Ok, turns out I hadn't actually purged all the PPA packages correctly,
and so I somehow ended up with gnome-control-center 1:3.6.3-0ubuntu56
but libgnome-control-center1 1:3.10.1-0ubuntu1~saucy3 .
After I downgraded the former gnome3-team/gnome3 PPA packages to their
versions in trusty, this

This issue affects my freshly installed Trusty. BTW, I have a triple
screen setup, and the open source xserver-xorg-video-ati video driver
worked out of the box (great!). Unfortunately this persistent mouse
flickering and disappearing issue is a deal breaker for me. Moreover,
mouse cursor issue

I'm having this issue too. I'm a web developer and use Gedit on a daily
basis so this is making life difficult.
I did determine a few things though... It only occurs when there is a
scrollbar present. When the document is short enough and doesn't require
a scrollbar the font renders correctly.
