydra.physics.muni.cz/~yeti/tmp/evince-pdf-gz.png The same for DVI (it can handle ps.gz though). - This discussion is pointless. After all the years of experience with compressed documentation in Debian no one can convince me it makes sense. And conversely, Debian people seem to be incapable of admitting any fundamental problems. Will I ever grow wise enough to let it be? Sigh. - my conclusion so far is that we should aim at excluding index.sgml files from compression and that such a transition will happen slowly over the next years. Re: [Bug 96676] Re: [feisty] function keys don't work in gnome-terminal
On Tue, 14 Aug 2007, Izzy wrote: I just found out that the problem does *NOT* appear with konsole. That's not unexpected, given the history of the feature. I implemented the original flavor in (xterm of course) Patch #94 - 1999/3/27 - XFree86 3.9Pf and made the change which seems to be the root of this discussion in Patch #167 - 2002/8/24 - XFree86 4.2.0 and documented/extended the permutations in Patch #216 - 2006/8/3 Patch #223 - 2006/11/30 iirc, konsole is using the original flavor, while as noted, gnome-terminal attempts to use the terminfo entry but reportedly is not associating things in the same way that I setup for xterm. Aside from unintentionally changing the default for the behavior that corresponds to the modifyCursorKeys resource as noted for #223, I don't _recall_ having changed anything in the terminfo which would be incompatible - for xterm itself. gnome-terminal, of course, is expected to work either way since it reads the terminal description. Checking a bit deeper, it uses TERM=linux - setting TERM=xterm here breaks a few things again. The other way round (setting TERM=linux in a xterm session) is not helpful at all. Side-effect of TERM=linux is that you lose mouse support (at least as far as Midnight Commander is affected). So you have the choice of mouse XOR keyboard working fine. Midnight Commander is probably linked with s-lang, which only looks for xterm in $TERM to decide if the terminal supports mouse. ncurses looks at the kmous capability (which is more reliable). btw - the extra key-bindings for alt/shift/control modifiers in the terminfo descriptions are invisible to s-lang, since it has its own terminfo reader... (not really noticeable for Midnight Commander if you're using the learn-keys feature). @Thomas Dickey: If you could send me the affected termcap files (and say where they belong to), I would try to replace mine (after a backup). If that solves the issue, we at least know how to work around the bug until it's solved (which I guess will not happen that soon - to be honest, I would even be surprised if it was solved in Gutsy). I'm puzzled by the original description, which states that infocmp is showing \EO rather than \E[ for the control sequence initiator, but am guessing that Ubuntu is still assigning xterm to the 5-year-old version of xterm. (While xterm can be configured to match this, that was changed for a good reason, and it would be nice if we didn't have to deal with antique bugs). The way to construct a _terminfo_ entry (I thought Ubuntu is a repackager of Debian...), is to make a text file such as xterm|customized entry, use=xterm-xf86-v44, and compile that with tic (noting that if you're not root, then it may go to $HOME/.terminfo - a bad feature which was depcrecated long ago). [Bug 132678] printing in landscape mode clips to portrait
Public bug reported: I cannot print in landscape from any gnome apps. I can get the orientation and placement of the printout right but the text is then clipped to portrait width, leaving the right side of the landscape paper blank. 1. Open a wide spreadsheet in gnumeric for example. 2. Set landscape and rotate 90 degrees in the page setup dialog. Preview displays the page correctly. 3. Select print and select landscape again there as well. Preview still displays the page correctly. 4. Click print (either to a printer or to a pdf file). The result is that the text is clipped to a portrait format, even though the orientation and location on the page is right. I'm using libgnomeprint2.2 2.18.0-0ubuntu1 under Feisty. It was annoying enough under Ubuntu Dapper, where I had to check both landscape and rotate 90 degrees in the page setup dialog, and landscape in the print dialog, or it would not print correctly. That was probably related to some of the other bugs reported here, #24785 for example. But at least there _was_ a way to print in landscape. [Bug 114822] Re: Gnome Volume Manager mistakes Hard Disk Partitions for Removable media
Actually, I am not sure this is a bug in gnome-volume-manager, but a consequence of the distribution policy regarding package “hal”, and more exactly the file /usr/share/hal/fdi/policy/10osvendor/20-storage-methods.fdi. As per the lines 111 to 124 of that file, fixed partitions included in fstab, not already mounted, and with “noauto” among the mount options, are flagged as volume.ignore = false. gnome-volume-manager then mounts them. One way to avoid it would be to include in the file /etc/hal/fdi/policy/preferences.fdi (location recommended by the hal documentation, see http://people.freedesktop.org/~david/hal-spec/hal-spec.html#fdi-search-paths) a section as the following one: device match key=linux.fstab.mountpoint exists=true match key=linux.fstab.options contains=noauto merge key=volume.ignore type=booltrue/merge /match /match /device (There are surely plenty of other “match key” combinations to get the same results). Gently was referring to when he mentioned blacklist. -- Gnome Volume Manager mistakes Hard Disk Partitions for Removable media https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/114822 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug contact for gnome-volume-manager in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 77138] Re: gtkdoc-fixxref broken by compressed documentation
No, the necessity to learn different commands (if someone wrote them) because none of the standard Unix text tools is usable (on supposedly text files) shows that it is a serious issue.[...] Beagle is not useful for searching[...] I don't understand what's good on complicating of reading the files.[...] And please don't try to argue PNG files are compressed internally[...] This is twisting the issue to your liking and ignoring the arguments I'm giving: the fact is unix commands are meant to be combined, and *no* you can't expect grep -r to search in all possible formats, even formats transporting text such as PDF or MSWord; heck, you can't even grep on HTML files for anything else than small ASCII words. Stop thinking that the only constraint on the files of a system is to be able to grep -r them. I explained why the space savings are an advantage in some cases and that we try to adapt the tools to handle these. By your logic, we wouldn't use tar files because they hide individual files from standard commands such as cp and wget. The reason I mentionned Beagle or PNG is that we are not living in a text file world; even index.sgml files aren't plain text: they are SGML; try searching for Loïc when it's spelled as Lo#239; or whatever. We're living in a format in format in format world (make that recursive). Why HTML files aren't compressed? So, why they aren't? I see you insist on getting an answer as if I didn't reply already: some HTML files are compressed as dpkg -S html.gz will show you; there's no need to compress in the http:// case, this is why you don't see them compressed on the web; I already answered that http was already zipping the contents. evince /usr/share/doc/tetex-doc/programs/dvips.pdf.gz I'm sorry it doesn't work for you under Ubuntu; Debian fixed the list of MIME types listed in the evince.desktop files, and it works fine under Debian. I'm sure this will reach Ubuntu soon. After all the years of experience with compressed documentation in Debian no one can convince me it makes sense. And conversely, Debian people seem to be incapable of admitting any fundamental problems. This is because you don't wont to read the actual arguments people are making: saving space is still an issue for example in live CDs, embedded systems (where one still has to ship some files such as copyrights), or simply to email them; zipping still provides a speed advantage when the CPU is mostly idle while the disk is a bottleneck. I already wrote this, but you simply ignore the existence of the advantages. Now, as I already said, I can live with the fact that the inventors of gtk-doc index.sgml files do not want to impose to tools the support of zipped files, and we can diverge from the default of zipping everything to explicitly exclude these files (even if I think it's not the best solution in the interest of Debian and our users), but please do not argue that Debian can not convince it makes sense or that Debian is incapable of admitting any fundamental problem. I think I proved above that there are valid use cases for compression, it's omnipresent (in protocols, file types, or in file systems as you noted), and that I'm willing to try to avoid compressing gtk-doc index.sgml files if it's the desire of gtk-doc upstream. (This is especially true since issues with index.sgml.gz files were never reported to Debian.) -- gtkdoc-fixxref broken by compressed documentation https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/77138 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug contact for gtk-doc in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 118745] Re: Font sizes in Gutsy are vulnerable to bad X.org DPI detection
Pardon my curiosity, but what is the significance of the OS knowing the PPI of the screen? Consider the following scenarios: Screen #1 is an independent monitor: a 19 LCD with native 1280x1024 resolution. The PPI is approx. 85. The user sits between 3 and 5 feet away from this screen. Screen #2 is a laptop panel: a 14.1 LCD with native 1280x800 resolution. The PPI is approx. 105. The user sits between 1 and 2 feet away from this screen. When the GUI scales everything by the DPI of the monitor, it will scale everything according to what the real size of the graphics should be. This means that Screen #1 will display more information on it than Screen #2, regardless of resolution. However, the smaller size of the graphics on Screen #1 causes the user to strain at his usual sitting distance from the monitor, while the relatively large graphics on Screen #2 suffocate him with their sheer size. I guess what I'm asking is, wouldn't it make more sense to have a GUI scaling tool that lets you resize all graphics (independent of resolution) rather than autosize everything according to the monitor's PPI? -- Font sizes in Gutsy are vulnerable to bad X.org DPI detection https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/118745 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 118745] Re: Font sizes in Gutsy are vulnerable to bad X.org DPI detection
(Correct me if I'm wrong here, but... this is why to the best of my understanding.) The reason for knowing the DPI hasn't been too important in the past, but could grow to become a bigger issue in the future. This is because although most current screens are approximately 96 DPI, there is room for improvement in the future in making denser screens for better detail. My 20 monitor has a resolution of 1680x1050; but what if someone has a 20 monitor that is 3360x2100? Everything would appear to be unusably small on this monitor, despite them being the same size. Using DPI properly and sizing based on actual distances, as opposed to via pixels, means that sizes would be standardized. What is an inch on my monitor would also be an inch on the other, just the other would look that much more detailed. This can be important in other ways too: ever try holding up a sheet of paper to your word document? If it doesn't line up quite right at 100% zoom your DPI setting is probably slightly off. As the DPI on monitors increases, this will become a bigger issue. In your example, the graphics on both screens would be the same size. The menu bar on each would be .25 on both, or what have you. The problem you seem to take with proper DPI settings seems to be caused by your viewing distance from the screen; an issue which DPI isn't meant to correct for.
A possible solution to the bad DPI detection could be to have a simple way of allowing users to input it on install. This could be done by showing a ruler on the screen and asking users to expand/compress it until it matches up with the markings on a real ruler. (Windows has a similar method, and it works pretty well.) This would be pretty simple for users to understand, and would give an easy failsafe in case the DPI is incorrectly detected. -- Font sizes in Gutsy are vulnerable to bad X.org DPI detection https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/118745 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 115652] Re: libgnome slows down desktop trying to open esd
This esd not found will now happen exactly once, but the desktop is not slowed down any more. When esd or pulseaudio-esd-compat is installed, it shuold still be used, so we need to check once at program start. ** Changed in: libgnome (Ubuntu) Status: In Progress = Fix Released -- libgnome slows down desktop trying to open esd https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/115652 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug contact for libgnome in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 75801] Feisty: Crash when browsing menus with menu editor
You have been subscribed to a public bug: What happened: * I added a menu item with the menu editor in the submenu Internet * I did not appear in the panel menu, nor in the menu editor (this happens often, I have to restart gnome to see the new item) * the menu editor was still opened, i clic on the Graphics submenu to add another item there, then it crashed. A python 2.4 bug report was generated (4.2 Mb), should I attach it (I guess it helps) ?
