[Bug 595008] Re: should port the GNOME cdbs custom rules to dh7
This bug was fixed in the package pkgbinarymangler - 96 --- pkgbinarymangler (96) oneiric; urgency=low * pkgstripfiles: Symlink identical documentation to depending packages. This was ported from cdbs' debhelper.mk, but makes more sense here because more packages use dh7 these days, we want to reduce the cdbs delta to Debian, and we want to centralize all our Ubuntu specific package mangling to one place to reduce confusion. This can be suppressed by setting $NO_DOC_PKG_MANGLE, or $CDBS_NO_DOC_SYMLINKING for backwards compatibility. (First part of LP #595008) * pkgstriptranslations: Symlink identical GNOME help files (which often happens for images which are just copied verbatim from C, but are not actually translated). In the new test case for this also check that the static translation tarball is correct. This provides another Ubuntu specific general packaging change which previously was done in cdbs' debhelper.mk. (LP: #595008) * pkgstripfiles: Break down into separate functions, to make the code easier to read and maintain. * test/run: Simplify code with recently introduced sed_control() helper method. * test/run: Replace obsolete assert_() and failIf() calls with assertTrue() and assertFalse(). * test/run, test/pickle_argv: Port to Python 3. [Bug 486154] Re: System beep broken in Karmic despite heroic efforts to fix it
Pete, thanks for the information. To summarize what I now know There are several separate issues. One is the traditional square-wave beep function. Many people say that it is necessary to: * Un-blacklist the pcspkr kernel module and load it. However, I have just discovered that this module is not needed on a Lenovo ThinkPad X61 for echo 3 /proc/acpi/ibm/beep to work. The latter requires only the thinkpad-acpi module. Orthogonal to that issue is getting terminal and other bells to play in the new way, via X, the window manager and pulseaudio. For the terminal bell to ring, it is still necessary to: * enable Terminal|Edit|Profile Preferences|General|Terminal bell * set gconf setting desktop|gnome|peripherals|keyboard|bell_mode to on. Under natty compiz then the gconf setting apps | metacity | general | audible_bell makes no difference. Before receiving the tip from Pete Ashdown I was re-enabling the compiz-managed newfangled audible bell by deselecting and selecting System Settings|CompizConfig Settings Manager|General|Audible Bell. This actually enabled the traditional square-wave bell! But now I see that * pactl upload-sample /usr/share/sounds/gnome/default/alerts/glass.ogg bell.ogg suffices to enable the newfangled bell. After logging out and in the bell was still enabled without my having to run xset, but I can imagine it may be necessary to run * xset b on * xset b 100 under some circumstances. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to metacity in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/486154 Title: System beep broken in Karmic despite heroic efforts to fix it -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

Separating the tasks for Natty and Oneiric. This bug is killing me. Makes Skype basically unusable. I've marked the Natty task 'high' and targeted it at natty-updates. Hopefully, hopefully, hopefully the Desktop team can take a look at this and get it fixed in an SRU. I'll gladly do test natty-proposed packages. I also can confirm that this is still an issue in natty. [Bug 778475] [NEW] gvfs requests wrong WebDAV URL

As on this URL I have no control over the HTTP response, the gvfs WebDAV client receives a PROPFIND response with no listed resources. While further investigating, I stumbled up the .gvfs folder in my home directory. This contains a folder WebDAV on myhost.mydomain.com. [Bug 437429] Re: No GUI to configure/disable login sound
This feature is being requested repeatedly, in different forums. The issue is certainly not urgent or bad enough to merit attention from developers, but it _IS_ annoying. https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gdm/+bug/437429 https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alsa-utils/+bug/45739 https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gdm/+bug/114160 https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=438707 https://blueprints.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+spec/mute-sound-on-login I'm posting a comment to this one because it seems to be the one who is getting more attention. But it seems like there are different interpretations for the 'silent boot' issue: i) a problem with GDM (how to set up a silent login); ii) a more general issue with Ubuntu (make it respond to the 'mute button' present in laptops). Ubuntu will keep its annoying status for the foreseeable future if this is not addressed. Almost all laptops sold nowadays have mute buttons. All laptop owners sooner or later will come across that moment when you wish your laptop would respond to the mute button. When reading in a silent library, in class, when listening to someone else's presentation, or at 4 am in the morning when the rest of the house is fast asleep. Read the other bug reports on this issue. Windows allows you to mute the laptop during the boot/startup process. And so does the Mac OS on their laptops. In my case (Dell XPS M1210, Ubuntu 10), the mute button works late during the boot process. The machine starts responding to it halfway after starting the login process in gdm ... with unpredictable results (sometimes during the greeting sound from my gnome session, sometimes after that). I don't care whether the mute button in my laptop actually triggers a gdm conf change, or if it does its magic at a lower level (sound system). I just want the damn laptop to be quiet! The proposed solution of having a GUI to configure this is useless in many situations, because you often realize too late that you'd like a silent startup (shut down the laptop last night without considering where your next boot will be). Different but reports make attempts at identifying the culprit (gdm, alsa) and in setting some aims and deliverables. The configuration tweaks one can make in gdm are OK for desktops, but although they may have the same final result (no sound on login) they do not address the other main issue with laptops: making Ubuntu respond to the mute button. We need to raise the status of this issue. This particular bug report is about GDM, maybe we have to take this somewhere else? pulseaudio? the kernel? I'm pretty ignorant about these myself, so please bare with me, but I think this issue can't go on like this ... Windows has been responding to the mute button in laptops since Windows 95! ** Bug watch added: GNOME Bug Tracker #438707 https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=438707 -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gdm in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/437429 Title: No GUI to configure/disable login sound -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

Thomas, Pete: Problems with the system bell are subtle and strongly dependent on what exactly you are trying to do. One of these factors is the window manager.
