[Bug 435719] Re: gvfs-fuse fails to start on NFS mounted homes

2011-12-20 Thread John Doe
Timo's workaround is just what I was looking for. I wouldn't use
/tmp/.gvfs-$USER though since that's a predictable location. On a
machine where lots of people log in to it someone could maliciously pre-
create such directories for other users resulting in at best denial of
service and at worst them being able to access other people's files. I'd
use mktemp

rmdir ~/.gvfs 2/dev/null || rm ~/.gvfs
ln -s $(mktemp -d) ~/.gvfs

[Bug 435719] Re: gvfs-fuse fails to start on NFS mounted homes

2011-12-20 Thread ossjunkie
@John: Did you take a look at the patch i have proposed, it wouldn't
need a big adjustment for your needs.

Anyhow great that there is some interest in this topic. Would be great
if we could bring a patch to the package in time for the precise
release.

What the patch is lacking beside John's suggestion is a routine for the
case where NFS isn't present anymore, so i works back and forth.

[Bug 435719] Re: gvfs-fuse fails to start on NFS mounted homes

2011-12-20 Thread John Doe
@ossjunkie: Didn't look at it before my previous comment as I hadn't
noticed it was there. It looks OK apart from the predictable location.
As you say, not a big adjustment to change that though.

# only apply when home directory is on NFS
if [ $(stat -f -L -c %T $HOME) = nfs ]; then
  # remove existing ~/.gvfs dir if empty
  rmdir ~/.gvfs
  if [ ! $? -eq 0 ]; then
# remove link or move unempty dir/file
if [ -h .gvfs ]; then
  rm ~/.gvfs
else
  mv ~/.gvfs ~/.gvfs_moved_for_gvfs-fuse_on_nfs
fi
  fi
  # create the symlink to unpredictably named directory with secure permissions
  ln -s $(mktemp -d) ~/.gvfs
fi

As well as creating an unpredictable location using mktemp also means
you don't need to worry about permissions since by default it creates
files/directories with read/write for owner only.

It seems to work fine when I first start the PC, but after opening 'Home

When browsing something from Chromium or another program it works fine.
The photos are shown as you can see here

but icons are just rectangles.

[Bug 906872] [NEW] Address book dialog has incorrect default size

2011-12-20 Thread Marc Deslauriers
Public bug reported:

When attempting to pick a recipient from the address book, the dialog
that pops up is too small, only displaying the first contact in the
list. I have to manually resize the window every single time to get it
to show more than one contact.

See the attached screenshot.

Steps to reproduce:
1- Open Evolution
2- Click on New (Mail Message)
3- Click on To:
4- The Select Contacts from Address Book dialog will pop up, and be too small
to see more than 1 contact.

Yet another regression that affects power users! I've been swearing

one. This sucks so much.

Yet another regression for power users. These things worked fine and
users like me relied on them. You just take and break them ADDING
NOTHING. It just looks different now. How does this get released?

This is wrong! This bug has nothing to do with being behind a proxy.

The error is:

WOCKY_CONNECTOR_ERROR_TLS_SESSION_FAILED (#7): SSL handshake error: -12:

[Bug 750740] Re: MacbookPro keyboard backlight toggle button not functional

2011-12-20 Thread Steve Magoun
Still broken in 11.10, though broken in a different way. In 11.10 the
backlight toggle behaves the same as the adjacent 'backlight brightness
down' button. It should toggle the backlight on/off, not decrease the
backlight brightness incrementally.

** Changed in: gnome-power-manager (Ubuntu)
   Status: Expired = Confirmed

** Tags added: apport-collected oneiric

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

My MacbookPro 3,1 has a keyboard backlight toggle button (F8) in
addition to the keyboard backlight up/down buttons (F9/F10). The
keyboard backlight up/down buttons correctly adjust the keyboard
backlight and display a notification, but the toggle button doesn't. Do
we need to handle GPM_BUTTON_KBD_BRIGHT_TOGGLE in addition to
GPM_BUTTON_KBD_BRIGHT_[UP,DOWN] in the key-handling code in gpm-
  backlight-kbd.c?

Yep, installing HAL lets gdecrypt start. So, workaround:

having in the support tracker at https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu if
you are uncertain if they are bugs. For help on reporting bugs, see

[Bug 907014] [NEW] Brasero Will Not Reliabily Burn Data Disks

2011-12-20 Thread Norm Suffern
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 11.10 Gnome Classic. Tried to burn audio files as mp3 to a
blank cd and dvd. I could get some regular mp3's to burn but can not
add other ones after. Mp4 files would not burn at all. Then tried
just a data disk with jpg files and could get it to burn but again could
not add new files after the first burn and the allow files to be added
box was checked on the first burn so it should be able.Put a couple
jpg files on a cd-rw for a test and it was ok, went to add another file
and it started writing but at end said there was an error and had to
eject cd manually. Reinserted cd and it can not now be recognized at
all, can not be blanked. Its like the cd does not exist. Works fine
if you put everything you want on the disk and do not try to add
anything else, trying to add extra files makes the cd/dvd useless.
And mp4 audio data files will not burn, error at end of burn, same sort
of thing when trying to add files to the data cd/dvd.DVD operates
normally other than above, loaded Ubuntu operation system with it and
loaded music and picture files saved on a data disk using Windows. All
audio files were purchased on line.

[Bug 575877] Re: gnome-keyring mysteriously asks for keyring password on startup

2011-12-20 Thread Chris Roberts
I am logging in with a password (i.e. not auto-login) and after about 10
seconds this keyring dialog pops up. Wireless is already working by
this time, and continues to work even if you cancel the dialog.

I have tried in Passwords Keys setting both default and login
passwords to the same, but this made no difference.

I can't help thinking that the only reason we don't have thousands of
people complaining about this, is that most people just blindly enter
the password and don't worry too much about it.

The popular workaround seems to be to remove the password altogether
from the keyring, and thus do away with security altogether. I
appreciate that we all think the bugs that affect us are a priority, but
I am surprised this only warrants a low priority tag, given the security
implications.

[Bug 907068] [NEW] Settings window looks like another backup window during backup

2011-12-20 Thread Zack Michener
Public bug reported:

My scenario:

Opened System Settings, Backup, set up a backup for the first time (to
an external hdd), set it off for the first backup. Closed the settings
window. Later, while it's still backing up, I open System Settings
again for something else, and I notice that in the launcher, instead of
two tile for deja dup and system settings, it shows two arrows next to
deja dup's icon (the safe), as if there were two backup windows open.

Basically, when a backup is in progress, the System Settings window
looks like another backup window in the launcher.

[Bug 160311] Re: Resizing windows by grabbing window borders is difficult

2011-12-20 Thread Nacnud Nosmoht
Broken on Oneiric. And I still haven't seen a fix. And I don't care if
this is or isn't a bug, and all the other nuances, I just want a way to
be able to resize windows. I can make it work if I have a mouse plugged
in, but using the touchpad, with my calloused fingers, it's completely
impossible to grab the window border to resize the window. COME ON GUYS
- THIS SHOULDN'T BE THAT HARD!

2011-12-20 Thread Piet Delport
Upstream gnome-screensaver closed this bug with a comment indicating
that the issue is likely in libxklavier, and may be fixed in a newer
version. According to Ray Strode, the bug may be fixed by this commit:
http://cgit.freedesktop.org/libxklavier/commit/?id=3d12615671ae69b718d23e5d4164eeeb4582

Just to confirm, i'm currently running and seeing the bug with the
latest version in Oneiric: libxklavier16 5.1-1ubuntu1

[Bug 893880] [NEW] Shutdown logs out instead of powering off

2011-12-20 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

I'm really not sure about the package name, but no way to easily find
out (that I know of) which package is actually misbehaving.

What happens is:
When I try to shut down the system, it logs off instead. Clicking shut down on
the subsequently shown login screen shows terminal output quickly (too quickly
to make out) and ends up back in the login screen.

Possibly related:
When I try to log in with fingerprint authentication, the same happens. (FP
auth succeeds - Log in button appears, when clicked -terminal output - log
in screen again) When I let the fingerprint auth time out, everything is just
peachy.

Platform is Lenovo X220, running Ubuntu 11.10, all updates run.
Disk is encrypted LVM.

I'll be happy to provide any log files, but will need instructions on
how to produce them.

[Bug 906712] Re: nautilus dir with subfolders marked with solid triangle

2011-12-20 Thread Sushi
For people who have TB of data.

It would make it easier when looking through directories for files and
understanding folder structure. Most of the time you know what is in the
folder by the folder name so if there was a way to indicate there were
no sub folders, you would not have to open the folder to find out what
is in it.

A clear triangle would still keep the one click 'expand folder'
functionality.

Even thunar for Xfce in 'tree view' does not show a triangle for folders
with no subfolders . Although I think a clear triangle would be better
for nautilus to keep the one click 'expand folder' functionality in all
parts of nautilus.

I hate to say it but even File manager M$widoze does this.

[Bug 777586] Re: The resolution is stuck at 1024x768

2011-12-20 Thread Bryce Harrington
You've got the laptop and external monitor set to mirrored. Mirrored
means Make both monitors look the same so X has to select a resolution
that both monitors have in common. LVDS1 supports 1280x800, 1024x768,
800x600, and 640x480. VGA1 supports 1280x1024, 1024x768, 800x600,
640x480, and 720x400. You can see only three resolutions are in common
and those are the three you are given as options.

Uncheck the 'mirrored' checkbox and arrange the monitors side by side or
one over the other, then you can use both at their maximum resolutions.
Or else turn your laptop monitor off when you're connected to the
external display.

Or, if you want something more exotic than gnome-display-properties
allows, you can do whatever you want using the xrandr command line tool.
For instance, you can set up viewports, scale or pan, and so on.
However these more advanced options are generally not what average users
are looking for, thus aren't supported in the GUI config tool's design.

2011-12-20 Thread N8N
I am having the same issue, when the computer goes to screensaver
tapping a key or moving the mouse will freeze the screensaver but will
not display the login screen. However if I type in my password I can
get back to my account. Obviously this is undesirable and won't work
for computers shared with multiple users. I believe that this is
related to GL screensavers only from info. that I have found on the web;
if I use blank screen as my screensaver everything works fine. Have
the same issue on two different machines both running 11.04.

[Don't delete the core or run this through the retracer. Usually the
retracer fails and deletes the core and then the bug becomes
unactionable. Keeping the core gives the option of manually retracing
later.]
