Same problem here: transfer starts well (about 15-20 Mb) but immediately (in
less than 20 seconds falls to 7-5 Mb) slows down upt to 1,5 Mb or less. That

The workaround was not completely installed, and I enabled the Java window fix.

I had this problem in ubuntu 10.04 and have it still. mkv files will run
smoothly for anything from one minute to half an hour or even more. Then
it starts to get choppy but the audio is file. Restarting totem fixes
the problem and I can even play the parts of the mkv file which were
choppy before

Bug is still in 10.04 LTS which uses gtk+ 2.20.. According to
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=581150 , this was patched in
gtk+ 2.16.. did the patch not make it into ubuntu? OR perhaps the patch
doesn't fix the problem.

repair the credibility damage the presence of this bug and others in a
release version has done to them.
Ubuntu is a community project, while Canonical invest ressources to work
