To solve the problem, I wrote a little shell script that will do a `ls`
on each FTP mounted with gvfs every 15 seconds, and that seems to do the
trick. I attached it to my message, hopefully it will help someone else.

I think I've found the problem. It seems that the settings aren't
flushed to disk immediately, so if you log out quickly after changing a
setting in gnome-volume-control, then it is forgotten. If you wait a

I can confirm this today, using an updated 11.04. After a clean install,
the dialog will say that login sounds are disabled, even though they are
enabled. If you enable it in the dialog, then disable it, then the login
sound is disabled, and the dialog displays the correct values.

I had a similar problem with empathy after upgrading to 11.04, mine was a
little worse.
Empathy could not connect to Gtalk at all using the supplied defaults for
Google.
