[Bug 150966] Re: openoffice will not load

2007-10-10 Thread Waldo22
I am using ubuntu-packages. In the Community Forums, someone suggested
that they could launch OOo from the terminal. I tried that with no
success. It mentioned a fork error. I am too new to know what that
means; sorry. It appears, from what I am reading elsewhere, that there
is a conflict with the fglrx driver and the OOo ubuntu-packages. If the
driver is disabled, OOo will work flawlessly. Upon reinstalling the
driver, OOo will not load. I am now using the generic video driver, not
the fglrx driver. If I understand correctly, the problem is well known
by now; I just didn't know that in my original post.

Of course! I have read the bug #122602, and I use the absolutely latest
xdg-user-dirs under daily live builds (as I've said earlier):

xdg-user-dirs-0.9-0ubuntu1

But I think the new bug has been introduced in xdg-user-

Forgot to mention, that the bug is still reproducable with the latest
(for the moment) 20071009.1 daily live ISO. To reproduce, it's enough
to:

* Load from a daily liveCD with an international language (like Russian or
French)
* On a fully updated gutsy system, create a new user and change the language in
GDM before loggin in (this way, folders are created with the right locale).

I do not have a bottom panel as the compiz tools make it pretty
unnecessary. However, I've noticed that my top panel does not load until
I click the desktop. It's not a big deal but not ideal behavior. I don't
know if it's a compiz issue or a gnome panel issue. since compiz now
loads my default on login and I haven't tried to turn it off. In any
case, I see my top panel briefly before the desktop wallpaper loads but
it vanishes and then I see the desktop. As soon as I click on the
desktop the top panel appears.

[Bug 148291] Re: Unable to start the settings manager 'gnome-settings-daemon'.

2007-10-10 Thread n3m3sis
I too have experienced this problem after the last update (tonights, 40
packages including 2.6.22.14 kernel headers etc..)

There was an error starting the GNOME Settings Daemon

Some things, such as themes, sounds, or background settings may not work
correctly.

The last error message was:

Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did
not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply
timeout expired, or the network connection was broken.
There was an error starting the GNOME Settings Daemon

GNOME will still try to restart the Settings Daemon next time you log in.

Mine happened after changing the audio conferencing sound capture device from
alsa to Nvidia 2. My desktop froze and and then the 3d desktop disappeared
along with the transparency. I wen to the appearance section and found that the
visual effects setting had been reset to none. I re-enabled custom effects and
my 3d desktop came back with all the trimmings but I rebooted anyway just to
be sure everything was back to normal, thats when I got the above message
(on login to ubuntu root desktop). All seems to be okay except the text on all
tool bars has become very small and also some of the icons have changed, such
as the one to shut down/logout the user which is now a green man on the run as
opposed to the usual power button icon. Also I'm getting that box come up if I
try to enter the sound setting box or any item on the preferences menu although
they selected item does appear after clicking ok on the error box

Re: [Bug 150103] Re: Apparent corruption after ripping Sony/EMI copy controlled CD

2007-10-10 Thread Kent Fuller
Hello Kees,

Thank you for your prompt response. I had previously tried to rip a
couple of tracks from that CD on a Windows XP machine and found that it
attempted to load DRM software, with or without consent. This behaviour
is tantamount to virus behaviour in my opinion. Yes, piracy is a problem
but I own the original disk.

I suspected that there may be other hidden files capable of corrupting
Feisty. As a newbie user I thought it best to raise the matter as I find
now that Sound Juicer will not rip any .cda files at all from any CD I
own, despite twice removing and reinstalling the complete program. So
something is corrupted. However, I have since loaded a couple of other
Ubuntu rippers which seem to behave as expected, so the problem is
probably with Sound Juicer. I will log a bug to that effect on the
author's website.

Thanks again,

[Bug 149942] Re: Keyboard shortcuts in workspace switcher do not work

2007-10-10 Thread M
Just upgraded to new version that came out either yesterday or today;
problem seems to be fixed. Other problems exist, however, such as the
workspace switcher being unresponsive to changes in number of
workspaces.

RIght now I have four workspaces in one row in the switcher, but
physically there are 2 rows, 2 columns (CTRL-ALT-arrow shifts once
horizontally and once vertically). Changing the number of rows and
columns in the switcher has no effect on the display but does change the
physical number of workspaces as demonstrated by CTRL-ALT-arrow
switching.

I tried again a minute ago after doing full update and rebooting but the

shows it again OR right clicking the desktop.

[Bug 151207] Error when trying to open a .wmf file, should use Gimp

2007-10-10 Thread François Tissandier
Public bug reported:

When trying to open a .wmf file, there is no open with option, and the
open option leads to an error message. Gimp is not able to edit this
format, but at least to read it. Nautilus is also creating a thumb for
the file, so it's a bit frustrating not to be able to open it. Open
should run Gimp in my opinion. Or it should maybe appear in the open

[Bug 150906] Re: [gutsy] VERY bad Desktop location inconsistency with xdg-user dirs

2007-10-10 Thread Артём Попов
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 122602 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/122602

Hi! Of course, I have read all the comments for bug #122602. Sorry, If I
am being unclear, but english is not my native language, and my comments
may seem ambiguous.

I'll try to be more clear: Despite Desktop not being bookmarked in the
latest xdg-user-dirs(-gtk) packages, another folder named Desktop
(translated on disk to Рабочий стол, Bureau) is being created, which
is very confusing, because:

In all revelant places (Places menu, GTK file choosers, etc.), users
have TWO Desktop-shortcuts:

1. One points to the physical Desktop folder
2. The other points to the physical Рабочий стол folder (Desktop translation)

I beleive this happens due to unification of DESKTOP and DOWNLOAD dirs
in 0.8-0ubuntu3. xdg-user-dirs-gtk creates a bookmark for DOWNLOAD, and
DOWNLOAD points to DESKTOP in our package. But the folder created has
translated name, ignoring the already-present special-cased Desktop
folder. So, in recent daily livecds I always see 2 folders in my $HOME:
Desktop and Рабочий стол

See?

Please take your time to look at the screenshots attached to this bug.
They illustrate this all quite well.

I beleive there're two ways to fix this:

1. Remove translations for Desktop and desktop from all the .po-
files for xdg-user-dirs, so that exactly one special-cased Desktop
folder will remain.

2. Split DESKTOP and DOWNLOAD in /etc/xdg/user-dirs.defaults again, so
the false Desktop folder will not at least be created by default.

I beleive GNOME does not yet respect xdg-user-dirs, and is hardly tied
to the special-cased untranslated Desktop directory, so it might be
useful to remove desktop and Desktop translation strings from the
template until Hardy and GNOME 2.22...

Hmm, it gets created in new gutsy installs and the live environment, and
it seems, that exactly the non-translated Desktop is used everywhere
throughout GNOME (only menu/fileselector shortcut is localized, the
folder is not), and the translated Desktop is bogus.

I think this is a rather significant bug, which should either be
reopened or a new bug must be created for tracking the issue.

The laptop's built in screen is disabled via xorg.conf and is not used.

[Bug 38848] Re: beeps on tab

I agree: no beep is the best.

When user presses tab, there is nothing to beep about. Users attention
is already on screen. There is no danger at sight. Long operation has
not just ended. And there is no point in (beep) telling (beep) the (beep
beep) whole office (beep) that user is (beep) using (beep) bash as
normal. (beep)

Thank beforehand to whoever fixes this.

[Bug 55228] Re: Serpentine does not autoset disc capacity, no warning

2007-10-10 Thread seanh
A further issue with this is that Serpentine makes you choose the disc
capacity in minutes, which makes sense for an audio CD burner, except
that not all blank CDs state their capacity in minutes. Do you know how
many minutes a CD gets per MB by heart? I don't. Perhaps it could
present the options in this format: 80 minutes (700MB).

Any progress on this? Would be nice to get it fixed. Serpentine is a
pretty sweet default audio burner if not for this issue.

[Bug 123078] Re: System - Quit takes a long time to appear

2007-10-10 Thread Timo Jyrinki
Setting to Confirmed. Indeed if I remove (like I did) gnome-power-
manager from the autostart list (System-Preferences-Sessions), gnome-
session-save --kill or clicking the Quit icon or selecting System-Quit
results in ca. 60s wait. If I cancel it, the next time it works as
normal. If I logout and login again, the 60s wait is there again.

Relieved to having found what was the cause of the problem, though... it
was really annoying.

Strange, before the last compiz updates (before the last updates prior

would appear. Now (after the last compiz update prior to 10 Oct 07)
when I first boot and log in, both panels are invisible, and the
clicking no longer works. I actually have to switch to the next

[Bug 151253] Lock screen causes X to crash

2007-10-10 Thread Luc Stroobant
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-screensaver

Well, it's all in the subject. When I hit lock screen or my
screensaver activates and wants to lock the screen, X crashes and after
a few seconds I get a new gdm login prompt.

This is on an HP Compaq nc6320 in a docking station with an external HP1740 17
screen. I guess the issue might be related to the dual-screen setup.
VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS, 943/940GML
Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03)

I don't think I'm the only one with this problem, check
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=60671 , but I couldn't find an
existing bug report for the issue.
