It might also be worthy to note that this issue can be caused with the
way VLC handles the SMB access. If you are trying to connect to an SMB
share through VLC it will apparently use its own SMB Access Module
which looks to default to using the current username and no password.

I think I found the problem.
Instead of copying files to the new user home I hided some directories
(chown to root and chmod to 700).
Here is a list of the directories in my home with number of files and
size.
opt: 12912 files / 349M
bin: 168 files / 1.9M
data/Desktop: 498 files / 6.1G
Just want to add, that the xdg-user-dir setting also explains why the
CPU load and usage latency got worse when mounting a remote share - the
mount point was below ~/data/ .

I had the problem at the very beginning of using Hardy. Then it
evaporated... But it has appeared again ! My system is absolutely up to
date... Problem exists with a Logitech Wake Desktop, and an old common
Dell keyboard.

When installing new software applications or installing new updates, the
above error is displayed. Have tried running a terminal with the
