OK - this "magically" started working again, as it did before I upgraded
to Karmic months ago. I'm running 2.6.31-11-generic kernel. That was the
only real change I can attribute. After rebooting from updating it
started working. I did add this to my Xorg, but it didn't work under the
old kernel.
I've tried this track on Ubuntu 9.10 and it does not cause the crash.
Can you reproduce in 9.04 or 9.10? Thanks!

Never mark a bug’s Ubuntu task as “Fix Released” unless the fix is
actually in Ubuntu. That might cause the Ubuntu maintainer to forget
that they still need to upload the fix!
When the fix is uploaded to Ubuntu, that will cause this bug to
automatically be marked “Fix Released”.

If the fix is committed upstream, then that is the appropriate status
for the upstream task, not Ubuntu, as per
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Status . I will mark this as Triaged
against the upstream task, which should be updating automatically but
perhaps is not.

I have a related issue:
Every time I change the master volume using my laptop media keys (lg s1, ac97
audio) or using an app slider, it resets pcm & front volumes to 100%.
This means that I get crackling audio almost immediately (max pcm and front
does that), and I must keep master volume down
Should be fix released. Not yet applied in Karmic.

I was just reminded that this is in fact possible, using the ahrdware
tab in the preferences applet. Not intuative, but possible. You choose
the hardware profile you want in the hardware tab down the bottom, using

Oh to address your question more. Karmic is yes. Many of the machines
can support up to 6 outputs. Another things is some have reconfigurable
ports (the red port for recording, can be switched to a surround port at
times). They very. Most have dedicated ports for (3 ports for 6 speakers
