[Bug 771633] Re: [Natty] Realtek ALC888 0x10ec0888 - mic not functional

2011-05-09 Thread Lucio M Nicolosi
Problem solved. What happened? I don't know.

Puzzled with the fact that I was the only guy in Ubuntu Natty planet
with a crashed sound, decided to give another try.

This time, instead of zsync-inc my .iso sources from
cdimage.ubuntu.com , zsync-ed from the actual Natty release in nearest
mirror (it shouldn't make any difference since I started seriously
testing Natty Beta just after the final release on April 28 - but, in
fact, there was a slight difference, less than .5%). Then burned a USB
stick from within the current and buggy Natty test install, instead of
using the Maverick application .

Booted from the USB stick in test Ubuntu mode, completely updated the
stick from the standard source, checked the microphone and of course it
didn't work.

Opened alsamixer in a terminal screen, because of
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pulseaudio/+bug/771739 -
and enabled the rear mic - standard in my system.

Tested the Sound Recorder again and voilà it works! This time without
the serious distortions observed before.

Installed Natty on HD again, (third or fourth time) now from this
special stick, tested sound and it works, updated (almost 200 Mb in
file updates up to now) and it works, installed Skype and it still
works, enabled NVidia last video driver, rebooted and Unity is there,
and I still don't like it but at least the sound works.

What really happened? I really don't know, but somehow it is was
magically solved. I guess David Henningsson will be
happy to know or perhaps a bit intrigued, like me.

2011-05-09 Thread Søren Holm
Gytis, I it so great that you are here.

I do not have any proof, but given that the bad commit in gtk
c282958fb4bb25c736c682735002d15c50cb44d0 realy just is an optimization,
the usage of the affected funtion must be somewhat wrong - or at least
missunderstood.

All other gtk-applications just as fine after as before the change. The
change is quite small.

[Bug 779773] [NEW] Empathy 'Previous Conversations' window grows wider forever

2011-05-09 Thread James Bunton
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: empathy

$ lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu 11.04
Release:11.04

$ apt-cache policy empathy
empathy:
  Installed: 2.34.0-0ubuntu3
  Candidate: 2.34.0-0ubuntu3
  Version table:
 *** 2.34.0-0ubuntu3 0
500 http://au.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ natty/main amd64 Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

I'm using Ubuntu Classic (gnome 2 with metacity window manager).

Steps to reproduce:
 1) Run Empathy
 2) Chat to somebody
 3) Right-click on their name in the contact list
 4) Choose Previous Conversations
 5) The window grows horizontally until it reaches the right edge of the
screen. Then it keeps growing until it reaches the left edge of the screen.
Then it keeps growing to the right again. It makes no difference if the window
is maximised or not. It still grows forever!

What I expected to happen:
The window should open at some size and it should stay that size.

Thanks.

[Bug 185165] Re: Ubuntu does not open MS Windows internet shortcuts with 'url' extension

2011-05-09 Thread Polemos
This is not only a bug (since the mime-type
type=application/x-mswinurl does exist but doesn't work) but also a
usability problem.

-Being able to handle the MS-url extension in ubuntu is the same as
being able to handle MS-doc extension.-

Finding a workplace enviroment so much better than windoze and getting
stuck for 3 days just to be able to work in it for such an unexpected
annoyance is really a shame.

Running a Compaq Presariu CQ60 (I thinks its the 211DX but I don't have
it handy to verify):

2.16Ghz Intel Celeron 585
2gig RAM
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 4500M

Running the fiberlight screensaver graphic.

I have it set to 'do nothing' if the lid is closed.

I typically let it sit running the Transmission bit torrent client, and
often if it sits for long periods with the lid closed, when I open it
back up the screen is on the desktop with no screen saver running. I
can move the mouse but it doesn't respond to the keyboard or any mouse
clicks. I have to drop to a virtual terminal (typically ctrl-alt-F2)
and do a straignt ctrl-alt-del to reboot (I tried killing the
screensaver process but that didn't work; didn't try restarting X yet
seperate from a reboot). This same set up ran 9.10 fine, BTW; the
current set up was a fresh install of 11.04 (An upgrade install failed
so I had to wipe and start from scratch).

Just adding my little bit to the info; I will try the 'blank screen'
workaround though in the meantime before just deciding to go with Mint
XFCE ;-)

[Bug 779805] [NEW] Breaks: seahorse-plugins ( 3.0) cannot be resolved as there's no seahorse 3.0 in the archive

2011-05-09 Thread Martin-Éric Racine
Public bug reported:

[Bug 779509] Re: keyboard layout settings not remembered

2011-05-09 Thread Gilles Tournier
I have tried your suggestion to reconfigure console-data, but it does not
change the problem. Furthermore, the behavior after reconfiguring console-data
is the same as reported in the bug description: the settings are NOT remembered
across reboots and I always end up with the wrong keyboard in a terminal, until
I reset the settings via the indicator and then both X and console have the
correct keyboard map.
I have also tried to reconfigure and reinstall gnome-settings-daemon; to no
avail...
In my opinion, console-data is not involved with this bug.

[Bug 779911] [NEW] evolution initial settings not accessable on a 1024x600 netbook

2011-05-09 Thread Bazon
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

steps to reproduce:

1. if you already have a configured evolution, create a new user to reproduce
the initial settings dialog.
2. log in with the new user and start evolution
3. the now opening configuration dialog is too big, so that the next button
on the bottom is not visible. One only can access it by hitting Tab blind.
Trying to maximize that window is also no working solution, as the window then
jumps on click so that each click goes to the void.

This is especially bad, as evolution is ubuntus default e-mail
application. configuring it is one of the first steps for a new user, it
would be good, if frustration would be avoided then.

(this happened at least with german language settings)

[Bug 757610] Re: Cannot start icewm from the login page

2011-05-09 Thread Bob Barry
The fault is in icewmbg, but to work around it:

  - delete or rename /usr/bin/icewmbg
  - create /usr/local/bin/icewmbg, containing:
  #!/bin/sh
  xsetroot -solid steelblue
  # colors are defined in /usr/share/X11/rgb.txt
  - sudo chmod +x /usr/local/bin/icewmbg

Many other utilities (xview, etc) may be used similarly.

[Bug 773063] Re: [Natty] gnome-about-me box doesn't remember contents

2011-05-09 Thread Luis Mondesi
Please fix this as this is really annoying. All the info I had is now
gone. I usually populate this stuff even though it's not really being
used from anywhere that I can think of. But seeing it gone now reminds
me of how fragile Ubuntu Linux desktops really are... It looks like
every time I use some feature is broken in one way or another.

Natty could be the way of the future, but breaking everything in its
path is not the way. More QA is needed.

[Bug 703191] Re: BGR-ordered subpixel font rendering appears broken/nonfunctional in Gnome/GTK+

2011-05-09 Thread Jens Reimann
I have the same problem with natty (11.04). I upgraded from 10.04 where
the default setting RGB worked fine an came out (after a clean install)
with RGB and BGR providing the same, shifted, output. So I would assume
that instead of RGB (which is selected) BGR is always used for rendering
since RGB worked fine for me before that.

I tried with:

ATI Technologies Inc Redwood PRO [Radeon HD 5500 Series]: Closed and open
source drivers
nVidia Corporation G94 [GeForce 9600 GT] (rev a1): Closed and open source
drivers

all on natty 11.04 (release).

The changes of hardware or drivers does not seem to make a difference.

Monitors are: Philips 220WS using DVI and H-W22S using VGA

[Bug 779990] [NEW] nautilus does not update free space (or not properly) after delete operation

2011-05-09 Thread Jay S.
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

A session of deleting or moving multiple large files (typically one or a
few at a time) frequently results in the amount of free space being
updated incorrectly. At some stage, the space count does not reflect a
delete/move operation at all; this can happen repeatedly, producing a
count that diverges noticeably from effective free space. Occasionally,
a new delete operation will restore a proper overall count but I fail to
see any logic or pattern. I do get the impression it is more likely to
happen when moving files between nautilus tabs or over NFS.

The numbers are consistent with the output of df and gparted but
disagree with the output of du. At the moment, my home partition (60GB,
XFS) reports 49.7GB of free space; du reports only some 900MB actually
in use. That is after downloading and deleting/moving some 25GB of
files.

The only solution I have found to restore a proper free space count consists in
rebooting. None of the following has any effect:
- syncing
- logging out
- closing and restarting nautilus
- killing nautilus
- checking Trash in the .local directory for any lingering files (none)
- manually creating bogus files using dd and deleting them in an attempt to
trigger a proper update

[Bug 779992] [NEW] Contacts not syncing with Google Accounts

2011-05-09 Thread Jonners59
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

I am using Ubuntu 11.04 - the Natty Narwhal and fully up to date.
Evolution Evolution 2.32.2
:~$ apt-cache policy pkgname
N: Unable to locate package pkgname

I upgraded from Ubuntu 10.10 to 11.04 on 3 machines (4 more to go). I
expected that when I went in to Evolution, contacts that the Google
accounts would be there and they would show all my contacts.

WHat Happened Instead:
When I got in to Evolution, my eMail and Calendar accounts were there and they
worked fine. In Contacts the Contact accounts were still there and all the
account info, BUT the accounts would not sync and were empty. I could not send
eMails, Set calendar items and I have no access to my on-line contacts.

I tried deleting the accounts and re installing them but I get the same
problem. And a message that states it can not authenticate.

I am not new to Ubuntu/Evolution/Google and had the systems up and
running well before, it only occured AFTER the upgrade to 11.04 and is
the same on all 3 machines.

2011-05-09 Thread Robin Panis
brightness adjustment still freezes my system, however i did find some
workarounds

- in gnome power management disable the function to reduce brightness when
running on battery
- you can change the brightness in the nvidia-settings tool

some other observations:

- i even tried kernel 2.6.39 and reinstalled the nvidia driver but that
didn't helped aswell

I hope somebody can fix this problem

[Bug 780037] [NEW] Nautilus stops responding

2011-05-09 Thread Jay Deiman
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

Release: 11.04 (upgraded from 10.10)
Package: nautilus
Package Version: 1:2.32.2.1-0ubuntu13

I've seen this issue now on 2 different machines that I have upgraded to
11.04. After initially logging in to my account in Ubuntu classic,
Nautilus does not respond to any events until I kill it (and it
automatically restarts). I cannot open any of the file manager
Places, nor are any of the desktop icons responsive. It does seem to
work fine if I manually kill it, and let it automatically restart. As
far as I can tell so far, this only seems to happen on initial login
startup.

[Bug 762918] Re: Natty Screensaver freezes system after some period of inactivity

2011-05-09 Thread mdmcginn
Using Blank Screen at the office, I can't always get a terminal prompt
with Ctl-Alt-F2 and Ctl-Alt-Delete doesn't work either. Pressing the
power button does

Using Pictures Folder at home, I was greeted with one of my pictures,
and the cursor moved, even changed to a hand sometimes. Music was still
playing. But I couldn't get the picture to go away by using my mouse or
keyboard. I could use Ctl-Alt-F2 then Ctl-Alt-Delete. Because of monitor
settings/problems, I can't see the terminal prompt, and I haven't tried
any other commands to work around the issue at home.

[Bug 780050] [NEW] Evolution does not update google contacts address book

2011-05-09 Thread Giorgos Akrivas
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

I have a google account with about 300 contacts. Evolution can see them
and can update them, but when I change something from within the gmail
webpage, my changes don't show in Evolution. I tried setting the refresh
rate to 1 minute, and I also tried to restart evolution. Still the
changes don't show in Evolution. What is even stranger is that I even
tried to delete the address book and created again. Still the changes
don't show, as if it retains the address book in a local file even when
I delete it.

[Bug 780055] [NEW] Invert scroll direction on time field in new event dialog

2011-05-09 Thread levu
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

In the new Event dialog there is a time field. If you scroll down on
this field, the time increases (because 10:30 is the next item in the
list after 10:00), scroll up decreases the time. Here the scroll
direction should be inverted, because a scroll down means decreasing and
vice versa

[Bug 778176] Re: Nautilus freezes on FTP file transfer

Could this be a duplicate of
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/774096and
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/774395 ?

I don't see the XSession errors Ben Stanley reported though... But I
think they might be unrelated.

What I do get is the following in dmesg:
gvfsd-ftp[10868]: segfault at 0 ip (null) sp 7f26168bbd88 error

[Bug 779959] Re: evince fails on graph.ps file, display comes up and immediately disappears

2011-05-09 Thread Marcel Stimberg
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. I can't reproduce this bug here (Ubuntu 11.04) -- what
version of evince/Ubuntu are you using?

When reporting bugs in the future please use apport, either via the
appropriate application's Help - Report a Problem menu or using
'ubuntu-bug' and the name of the package affected. You can learn more
about this functionality at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs.
