[Bug 636223] Re: [Maverick] DAAP playlists missing

2011-05-06 Thread H3g3m0n
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 665168 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/665168

I think this is a separate bug.

There is no problem connecting to the DAAP shares them selfs. I'm
running on the standard port.

The problem is that there are not DAAP shared playlists showing up
(which come under DAAP shares). They use to do this.

Actually, this 'bug' is the only way I found to open a new instance of gedit,

If it is fixed, it would be nice to get a new Unity quicklist for gedit in the

On Ubuntu 11.04, with or without compiz, I can swap windows in the

[Bug 767095] Re: 1 pixel icons in notification-area-applet for qt softwares

2011-05-06 Thread Edward Deng
My problem happens on 11.04 amd64, Unity desktop. I installed Skype
through Software Center. At the beginning, everything goes well.
After a long time use (maybe 1 or 2 hours, actually it's not long on my
machine), Skype icon in notification area disappears, but the process
is still running. There's even no 1 pixel indicator. No message can be
received and no notification.I have to kill the process and start
Skype again. No workaround is found.

[Bug 595008] Re: should port the GNOME cdbs custom rules to dh7

2011-05-06 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
This bug was fixed in the package pkgbinarymangler - 96

---
pkgbinarymangler (96) oneiric; urgency=low

  * pkgstripfiles: Symlink identical documentation to depending packages. This
was ported from cdbs' debhelper.mk, but makes more sense here because more
packages use dh7 these days, we want to reduce the cdbs delta to Debian,
and we want to centralize all our Ubuntu specific package mangling to one
place to reduce confusion. This can be suppressed by setting
$NO_DOC_PKG_MANGLE, or $CDBS_NO_DOC_SYMLINKING for backwards
compatibility. (First part of LP #595008)
  * pkgstriptranslations: Symlink identical GNOME help files (which often
happens for images which are just copied verbatim from C, but are not
actually translated). In the new test case for this also check that the
static translation tarball is correct. This provides another Ubuntu
specific general packaging change which previously was done in cdbs'
debhelper.mk. (LP: #595008)
  * pkgstripfiles: Break down into separate functions, to make the code easier
to read and maintain.
  * test/run: Simplify code with recently introduced sed_control() helper
method.
  * test/run: Replace obsolete assert_() and failIf() calls with assertTrue()
and assertFalse().
  * test/run, test/pickle_argv: Port to Python 3. Change build dependency from
python to python3.

[Bug 737261] Re: Totem fails to play anything

2011-05-06 Thread Prunus dulcis
Happens to me as well, and also vlc has issues in 11.04 - so it may be a more
generic problem than with totem.
Happens with lots of files - this file triggers the problem too:
http://www.archive.org/download/RogerRamjetInTheCowboy/RogerRamjet008TheCowboy.ogv

totem reports on the command line:
The program 'totem' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadValue (integer parameter out of range for operation)'.
  (Details: serial 128 error_code 2 request_code 133 minor_code 19)

vlc reports on the command line (plays audio but does not show video):

[Bug 486154] Re: System beep broken in Karmic despite heroic efforts to fix it

2011-05-06 Thread Thomas Hood
Pete, thanks for the information.

To summarize what I now know

There are several separate issues. One is the traditional square-wave
beep function. Many people say that it is necessary to:

  * Un-blacklist the pcspkr kernel module and load it.

However, I have just discovered that this module is not needed on a
Lenovo ThinkPad X61 for echo 3 /proc/acpi/ibm/beep to work.
The latter requires only the thinkpad-acpi module.

Orthogonal to that issue is getting terminal and other bells to
play in the new way, via X, the window manager and pulseaudio.

For the terminal bell to ring, it is still necessary to:

  * enable Terminal|Edit|Profile Preferences|General|Terminal bell
  * set gconf setting desktop|gnome|peripherals|keyboard|bell_mode
to on.

Under natty compiz then the gconf setting
apps | metacity | general | audible_bell makes no difference.

Before receiving the tip from Pete Ashdown I was re-enabling the
compiz-managed newfangled audible bell by deselecting and selecting
System Settings|CompizConfig Settings Manager|General|Audible Bell.
This actually enabled the traditional square-wave bell!

But now I see that
  * pactl upload-sample /usr/share/sounds/gnome/default/alerts/glass.ogg
bell.ogg
suffices to enable the newfangled bell.

After logging out and in the bell was still enabled without my having
to run xset, but I can imagine it may be necessary to run
  * xset b on
  * xset b 100
under some circumstances.

[Bug 777165] Re: Since Upgrade to Ubuntu 11.04 evolution it is unstable

2011-05-06 Thread The Prince of Cats
I am also having issues with Evolution since the update to 11.04 - no
crashes yet, but it has become impossible to actually use and I have
consistently had to close it with the system monitor. CPU use spikes to
100% (but drops to allow other processes) and Waiting Channel reads '0'
until I kill it. The window is blank if I change to another one and
then back, if that helps.

It may be an issue with IMAP, since the last thing it tries to do before
falling over is to access my IMAP email.

[Bug 767095] Re: 1 pixel icons in notification-area-applet for qt softwares

2011-05-06 Thread Dustin Kirkland
Separating the tasks for Natty and Oneiric.

This bug is killing me. Makes Skype basically unusable. I've marked
the Natty task 'high' and targeted it at natty-updates. Hopefully,
hopefully, hopefully the Desktop team can take a look at this and get it
fixed in an SRU. I'll gladly do test natty-proposed packages.

Thanks,
Dustin

[Bug 774273] Re: unlock screen no longer works

2011-05-06 Thread Maarten L. Hekkelman
Happens here too, each time I activate the screensaver I cannot log back
in normally. Started this morning. I'm running maverick btw.

If this happens, you can choose 'switch user' and then login again using
the normal GDM login screen. So it is the screen saver dialog that does
not recognise the password. auth.log says:

All I had to do was restart. I do occasionally have problems with my

bar, and I can restart my graphics by right clicking it and selecting
reload window manager.

[Bug 488244] Re: Evolution netbook resizing goes wrong

2011-05-06 Thread Swen Kühnlein
I also can confirm that this is still an issue in natty. Besides the
fact that several settings dialogs are too high to fit on the screen -
making it rather hard to hit the buttons on the bottom (requires
maximizing and even then the dialogs behave strangly, scrolling up or
down on any click inside so that you have to use tab and enter to press
the buttons) - the main screen also behaves utterly strange; I can not
resize the window splitting (grabbing the splitter has no effect) and
quite often simple actions like changing the folder might result in
misplacement of groups of UI elemnts.

Screen resolution is 1024x600 using Unity.

[Bug 614362] Re: Evolution does not update messaging indicator highlight if message status changes to read

2011-05-06 Thread Callum Macdonald
This bug exists for me also on Ubuntu 11.04 / Evolution 2.32.2-0ubuntu7,
and has existed since the indicators were first introduced.

I notice that when a new messages is received, if I click it and CTRL-K
or Message Mark As Read, the Messaging Indicator does not update.
However, if I double click the message (to open it) then, the messaging
indicator updates. In fact, the indicator updates if I open any message
at all, but not based on mark as read / unread.

[Bug 778475] [NEW] gvfs requests wrong WebDAV URL

2011-05-06 Thread Martin Landl
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gvfs

Ubuntu: 10.04 LTS
gvfs: 1.6.1-0ubuntu1build1

When connection to a WebDAV Server using Places-Connect to Server

Service type: WebDAV (http) / Secure WebDAV (https) // tried both
Server: myhost.mydomain.com
Port: empty
Folder: foo/bar
User Name: admin

The connection is established successfully and the folder is opened in a new
nautilus window. I can see the expected file/folder structure.
When closing and reopening this window, I can see no files whatsoever.

While investigating using Wireshark, I expected a PROPFIND to
http://myhost.mydomain.com/foo/bar; but instead I found PROPFIND requests to
http://myhost.mydomain.com/;.
As on this URL I have no control over the HTTP response, the gvfs WebDAV client
receives a PROPFIND response with no listed resources.

While further investigating, I stumbled up the .gvfs folder in my home
directory. This contains a folder WebDAV on myhost.mydomain.com. This
folder seems empty in the terminal, but when issuing an ls -l command,
a PROPFIND is sent to the URL http://myhost.mydomain.com/;. Also here I
would expect http://myhost.mydomain.com/foo/bar;.

Funny thing: if I issue ls foo/bar within the .gvfs/WebDAV on
myhost.mydomain.com folder, the correct PROPFIND request is sent and I
can see the file/folder structure in the terminal output.

There seems to be a problem with the given folder in the Connect to
Server menu.

http://myhost.mydomain.com/foo/bar; but instead I found PROPFIND requests to
http://myhost.mydomain.com/;.
As on this URL I have no control over the HTTP response, the gvfs WebDAV
client receives a PROPFIND response with no listed resources.

[Bug 437429] Re: No GUI to configure/disable login sound

2011-05-06 Thread FernanAguero
This feature is being requested repeatedly, in different forums. The
issue is certainly not urgent or bad enough to merit attention from
developers, but it _IS_ annoying.

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gdm/+bug/437429
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alsa-utils/+bug/45739
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gdm/+bug/114160
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=438707
https://blueprints.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+spec/mute-sound-on-login

I'm posting a comment to this one because it seems to be the one who is
getting more attention. But it seems like there are different
interpretations for the 'silent boot' issue: i) a problem with GDM (how
to set up a silent login); ii) a more general issue with Ubuntu (make it
respond to the 'mute button' present in laptops).

Ubuntu will keep its annoying status for the foreseeable future if this
is not addressed.

Almost all laptops sold nowadays have mute buttons. All laptop owners
sooner or later will come across that moment when you wish your laptop
would respond to the mute button. When reading in a silent library, in
class, when listening to someone else's presentation, or at 4 am in the
morning when the rest of the house is fast asleep.

Read the other bug reports on this issue. Windows allows you to mute the
laptop during the boot/startup process. And so does the Mac OS on their
laptops.

In my case (Dell XPS M1210, Ubuntu 10), the mute button works late
during the boot process. The machine starts responding to it halfway
after starting the login process in gdm ... with unpredictable results
(sometimes during the greeting sound from my gnome session, sometimes
after that).

I don't care whether the mute button in my laptop actually triggers a
gdm conf change, or if it does its magic at a lower level (sound
system). I just want the damn laptop to be quiet!

The proposed solution of having a GUI to configure this is useless in
many situations, because you often realize too late that you'd like a
silent startup (shut down the laptop last night without considering
where your next boot will be).

Different but reports make attempts at identifying the culprit (gdm,
alsa) and in setting some aims and deliverables. The configuration
tweaks one can make in gdm are OK for desktops, but although they may
have the same final result (no sound on login) they do not address the
other main issue with laptops: making Ubuntu respond to the mute
button.

We need to raise the status of this issue. This particular bug report is
about GDM, maybe we have to take this somewhere else? pulseaudio? the
kernel? I'm pretty ignorant about these myself, so please bare with me,
but I think this issue can't go on like this ... Windows has been
responding to the mute button in laptops since Windows 95!

[Bug 486154] Re: System beep broken in Karmic despite heroic efforts to fix it

2011-05-06 Thread Robert Schroll
Thomas, Pete:

Problems with the system bell are subtle and strongly dependent on what
exactly you are trying to do. One of these factors is the window
manager. This bug is primarily focused on getting the system bell
working under Metacity. gconf twiddling *may* be necessary in this
case; Pulse Audio commands will do nothing. If you are trying to get
the system bell working under Compiz or Unity, please see bug #769314.

I would have thought the simple fact that the system bell depends on
window manager would be enough to convince people that the whole system
needs a re-think, but apparently not.
