Just happened to me. It hangs the entire upgrade and it is impossible to
continue. The only thing you can do is to hard shut down the computer,
and notice it no longer boots.
Trying to fix packages in any form does not fix the problem.

when I execute a command although the cursor goes to the right place and
still blinks as it should the output is not shown until I press Enter

You can possibly work around this by selecting another input method (IM)
with 'im-config' or by removing ~/.xinputrc (which selects the default
for your locale) and then reboot (or restart X11—log out & back in is
not always enough).

The issue is still present, Gedit, Terminal, Calc... doesn't have menu
on both menu bar and title bar. It is weird that Firefox does have the
menu while the others doesn't.

Well, you'd need to build brasero from source to test it. I did so, and
if you don't know how to do that, please be patient and wait until the
fix lands in Xenial. (It may take some time.) Then, if you'd find that
it still doesn't work as expected, please let us know.

@Adolfo, that was it! For some reason gnome-settings-daemon was
uninstalled on my upgrade to 16.04, and on boot Ubuntu was complaining
about an error with it. I installed it, re-logged in and everything is
now correct.

The Unity issue is bug 1553165.
It doesn't seem immediately obvious that gnome-software should inhibit
suspend - if you use other methods to install (e.g. from the command
line) these wont stop a suspend from occurring. Downgrading priority due
to this.

Changelog information is downloaded from changelogs.ubuntu.com. These
must all be loaded before the updates tab is populated.
This is slow because:
- Changelogs are downloaded for non-GUI packages (bug 1554166)
- Changelogs are downloaded sequentially.
