[Bug 280148] Re: g-s-d needs to set mouse properties when a new device appears

2008-10-31 Thread William Grant
As people have mentioned here, I have a gnome-settings-daemon in my PPA
to fix this. We can hopefully get the patch blessed by upstream and some
Ubuntu GNOME people, and SRU it.

** Summary changed:

- After resume, ALPS touchpad fully functional, but with wrong settings
+ g-s-d needs to set mouse properties when a new device appears

** Description changed:

- Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-input-synaptics
+ Some input devices regularly disappear and reappear (for example, when
+ they're unplugged), others feel the need to disappear when the computer
+ is suspended, and yet others will decide to vanish for a little while
+ for no reason at all!

- After resume from suspend to ram, ALPS touchpad ignores settings in
- gnome-mouse-properties. According to settings, 'Mouse clicks with
- touchpad' is disabled options, but taping on touchpad produces 'clicks'.
- Enabling and disabling that option fixes the issue - until next suspend.
+ This is mildly unfortunate with input-hotplug, as the actual X devices
+ vanish as well. When they come back, they reappear with the default
+ settings. gnome-settings-daemon needs to know to reset properties when a
+ new device appears.

2008-10-31 Thread William Grant
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 280148 ***

This is probably caused by your touchpad deciding to wander off when
it's idle for a while... or just because it's bored and feels like
annoying you. When it reappears, it won't know about the settings.
gnome-settings-daemon needs to notice this and set them.

2008-10-31 Thread josef.sabl
I absolutely hate this bug. Am I weirdo too?

Even 30 (and I really doubt that many are interested)
doesn't mean much against millions of users.
How many of those millions you think will go throught the process of
registering here at launchpad and complain here? Not many, lots of them just
dump OS as flawed or grind teeth. 30 fix requests is a huge number by my
scales.

I am sure that feature which requires user to digg through forums to find a
fix for such a basic feature as resizing window is a bug and requires
immediate correction.

[Bug 160311] Re: Window Resize Difficult (Window Border Thickness)

2008-10-31 Thread Richard
Ubuntu aims to be usable by ordinary human beings and accessible to the
disabled. This issue is hurting those goals as follows:

(1) Usability: Windows (95 onwards), Mac OS and KDE all have the ability
to change border thickness *because clicking on a thin border is a
problem for some people*. Microsoft, Apple and the KDE team all added
this feature for a reason, and don't require you to change theme to
change the border thickness. Border thickness is not a problem for many
people I'm sure, but Ubuntu is missing out on part of its target market.

(2) Accessibility: some people have motor control disabilities, e.g.
tremor in the hand - it's important for them that it's *really easy* to
set a larger window border, even on a smaller monitor. Ubuntu has
relatively good support for visually impaired users - why not for users
with motor control problems? Note that elderly people often have
problem controlling the mouse (if they are new to computer), which is
another accessibility issue - if you are struggling to accurately
position the mouse pointer, a small window border makes it harder still.

(3) Look and Feel: People should be able to choose a nice theme that
they like (or is accessible to them), and independently tweak the border
thickness - what if you hate blue but the only theme with a thicker
border is blue? More importantly, what if you are visually impaired
*and* have motor control problems, so you need a high-contrast theme,
yet the only themes with a wide border are low contrast.

The fact that only 30 people have commented here is misleading - only
a tiny percentage of those experiencing this problem will bother to find
the right bug and register on Launchpad. It's very likely it's
affecting tens to hundreds of thousands of people, assuming Ubuntu's
user base of 6 million is correct.

Finally, Ubuntu should be *better* than Mac OS, Windows, etc - this is
one area where its GNOME flavour is behind the competition.

[Bug 117514] Re: seahorse does not synchronize keys with keyserver

2008-10-31 Thread Derek White
Official 8.10 Intrepid
seahorse 2.24.1

Backed-up my secring.gpg pubring.gpg from my old 8.04 system and
imported it using Key-Import.

Made some changes to my key, but really didn't change anything.

Sync to ldap://keyserver.pgp.com gives this:
   bigbCouldn't publish keys to server/b/big
   entry has no objectClass attribute

Sync to hkp://pgp.mit.edu:11371 gives this:
   bigbCouldn't publish keys to server/b/big
   Error decoding keyblock

Is this a regression?

Random question/comment while I have your attention: Why does seahorse
let me sign my own key, when it really doesn't do anything, and doesn't
even tell me that nothing was done?

I can confirm this with Finnish keyboard (local and remote). Also it is
really frustrating that you can't use keyboard shortcuts like ctrl-d or

[Bug 260492] Re: opening a directory using an application change associations incorrectly

2008-10-31 Thread geologic
Just did a network upgrade to the official release of 8.10, and had this
problem. Any of the directories from 'Places' opened with Totem. From
the desktop nautilus launched as normal. I was then able to change 'Open
With...' and luckily changing just one folder fixed them all.

Also, possibly related[?] is that the folder icons used in 'Places' are
the default Gnome icons, and do not match my icon theme. Before
upgrading they matched, but are now different. All other icons in
'Places' are the same, including 'Home' and 'Desktop'.

[Bug 249373] Re: gnome session does not start window manager nor restores the previous session

2008-10-31 Thread R.
Hi Kees,

Someone has a workaround, but it requires a bit of effort, so it seems:
http://blogs.sun.com/mattman/entry/gnome_2_24_session_save1.

The easiest way is have Gnome start your apps by setting them in your
gnome-session-properties (System - Preferences - Sessions), but it's not
the same as saving your session.

Another workaround is hibernate your computer instead of shutting it
down.

At work I depend heavily on saving sessions, so I'm a bit crippled too.

Cheers, R.

Here is what needs to be done:
 - have a new key (need_fixup or somthing) defaulting to false

This is the first (and only) line of x11-common in the terminal log. The

Now this looks like x11-common got not unpacked before apt ran

problem for some people*.

[Bug 185311] Re: hardy, locking assertion failure, xorg/libsdl

2008-10-31 Thread charly4711
Bryce,

as far as fixing the applications are concerned, I don't quite follow
why applications that used to work need to be fixed because libxcb
apparently one way or another changes an API contract that it has no
business of changing.

That being said, if somebody claims its the application's fault, I'd
really appreciate some information about what I need to fix around
somthing that wasn't even apparently broken with Xlib.

I can attach 3 backtraces of various ways xvidcap deadlocks with libxcb
(variant 3 resulting in a complete X11 lockup, so I need to ssh into the
box and kill xvidcap). The only thing I can see is that in one thread
I'm trying to do XShmGetImage on a locked X display while in the other
thread GTK does its stuff. Have I been doing this completely wrong for
years without noticing? And I've just recorded more than an hour of
screencasts without a single hang with your non-xcb libraries.

This issue keeps me from upgrading to intrepid because first I'll have
to find a way of compiling the required X11 libs without xcb.

[Bug 291463] [NEW] gnome-panel: main menu: arrow icon blemish

2008-10-31 Thread deibhaid
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

I believe this was submitted before for hardy.

The issue is that, with gnome-panel when the main menu applet is used,
there is a small arrow that shows on the panel, creating a visual
blemish with whatever themed menu icon people use.

the line in: gnome-panel/panel-menu-button.c
could just be modified to read

has-arrow, FALSE,
instead of:
has-arrow, TRUE,

btw what is the reason for having the arrow there?

[Bug 291519] [NEW] totem volume resets to a lower value when clicking on its volume control

2008-10-31 Thread marco.pallotta
Public bug reported:

I have realized of this issue after passing the patch gst-plugins-bad0.10 (bug
#208068) but I'm not sure if it was present before.
I play a video and set the totem volume control to maximum then I click again
to the volume control to reset it to another value but the volume drop down
automatically to a lower value. Then every time I click on it, the totem volume
resets automatically to a lower value.

[Bug 290674] Re: Setting the keyboard repeat speed has no effect

2008-10-31 Thread Roman Snitko
I tried adding:

  Option AutoRepeat 175 30

in Input device section in xorg.conf and then logout/login. Didn't work.
Then I discovered Ubuntu uses /etc/default/console-setup to store this
settings, and added:

  AUTOREPEAT=175 30

Didn't work either.

[Bug 291477] [NEW] Icons do not change when changing icon theme

2008-10-31 Thread Nxx
Public bug reported:

Most of icons do not change when changing icon theme.

This is for folder icons, icons of disk drives, icons of computer, home
folder, network servers, trash, .exe files etc.

Some themes though, change more icons than others. For example, some
themes change folder icons while others do not.

Not only in Nautilus affected: in other applications icons may change
and may not, sometimes in Nautilus icons do not change while in other
applications do. In gnome-appearance-settings in theme previews icons
always displayed as it should be.

There is a workaround, the following commands executed in the theme
folder:

cd ~/.icons/OSX/scalable/places/
ln -s gnome-fs-directory.png folder.png
ln -s gnome-fs-directory.png gtk-directory.png

But this works only for one theme and only for folder icon. There are no
known workarounds for icons of devices for example.

** Affects: nautilus (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New
