[Bug 1668419] Re: out of order focus of child window u8 zesty

2017-02-27 Thread Daniel van Vugt
"couldn't really enter input into the surface at all"

That's because the About dialog is modal; meant to stay on top and never
give focus back to the app window till it's closed. You can confirm that
in Unity7.

So this is just a simple window management bug.

[Bug 1668429] Re: thunderbird fails to launch, zesty u8

Incomplete for Xmir. Running it manually from ssh launches successfully:

mirrun Xmir :1 -rootless --desktop_file_hint=unity8 & sleep 2 ; env
DISPLAY=:1 thunderbird

So it sounds like U8 or Libertine isn't launching it correctly.

[Bug 1668435] Re: gedit takes forever to reveal rh-mouse-click menu & can crash u8 zesty

2017-02-27 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Although the crash isn't directly related to the 30 second delay. I've
been seeing the same crash intermittently for years. I recall previously
trying to nail it down with alan_g without success.

Anyway, it might be helpful to make this bug about the delay, and bug
1668466 for the crash.

[Bug 1668435] Re: gedit takes forever to reveal rh-mouse-click menu & can crash u8 zesty

2017-02-27 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Confirmed both the delay and unity8 crash. Sorry, I forget how to look
up the URL of the crash report my system just sent.

The same delay bug occurs in Mir demo servers - 30 seconds between right
clicking and a menu appearing. Might be dbus-related, although the
default dbus timeout is 25 seconds.

On a couple of occasions I also found the right clicking in GTK apps
would crash mir_proving_server. That's logged as bug 1668466.

I also saw the ghost windows bug 1665286 in both servers when testing
this bug.

[Bug 1668417] [NEW] odd windowing when selecting "preferences" for calculator on u8 zesty

2017-02-27 Thread kevin gunn
Public bug reported:

this is on the Feb 27 iso of zesty, clean u8 exploration

there are several issues that occur when repro'ing:
1) open app drawer, launch the calculator app
2) click the concentric circles in upper left corner to reveal the menu
3) select "prefereces"
4) go to the "Number Format" drop down and click

result: - there's an odd transparent window covering the parent window
- there's a flicker associated with the preferences child window panel
- upon dismissing, there's a residual small transparent dark rect near the
"number format" drop down area (it will follow the child window moving)

note: selecting other drop downs will result in similar, as well the subsequent
dropdowns will occupy the dark transparent rect (seemingly not located in the
right position)

[Bug 1666676] Re: Enable tracker by default for Unity too

2017-02-27 Thread Carlos Garnacho
Hi Martin,

You're right. Tracker is not a replacement for type-ahead search,
reducing tracker to this would be far too simplistic.

Using Tracker is however a technical decision adopted by the nautilus
team, they use it in a way that doesn't even attempt to be functionally
equivalent to type-ahead search. As I see it, Ubuntu has two choices:

1) Investing time/resources in updating a patch that will get bigger and
trickier to rebase over time, with the downside of possible stability
issues ending up in the wrong bug reporting system, being ignored or not
addressed properly, and generally frustrating users.

2) Getting closer to upstream, which means accepting additional
processes to get your files indexed in the background and best-effort
latency upon filesystem changes, and getting a more versatile search in
return.

Whatever the decision is, and as far as I'm personally concerned, by all
means be my guest :)

[Bug 1668361] Re: Quieter PC with automatic Sleep State command to all HDDs

2017-02-27 Thread johnmne
** Description changed:

  * This is NOT a bug, but a feature request. *

It is known that mechanical HDDs produce a lot of noise.
I have several HDDs and mostly I use only one of them at every single moment.

The problem is that ALL HDDs are working automatically when the PC starts.
(I can hear them working even if the SATA port is disabled by the
motherboard.)
This not only wears down the HDDs, but also produces a lot of noise which
shouldn't happen because that most of them aren't being used.

It would be very helpful if Ubuntu would send a "Sleep State" command to all
mechanical HDDs upon startup.
(Sending that command to SSDs isn't required.)
+
+ ---
+
+ In addition, nautilus itself could verify upon each "unmount" action whether
all HHDs are being used.
+ If there are HDDs which aren't being used (doesn't contain mounted
partitions) - then nautilus could send a Sleep State to those mechanical HDDs.
+
+ By "unmount action", I mean to the unmounting that happens when clicking
+ on the "up" arrow in the GUI of Nautilus where all available partitions
+ are presented.

[Bug 1666676] Re: Enable tracker by default for Unity too

2017-02-27 Thread Martin Pitt
So all of this tells me that tracker isn't a replacement for typeahead
search. They have two entirely different use cases:

 * Typeahead search only affects the currently displayed directory (or
should anyway -- you search through what you see, not through the
entirety of the file system). It is fast as it's only one readdir(), and
nautilus already did that as it's displaying at least the first portion
of the directory and there is no need to stat() the individual files. It
also needs to be instant and correct even when I just copied a large
directory from somewhere else or am looking at a remote sftp/cifs
directory, and work everywhere.

 * Tracker imposes a huge cost due to always indexing everything (even
if you never search for it). It's good for tasks like "where did I put
my files last week". However, it is necessarily only approximate, as it
has some delay (which can be quite large if you are on battery, or just
copied a large bunch of files), and not universal (non-XDG directories,
remote file systems), etc.

So I don't see how "enable tracker" can ever be a replacement for
typeahead search, and TBH I still don't buy that we have to penalize
each and every installation with the tracker overhead even though most
people don't do full-hard disk searches all the time (and many don't do
this at all). And if you do need a "search through my home dir", you
*still* need to do an actual search due to the latency/approximative
nature of indexing. It's not an acceptable answer to say "sorry, we
don't show the file you just downloaded as we didn't get to indexing it
yet".

I see tracker as a nice opt-in (!) feature for people who often do full
searches, so this might become a checkbox in the search box?

[Bug 1585551] Re: gnome-settings-daemon leaking memory after idle

Running Alt + F2 and then "r" to restart GNOME Shell helps speed up

after that it still uses relatively much more RAM than after a reboot.

[Bug 1668347] [NEW] Unable to set bridge_portpriority with networkd

2017-02-27 Thread Ryan Harper
Public bug reported:

1. root@ubuntu:/run/systemd/network# lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu Zesty Zapus (development branch)
Release:17.04

2. root@ubuntu:/run/systemd/network# apt-cache policy systemd
systemd:
  Installed: 232-18ubuntu1
  Candidate: 232-18ubuntu1
  Version table:
 *** 232-18ubuntu1 500
500 http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu zesty/main amd64 Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

3. Using a networkd config like this:

# cat 10-netplan-eth1.network
[Match]
MACAddress=52:54:00:12:34:02
Name=eth1

[Network]
Bridge=br0
LinkLocalAddressing=no
IPv6AcceptRA=no

[Bridge]
Cost=50
Priority=28

% cat /sys/class/net/br0/brif/eth1/priority
28

4. % cat /sys/class/net/br0/brif/eth1/priority
32

When using ifupdown and /etc/network/interfaces to configure a bridge
users are able to specify a bridge port priority:

auto br0
iface br0 inet static
  address 192.168.1.1
  bridge_ports eth1 eth2
  bridge_portprio eth1 28
  bridge_portprio eth2 14

Which results in the bridge hook scripts running:

brctl setportprio br0 eth1 28

which is visible via:

/sys/class/net/br0/brif/eth2/priority

Note, networkd does not mention PortPriority under netdev Bridge section,
however, PathCost is mentioned. It appears networkd is missing an
implementation.

[Bug 969359] Re: [keyboard]: gnome-settings-daemon consumes 100% cpu (and blinking numlock)

2017-02-27 Thread Quentin Dufour
Just to mention that I encountered the same problem on Ubuntu 16.04 with
GNOME. I checked the permissions on ~/.cache/dconf and indeed, it was
owned by root. I've updated it as described in #170. I hope it will fix
the problem.

[Bug 1585551] Re: gnome-settings-daemon leaking memory after idle

2017-02-27 Thread Ole Jon Bjørkum
Running Valgrind as described here:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1321995

...I get the content in the attachment, not very helpful it seems? Also
see my screenshot above.

Note: It should be noted that I run a dual monitor setup with one
monitor on DVI and another on HDMI. Saw a forum post or something
suggesting that it could affect it. I don't have a way to know. But it
only happens on this computer, not on a Intel NUC running the same
distro (but not same HW) connected to my TV.

[Bug 1652499] Re: Cannot hibernate properly ; systemd-sleep hangs

2017-02-27 Thread Dimitri John Ledkov
If resume completed - e.g. there is some evidence that it was not a cold
boot, but actually previous system session did come back up somewhat -
systemd has probably finished its job.

Graphical glitches are possibly kernel drivers and/or udev/quirk
integration.

Assigning to linux for further investigation.
