[Bug 1770315] [NEW] slow typing password

[Bug 1769857] Re: Vulkan not working if nvidia-drm.modeset=1 is set and gdm3 is used (Optimus)

2018-05-09 Thread Daniel van Vugt
OK. Sounds like there is a device (/dev/* file) that you're not getting
correct access to. And you can only get around that limitation by
running as root (which is not recommended, for security).

In this case we may find it's an nvidia driver (or installation) bug.
Although your original observation that it's a gdm problem might
actually explain this too. I don't know if it's gdm, systemd or
something else that handles the required privilege escalation to access
/dev/GRAPHICS_THINGS so am reopening the gdm task in the hope that
somebody else knows...

Sounds like Java is causing a lot of log messages, but that might not be
related to the freeze.

Please start by keeping Eclipse and any other Java apps closed for a
while. You should be able to keep native apps like Firefox and Terminal

[Bug 1769695] Re: Freeze of Surface for 2 Minutes

2018-05-09 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Also these two messages suggest pauses at a low level that could block
other things:

May 7 17:27:40 reichelt-desktop nautilus[3278]: Called "net usershare
info" but it failed: Kindprozess »net« konnte nicht ausgeführt werden
(No such file or directory)

May 9 17:41:25 reichelt-desktop kernel: [ 1033.469201] perf: interrupt
took too long (2501 > 2500), lowering kernel.perf_event_max_sample_rate
to 79750

The second one in particular suggests the kernel is getting stuck. Maybe
keep an eye on the kernel log (dmesg -w) for more information.

Also try avoiding network filesystems/mounts for a while (in case you're
using those). Any problem in the network while doing so could cause such
pauses. Although admittedly a properly designed UI should ignore such
issues, I don't think gnome-shell is there yet.

[Bug 1770238] Re: Black screen of Death after logging in Ubuntu Bionic

2018-05-09 Thread Jonathan
Tried to run the calculator app again and system crashed...

After system startup and login ended up in black screen again.

I was able to ssh into the machine and manually restart systemd-logind.
The login screen reappeared after a couple seconds and I was able to
login without being stuck in the black screen.

sudo systemctl restart systemd-logind.service

[Bug 1770238] [NEW] Black screen of Death after logging in Ubuntu Bionic

2018-05-09 Thread Jonathan
Public bug reported:

the login screen reappears and I am able to login fine. The below log seems to

[Bug 1769857] Re: Vulkan not working if nvidia-drm.modeset=1 is set and gdm3 is used (Optimus)

2018-05-09 Thread nastys
I have found out just now that if I run anything Vulkan as root (e.g.
sudo vulkan-smoketest), IT WORKS! And if I then run it without sudo, IT
STILL WORKS!

At this point I have no idea what is going on, nor why this doesn't affect
lightdm nor sddm.
It seems the affected package is indeed nvidia-graphics-drivers-390. Since it
is proprietary, I'll ask in the NVIDIA Devtalk forums.

[Bug 1769857] Re: Vulkan not working if nvidia-drm.modeset=1 is set and gdm3 is used (Optimus)

2018-05-09 Thread nastys
After some investigating, I have found that if I log out, switch to TTY then
run startx, I get the same issue. However I noticed that if I run sudo startx,
Vulkan works, and it still works after logging out and running startx as a
normal user, until the computer is rebooted. Then I tried logging in as root
from GDM and I got the same result.
Something is probably not being initialized properly when logging in as a
non-root user.
I think the affected package is actually xinit, but I'm not sure.

[Bug 1766137] Re: [regression] Password accepted but login fails (blank purple screen and mouse pointer only)

2018-05-09 Thread Tom F
Not on first login but on switch user after entering correct password I
get purple screen and mouse.

Sometimes after a long delay I can get back to the login screen. I can
usually force it back to the login screen by hitting a few random cycles
of ctl+alt + F1, ctl+alt F2 and ctl+alt + F3.

At this point, if I click on the the user that failed it shows a message
about authorization problem (but the password was correct). At login of
this user it then allows access.

I know on subsequent logins it is going to fail as soon as I see the
purple screen. If I see initial black, I know it is going to work OK.

I noticed this issue on an initial clean build on erased disks.
Concerned about my hardware, I rebuilt again from clean and the problem
is the same. I do not have a graphics card. I have: Intel® Core™
i7-4790 CPU @ 3.60GHz × 8. Ram = 24g.

[Bug 1750146] Re: Xbox (One) Wireless Controller won't connect

2018-05-09 Thread Andre Lima
I'm using this workaround as a permanent solution. (while waiting for
kernel patches for this problem)

- Install sysfsutils. (with synaptic or on terminal)
- edit this file with sudo - sudo nano /etc/sysfs.conf
- add this line at the end - /module/bluetooth/parameters/disable_ertm = 1
- reboot.

Now the controller is working without problems on Ubuntu 18.04.

On ubuntu 16.04.4 the controller start moving the mouse after the first
workaround. If it happens use this:
- On terminal type - xinput list - and copy how your system recognize the
gamepad. Generally is something
  like "Xbox Wireless Controller"
- Open a terminal and type - xinput --set-prop "Xbox Wireless Controller"
"Device Enabled" 0
- Repeat that second trick every time you got the problem.

Regards! Hope it helps.

After some testing the problem was that the ones that it did not work,
had SDDM installed too (KDE environment in those machines).

The upgrade were from 17.10 and 16.04.

Note that reistalling sddm, gdm3, lightdm, dpkg-reconfigure gdm3, none
  worked.

On gdm3 side: systemctl is-active gdm3 reports static (which might be
  the problem).

After removing sddm and rebooting, everything worked as expected.

2018-05-09 Thread Jeremy Bicha
Norbert, the upstream bug is https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-
settings-daemon/issues/46

Once that issue is fixed in GNOME, it can be fixed in the current
development release of Ubuntu and then in Ubuntu 18.04 LTS.

Comment #18 here was about something different so you can probably
ignore that.

[Bug 1769857] Re: Vulkan not working if nvidia-drm.modeset=1 is set and gdm3 is used (Optimus)

2018-05-09 Thread nastys
I know that VSync and PRIME Sync are not the same thing. With modeset
disabled, VSync IS enabled but there is tearing regardless, and I can
see that even just by dragging a window around the screen.

glxgears reports:
Running synchronized to the vertical refresh. The framerate should be
approximately the same as the monitor refresh rate.
37879 frames in 5.0 seconds = 7575.718 FPS
38056 frames in 5.0 seconds = 7611.121 FPS
[...]

There is absolutely no option in nvidia-settings to fix this. I have taken a
few screenshots:
https://imgur.com/a/EqRi1NT

Note that there are a lot more options on a desktop computer with a
PCI-E NVIDIA graphics card.

This post by an NVIDIA explains why PRIME Synchronization is critical to get
rid of tearing on Optimus laptops and why nvidia-drm modeset=1 is necessary:
https://devtalk.nvidia.com/default/topic/957814/linux/prime-and-prime-synchronization/

I quote:
"The NVIDIA driver’s PRIME Synchronization support relies on DRM-KMS, which is
disabled by default due to its current incompatibility with SLI. To enable it,
run ‘sudo rmmod nvidia-drm; sudo modprobe nvidia-drm modeset=1’. In other
words, load the nvidia-drm module with the parameter modeset=1."

Instead of reloading the module every time I need to use my laptop, I
just added that parameter to GRUB, which works but breaks Vulkan if gdm3
is used.

If I run:
$ xrandr --output eDP-1-1 --set "PRIME Synchronization" 1
without modeset enabled, the screen goes blank for a couple of seconds and
GNOME is reloaded, but I still get tearing and according to xrandr it's still
disabled:
$ xrandr --verbose
Screen 0: minimum 8 x 8, current 1920 x 1080, maximum 16384 x 16384
eDP-1-1 connected primary 1920x1080+0+0 (0x47) normal (normal left inverted
right x axis y axis) 344mm x 194mm
[...]
PRIME Synchronization: 0
supported: 0, 1
[...]

Of course, I get no tearing if modeset is enabled. I don't need to edit
my xorg.conf or anything.

Anyway the summary of this bug is "Vulkan not working if nvidia-
drm.modeset=1 is set and gdm3 is used (Optimus)", regardless of the
tearing issues.

If gdm3 is not affected then why does this ONLY happen with GDM?

Will this fixed or not in Ubuntu 18.04 LTS?

[Bug 1769857] Re: Vulkan not working if nvidia-drm.modeset=1 is set and gdm3 is used (Optimus)

2018-05-09 Thread Daniel van Vugt
"VSync" and "PRIME Sync" are unrelated things. You need to ignore the
fact that they sound similar. You should be able to achieve perfect
VSync regardless of the "modeset" option. But it may be disabled by
default (by Nvidia) as alluded to earlier.

The "NV-GLX" error sounds expected... In a Wayland session you're using
Xwayland which doesn't yet connect to the Nvidia driver properly. So
avoid Wayland sessions in your case - they're not expected to work for
this.

So I think you need to:
  1. Don't use nvidia-drm.modeset=1
  2. Only use Xorg sessions.
  3. Now if tearing is your only problem then look in nvidia-settings for
options to fix that. You might also find some xorg.conf options that help here:
http://us.download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86_64/390.25/README/xconfigoptions.html

gdm3 has nothing to do with any of this. It just launches X and the
Nvidia driver dictates what features are supported or not. If you want
the maximum features and performance from Nvidia then you usually need
to be using a Xorg session and not "modeset".

[Bug 1765141] Re: [regression] Full screen white flash from time to time (Wayland and X11)

2018-05-09 Thread Daniel van Vugt
>From what I've seen of the gnome-shell/mutter/clutter/cogl source code,
they use white as a default colour. So if you see something that's all
white it means there's meant to be a texture or image there, but for
some reason it failed to render.

That might sound obvious and meaningless but it's not :)

Can you please attach output from this command?

  lspci -k

because I think this issue will be driver-specific.

[Bug 1769857] Re: Vulkan not working if nvidia-drm.modeset=1 is set and gdm3 is used (Optimus)

2018-05-09 Thread nastys
nvidia-drm.modeset=1 is used for PRIME Sync. In a gist, it copies the
framebuffer from the dGPU to the iGPU without tearing. Without this,
VSync is not effective no matter what.

I have switched back to gdm3. In Xorg, OpenGL works as expected, with
the NVIDIA GPU (according to glxinfo), but Vulkan still doesn't work. In
Wayland, OpenGL is rendered by the Intel GPU and when I try to run
vulkan-smokeinfo I get:

Xlib: extension "NV-GLX" missing on display ":0".
terminate called after throwing an instance of 'std::runtime_error'
  what():  VkResult -3 returned

I remember Ubuntu 17.10 wouldn't let me log in at all if nvidia-drm.modeset=1
was enabled, but lightdm worked without issues (and it still does). Also SSDM
is not affected either. Somehow gdm3 doesn't like this option...

There is a fix for the left/right jittering in
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=782011

But yes those bugs should be deduplicated.

I think the bug you're referencing is about blurriness from y position
calculation.
I believe the upstream bug about left/right jittering is

[Bug 1770082] Re: set-name doesn't work on boot, only with netplan apply

2018-05-09 Thread Daniel Axtens
** Description changed:

+ === systemd issue ===
+
+ Renaming devices doesn't seem to work.
+
+ If I create /etc/systemd/network/10-network.link with:
+
+ [Match]
+ MACAddress=52:54:00:c1:c9:bb
+
+ [Link]
+ Name=myiface3
+
+ I expect this to cause the device with that MAC address to be named to
+ myiface3. However, when I reboot, I instead see:
+
+ $ ip l
+ 1: lo: mtu 65536 qdisc noqueue state UNKNOWN mode
DEFAULT group default qlen 1000
+ link/loopback 00:00:00:00:00:00 brd 00:00:00:00:00:00
+ 2: ens3: mtu 1500 qdisc noop state DOWN mode DEFAULT
group default qlen 1000
+ link/ether 52:54:00:c1:c9:bb brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff
+
+ The device is not renamed.
+
+ This link is pretty much identical to Example 2 in
+ https://www.freedesktop.org/software/systemd/man/systemd.link.html.
+
+ Oddly, while it doesn't work on reboot, it does work if you unbind the
+ device and rebind it as netplan apply does.
+
+ === Original Bug ==
+
'set-name:' doesn't change the name of a network interface on boot, it
only works when you do netplan apply.

Say I take this 50-cloud-init.yaml file:

  # This file is generated from information provided by
  # the datasource. Changes to it will not persist across an instance.
  # To disable cloud-init's network configuration capabilities, write a file
  # /etc/cloud/cloud.cfg.d/99-disable-network-config.cfg with the following:
  # network: {config: disabled}
  network:
  version: 2
  ethernets:
  ens3:
  dhcp4: true
  match:
  macaddress: 52:54:00:de:bd:f6
  set-name: ens3

Say I change set-name to 'myiface3' and reboot. I expect that the device
will be called myiface3 and brought up fine with dhcp. However, instead
  I see:

  $ ip a
1: lo: mtu 65536 qdisc noqueue state UNKNOWN group
default qlen 1000
  link/loopback 00:00:00:00:00:00 brd 00:00:00:00:00:00
  inet 127.0.0.1/8 scope host lo
     valid_lft forever preferred_lft forever
  inet6 ::1/128 scope host
     valid_lft forever preferred_lft forever
2: ens3: mtu 1500 qdisc noop state DOWN group default
qlen 1000
  link/ether 52:54:00:de:bd:f6 brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff

The name has not been changed, and the device has not been brought up.

If I run netplan apply however, I see the following:

1: lo: mtu 65536 qdisc noqueue state UNKNOWN group
default qlen 1000
  link/loopback 00:00:00:00:00:00 brd 00:00:00:00:00:00
  inet 127.0.0.1/8 scope host lo
     valid_lft forever preferred_lft forever
  inet6 ::1/128 scope host
     valid_lft forever preferred_lft forever
  3: myiface3: mtu 1500 qdisc fq_codel state
UP group default qlen 1000
  link/ether 52:54:00:de:bd:f6 brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff
inet 192.168.122.151/24 brd 192.168.122.255 scope global dynamic myiface3
     valid_lft 3575sec preferred_lft 3575sec
  inet6 fe80::5054:ff:fede:bdf6/64 scope link
     valid_lft forever preferred_lft forever

So names are successfully changed with netplan apply.

This seems to be some udev-related timing or priority issue that I'm
  still trying to hunt down.

This breaks some forms of migration in certain cloud environments.

[Bug 1629600] Re: Installed application from .deb does not appear unless Ubuntu is restarted

2018-05-09 Thread Hadrien
Ubuntu 18.04, gnome-software 3.28.1

The application now appears in the "Installed" list, but with the wrong name
and the wrong icon.
If I kill gnome-software and restart it, the application is not present anymore
in the "Installed" list.
If I do a search in gnome-software, I can find the application again, with the
right icon and with the "Installed" check tick (as it was the case for 17.10).

[Bug 1769845] Re: The Settings->Devices menu in gnome-shell Wayland doesn't provide enough configurations options, and there is no cfg file to work around it

2018-05-09 Thread i30817
** Description changed:

First, the obvious: the mouse experience out of the box (at least on
ubuntu 17.04) is bad. I thought this was because Wayland is slightly
slower on animations + mouse movement but although this is happening for
some reason (memory leak, whatever) it's mostly because the setting to
set the mouse 'Acceleration Profile' to 'adaptive' is hidden in the
gnome-tweak tool and set to default 'linear'. I highly suspect that this
setting was on by default on X11 synaptics, because my mouse experience
became equal after i turned it to adaptive when it was inferior before.

This is probably the cause of many of the mouse complaints on the ubuntu
  upgrade.
-
- Another problem. Previously, on Xorg and synaptics i could use the right
- border area of my touchpad to simulate a middle mouse button click (that
- button doesn't exist on my keypad that has a structure like this:
-
- (imagine # is non-breaking spaces here because i sure can't make them work
here)
- ---
- |###|#|
- |###|#|
- |###|#|
- |###|#|
- |###|#|
- |###|#|
- |###|#|
- ---
- |##|##|
- ---
-
- (i have a acer aspire 5738 if you want to see images on google)
-
- The bottom are the left and right mouse buttons, the right column was
- for scrolling (another bug: doesn't actually work on nautilus at the
- moment but works on Firefox).
-
- Previously taps on that scroll area could open firefox links, open tabs
- in nautilus etc, as per 3rd mouse button. Now that whole area only does
- scrolling and i have to try the lottery of trying the 'three finger
- tap' on the central are to simulate mouse click (this doesn't work 80%
- of the time, and the other 15% is right clicking, that's two fingers.
- Even if it works, 3 fingers probably meanwhile moved the cursor when i
- lifted or tapped). I'd *really really* like it if i could configure
- those areas somehow, either graphically or on a config file.
-
- Meanwhile i'm using ctrl+tap or ctrl+click but that requires two hands.
