[Bug 1759760] [NEW] Wayland: Out-of-memory results in unusable system.

2018-03-28 Thread PeterPall
Public bug reported:

Please re-assign this bug report as needed:

When I was using Xwindows if the system ran out of memory one of the
applications that was running was killed. Now that I am using Wayland
instead the mouse and the keyboard stop responding and using a hotkey in
order to switch to a different virtual console doesn't work any more.

My guess is that a process vital for wayland to work gets killed since
wayland isn't obviously connected to the user experience in the view of
many possible metrics.

My computer is using intel embedded graphics. But as gnome-shell
currently tends to occupy an additional megabyte per second (there is a
second but ticket on launchpad for that) and as I get the bug reports
for a mathematics program that is able to find big solutions, if needed
I frequently read "system becomes unresponsive" messages nowaday.

In the last 9 days, the problem became less common, but today it has
started again.

The situation remained the same,as I described at earlier reports.

[Bug 1756547] Re: LP refuses to import plural strings where e.g. msgstr[0] entries in PO file miss %d

2018-03-28 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
There was a long IRC discussion about this issue yesterday:

https://irclogs.ubuntu.com/2018/03/28/%23ubuntu-devel.html#t12:21

I proved to be wrong about what has been causing the import failures:
It's not the msgstr[2] entries, but the missing %d in the msgstr[0]
entries.

However, the latest gettext version allows such missing %d, while the
xenial gettext version does not, and that has been preventing these
strings from being imported.

The plan is to upgrade the xenial gettext version in LP and with that
solve the problem for both gnome-shell and other affected packages.
Hopefully that can be done in due time and proved to work. If not, we
also identified a possible workaround which would require certain
modifications of the .pot files in all affected packages.

Assigning myself to the Ubuntu Translations bug task for now to more
easily monitor the progress.

** Summary changed:

[Bug 1759251] Re: Ubuntu Single Sign-On not translated

2018-03-28 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
For test purposes I made this change:

$ diff /usr/bin/dh_translations.orig /usr/bin/dh_translations
112c112
<   @cmd=('make', $domain . '.pot');
---
>   @cmd=('make', $domain . '.pot-update');

Then I built gnome-online-accounts locally, and the .pot file was nicely
updated.

So making that change to dh_translations seems to be an alternative way
to handle this bug. Possibly it's the right way.

One doubt is whether there is a risk that other packages, whose .pot
files are created via this command, have versions of po/Makefile that
don't understand the -update suffix. Or maybe it's a standard thing
which ought to work in all cases.

Another thing is whether there are packages with externally maintained
.pot files which we don't want to overwrite this way.

For now, if we are not sure about those things, and since it's urgent to
make the strings available to the translators, I'd vote for building
gnome-online-accounts with the patch I wrote.

[Bug 1756877] Re: Input latency in 18.04

That's surprising, and is the opposite of what I would expect. Are you
saying the high power usage occurs _with) nvidia-driver-390 installed?

Anyway, back on the original "latency" problem this bug is about...

It sounds like this is actually an output latency problem, related to
the nouveau driver and possibly related to the recurring kernel

[Bug 1694454] Re: Can't open gnome terminal

2018-03-28 Thread Chris S.
dino99:

- which DE is used ? GNOME

- is it a rolling installation ? Yes

- can you confirm that issue when loging an other user ? I had to make a
new user to test this. Yes, it does work on the other user...

- try cleaning the system via deborphan and bleachbit (as root, but
carefully select options). I've been meaning to do this. Will do.

- is journalctl show useful warnings/errors ? Here are some from GNOME
Logs. I don't think they're all from journalctl.

[Bug 1694454] Re: Can't open gnome terminal

2018-03-28 Thread dino99
Users affected:

- which DE is used ?
- is it a rolling installation ?
- can you confirm that issue when loging an other user ?
- try cleaning the system via deborphan and bleachbit (as root, but carefully
select options)
- is journalctl show useful warnings/errors ?

After doing the requesting steps, and still having the issue, then
report your own bug to send real apport details; that report is outdated
and cant help devs to fix the problem as it concern an other more recent
release and possibly different config. So that one is useless and so
closed.

[Bug 1759667] [NEW] password field unusable if display configuration changes while on screen lock

2018-03-28 Thread Martin Weis
Public bug reported:

I often lose the ability to type in my password on a locked screen
(gnome3), if the display configuration changes.

Steps to reproduce:
* plug off external display
* lock screen in gnome (ctrl-alt-l)
* plug in external display

After these steps the password field cannot get focus or be used to type
password in.
Sometimes also the buttons are without function, not clickable with mouse or
reachable with keyboard shortcuts.

Plugging off the previously added display can sometimes help to recover to
responsive elements, but often the password field stays unresponsive.
A workaround is then to use the "change user" button, and logging into the
account. This usually works and circumvents a stalled gnome-screensaver.

Additionally, while testing for this bug report, I could use the desktop
(which should stay locked) for quite some time (~20 seconds), before
gnome-screensaver took over and kicked in again. This happened after
plugging off an external display and the corresponding display settings
change.

The latter could be a serious issue, related to bugs about resume reported
elsewhere, e.g.
#1509711
since a display change can be easily forced.

[Bug 1509711] Re: Screen temporarily not locked when coming out of suspend

2018-03-28 Thread Martin Weis
I experience this sometimes (currently running 16.04 LTS), you can
easily enlarge the time by:

* high load, have processes running taking 100% CPU
* a lot of used RAM
* slow I/O (hard disk)

E.g., on a netbook, I was regularly even able to type in commands on open
shells, start or close programs.
It still happens on a decent machine, but less often and with much shorter
"flashing".

[Bug 1694454] Re: Can't open gnome terminal

2018-03-28 Thread Chris S.
I can confirm this with a few apps, including gnome-terminal, nautilus,
"book", "documents", "calendar", dconf Editor, "disks", "disk usage
analyzer", and "logs", all GNOME apps.

Oddly, certain apps are just fine, like Gedit, System Monitor, and the
help menu.

[Bug 1694454] Re: Can't open gnome terminal

2018-03-28 Thread Chris S.
Running any of the above apps via command / command line with "dbus-
launch" in front works.

In my situation, the only thing that's different in my setup is the
addition of XRDP for remote desktop, which is set to log in to XFCE
instead of GNOME to allow the two sessions to continue side-by-side.
This was set in the ~/.xsession file. I changed the file back to GNOME
session to test this, but it didn't help.

[Bug 1754924] Re: gnome-control-center crashed with SIGSEGV in actualize_printers_list()

2018-03-28 Thread Jeremy Bicha
** Description changed:

- Crash occurred while editing the custom keyboard shortcuts.
+ Test Case
+ =
+ From Ubuntu 18.04, click the top right of the screen to open the system
status menu.
+ Click the gear button at the bottom to open the Settings app.
+ In the Settings app, click Devices > Printers.
+ Close the Settings app and then use the system status menu to re-open
Settings.
+ Navigate to the Printers panel.

- 4.15.0-12-generic #13-Ubuntu SMP Thu Mar 8 06:24:47 UTC 2018
+ gnome-control-center crashes

- Description:Ubuntu Bionic Beaver (development branch)

- Release:18.04
+ Other Info
+ ==
+ I can reproduce the crash in Debian Buster also.

- gnome-control-center:

- Installed: 1:3.27.92-1ubuntu1
- Candidate: 1:3.27.92-1ubuntu1
- Version table:
- *** 1:3.27.92-1ubuntu1 500
- 500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu bionic/main amd64 Packages
- 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
+ This is also reproducible by opening the Settings app from the
+ Activities Overview.
+
+ This is not reproducible by running gnome-control-center from the
+ command line.
+
+ It's also odd that running gnome-control-center will always open the
+ last opened panel (this is a GNOME 3.28 feature), but running it from
+ either the Activities Overview or from the system status menu will only
+ open the last opened panel if it is not in the Details or Devices
+ submenus.

Re: [Bug 1756006] Re: FFe: Support suspend-to-hibernate

2018-03-28 Thread Mario Limonciello
Gsd is pushing for the name change in systemd, so I'm going to get that
upstreamed before bringing this into Ubuntu. (Suspend to hibernate to
suspend then hibernate).

In terms of UI where would it Land? I figure it should be a policy setting
on systems that ship with it, but you're probably right that policy should
be viewable and changeable if someone doesn't want this.

[Bug 1759462] Re: Keyboard shortcuts not operational on 18.04

2018-03-28 Thread Dustin Krysak
Another test I just completed. In a situation where my shortcuts were
working… I put caffeine on to prevent sleep or hibernation… and my
shortcuts are still working. Granted I was not doing a lot on the
machine over this time… Used it for a bit and then went to bed. But 8
hrs later. still good. I’m going to work shortly and I might try to
leave my laptop running for my commute and then use the machine through
the day with caffeine on. See how it goes.

@seb128
What do you mean an "Ubuntu" session... under a gnome desktop session? This was
installed via the Ubuntu Budgie ISO. I have no alternate session on this
machine.

[Bug 1759537] Re: Adding a user with a preset password do not work

2018-03-28 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
@Harald: Makes sense, but it is an upstream matter. Would be great if
you could file an upstream design bug to GNOME.

Closing this bug.

[Bug 1756006] Re: FFe: Support suspend-to-hibernate

2018-03-28 Thread Iain Lane
The systemd part is OK since it's cherry-picks - +1 for uploading that.

For g-s-d I would prefer to wait for it to be more firm upstream,
especially with regard to the naming. So I vote for waiting until it's
committed there. It might be helpful/useful/necessary for that to hang
out on #control-center on gnome IRC.

You don't plan any UI changes for 18.04, right? As an aside, it seems
like there probably should be some UI for this in the future.

[Bug 1756006] Re: FFe: Support suspend-to-hibernate

2018-03-28 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
This is an important improvement, so I have no objections from a docs
and/or translators POV.

One plea, though: To the extent this introduces new or changed
translatable strings, please notify the translators on the ubuntu-
translators list once those strings have been made available for
translation.

[Bug 1691867] Re: New binary name: gnome-user-docs instead of gnome-user-guide

2018-03-28 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
This bug was fixed in the package gnome-flashback - 3.28.0-1ubuntu1

---
gnome-flashback (3.28.0-1ubuntu1) bionic; urgency=medium

  * Merge with Debian unstable, remaining changes:
- debian/rules:
+ Add an epoch number to gnome-session-flashback package.
- debian/gnome-flashback-common.gsettings-override:
+ Disable some not needed gnome-flashback components.
+ Add the default settings for GNOME Flashback sessions.
- debian/gnome-session-flashback.target:
+ The target file for systemd, based on ubuntu-session.target.
+ Install this file into /usr/lib/systemd/user/ directory.
- debian/control.in:
+ Bump gnome-session-bin dependency to 3.18.1.2-1ubuntu5, to be able
to use run-systemd-session.
  + Add dependencies on dbus-user-session, indicator-common, nautilus
and systemd.
  + Use Ubuntu VCS fields.
- debian/patches/run-systemd-session.diff:
+ Use run-systemd-session script for running the session.
- debian/patches/support-indicator-keyboard.diff:
+ Support “org.gnome.desktop.input-sources current” key, to make
indicator-keyboard working.
  * Revert removing nautilus-classic from required components.
Ubuntu 18.04 ships Nautilus 3.26, which still has desktop icons support.
  * Update suggestion: gnome-user-guide → gnome-user-docs (LP: #1691867).
