Well, seems like I 'solved' the problem by deleting the entire top panel
and re-creating it from scratch. After logging out and back in again,
the notification area worked as normal again. Of course, this is just a

I installed 8.04 from the CD, did all the updates, then tried to install
libgtkmm-2.4-dev.
I now re-installed 8.04, did NOT do the updates, and installed
libgtkmm-2.4-dev and it worked. I'm installing the updates now. We;ll see
how that goes *grin*.

I updated and cannot reproduce the crash anymore. Is there another way

I downloaded your mailbox file, and had a look at the headers, and I
cannot see any missing critical header (which would be a good reason for
a non-displayable email).
I then added the mailboxfile into my Evo (2.23.4 and 2.23.6 trunk).
