Yesterday I restored some of my old folders from Maverick (10.10) and ~/.compiz
was one of them. Today, the topbar was exactly the same as OP. Removing it
fixes the issue.

Shared memory was already enable so this can not be the cause

I can confirm this bug in Ubuntu Natty 11.04. Also had it in Ubuntu
Maverick 10.10.
Steps to reproduce :
- launch a movie with Totem
- change the brightness setting in Totem preferences
- quit totem
- launch the same movie with vlc
-> the brightness will be the same configured in Tote
I have the same issue, but it also happens sometimes for the clock
applet and the system tray applet (which causes new problems because
programs with system tray icons report that they could not add their
icon to the tray).

In Receiving Options I had Use Custom Command to Contect to Server
checked and the field contained ssh -C -l %u %h exec /usr/sbin/imapd.
If I uncheck this, evolution appears to work.

Just a note, my duplicate (#775352) occurred for me on Intel video, so
this doesn't appear to be specific to the nvidia driver.

I'm not quite sure if anyone is reading this post, because it's an old
thread, but i'm currently using Ubuntu 11.04 with Rhytmbox Version
0.13.3 an i've got the same problem: There are no covers displayed
although they are in my ID3-Tags. Formly i was using Ubuntu 10.04 with
the 0.12.6 Version of R
Too bad there seems to be no progress whatsoever...
