[Bug 1790478] Re: gdm3 in cosmic fails to start fully in autopkgtest

2018-09-03 Thread  Christian Ehrhardt 
...ubuntu7 completed tonight thanks!
I tested 2 times from proposed in the local tester and working as expected now.

[Bug 1790563] [NEW] Many JsonArray critical warnings on command line

2018-09-03 Thread Robert Ancell
Public bug reported:

[Impact]
Running GNOME Software gives many JsonArray warnings on the command line:
Json-CRITICAL **: json_object_get_array_member: assertion 'node != NULL' failed
Json-CRITICAL **: json_array_get_length: assertion 'array != NULL' failed
This is due to the code not handling there being no plugs defined in the
interface table (which is valid when it is empty).

[Test Case]
1. Run GNOME Software from the command line
$ killall gnome-software
$ gnome-software

Expected result:
No JsonArray critical warnings are show.

Observed result:
Many JsonArray critical warnings are show.

[Regression Potential]
Risk of additional checks breaking expected behaviour.

the snap).
+ 5. Uninstall GNOME Sudoku.

+ [Regression Potential]
+ This requires a fix to PackageKit which used to autoremove all packages (too
aggressive), not just the ones related to the current transaction. A bug in the
code could cause more packages to be removed than is suitable. GNOME Software
previously didn't use this autoremove functionality, so by enabling it we could
trigger a problem in either the existing code or the new fix.

[Bug 1790541] [NEW] "Laptop crashed while installing update" package gnome-menus 3.13.3-11ubuntu1.1 failed to install/upgrade: triggers looping, abandoned

2018-09-03 Thread Daniel Scholz
Public bug reported:

My laptop crashed while installing updates and now my desktop screen looks
different
and the sidebar is gone. I can run stuff on my desktop but only by right
clicking and when I
exit one of the programs it just crashes and freezes my system.

I've gone into safe boot mode but don't really know what to run. I got into the
root menu and tried running dpkg but it says "failed to fetch" and then starts
"restoring original system state".

Nothing seems to help out. I'm desperate here I don't want to do a fresh
install and lose everything.

[Bug 1790384] Re: Unable to return from lock screen

2018-09-03 Thread Ammon Wright
I did some research on the error. It looks like I am out of user-
watches. I have cloud backup software, and with 3TB of images, that's a
lot of stuff to watch, to know if it needs backing up. I had
fs.inotify.max_user_watches set to 262144 prior to the Ubuntu upgrade,
but it was removed as part of the upgrade. I've put back the setting,
and I'm uninstalling my backup software, since it is no longer supports
this large of a disk, as of a couple of weeks ago. If you know of a
cloud backup service that supports 4TB disks on Ubuntu at a reasonable
price, I'd love to hear about it. :) I'm going to attempt to reproduce
the problem after I reboot, but I suspect this will resolve it.

[Bug 1790384] Re: Unable to return from lock screen

2018-09-03 Thread Ammon Wright
I have 944.6GB of space free on sda3 out of 4.0TB (my wife takes a lot
of pictures). Also: sr0 is a BlueRay reader, sda1 is boot, sda2 is
swap. sdbx is a disk that I wanted to use for RAID, but I've never got
working correctly, and it is not mounted. There are no other storage
devices (aside from a bunch of /dev/loopx devices, which are 'full' of
course). The sda3 disk is btrfs, if that helps.

I don't understand what the "No space left on device" messages might
mean, but I have a lot of space free, at least on sda3.

I have the same issue on 16.04. Using Online Accounts to add my Google

(options only for files & photos). The Gnome Calendar is empty.

[Bug 1789577] Re: An Unresponsive Window Freezes the Whole Desktop

** Description changed:

  https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-shell/issues/273
  https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=786114

  ---

  When debugging UI Applications, this application becomes naturally
  unresponsive when reaching an execution breakpoint. As a consequence, I
- see the "Force Quit or Wait" dialog, which freezes the whole desktop. I
- have no idea why that is, but it is super annoying.
+ see the "Force Quit or Wait" dialog, which freezes the whole desktop.

- And this is of course not only the case when debugging, but happens as well
for a "normal" application freeze. Why does a frozen application should
immediately require my attention, no matter what else I am doing? Why does this
require my whole desktop to freeze and wait for my input?
- Sometimes I just notice a desktop freeze and dont know whats going on until I
find this stupid "Quit or Wait" dialog. Super annoying.
- Please make this window not freeze everything else, nothing is so important
that the whole desktop should freeze to force input.

[Bug 1697692] Re: package libpoppler-qt5-1:amd64 0.41.0-0ubuntu1.1 failed to install/upgrade: package is in a very bad inconsistent state; you should reinstall it before attempting a removal

I tried to install Qpdfview, but failed with the error message

Now I can't either install libpoppler-qt5, or un-install qpdfview from Synaptic.
The inconsistency needs urgent attention, I think.

[Bug 1790478] Re: gdm3 in cosmic fails to start fully in autopkgtest

2018-09-03 Thread  Christian Ehrhardt 
I just found that further calls to
  $ sudo systemctl restart gdm

Seem to alternate between good/bad state.

Here is the log of one such bad restarts:
http://paste.ubuntu.com/p/Dx7Sk3wDyx/

OTOH, the service could just in general not be restarable - so take this
with a grain of salt

[Bug 1790478] Re: gdm3 in cosmic fails to start fully in autopkgtest

2018-09-03 Thread  Christian Ehrhardt 
I have found this to be locally reproducible with:
$ autopkgtest --shell-fail --apt-upgrade --no-built-binaries
--testname=boot-and-services
--apt-pocket=proposed=src:systemd,src:dbus,src:iproute2,src:glibc
systemd_239-7ubuntu6.dsc -- qemu --qemu-options='-cpu host'
--qemu-command=qemu-system-i386 --cpus 8 --ram-size=4096
~/autopkgtest-cosmic-i386.img

What I see is that it really is failing.
There are plenty of crashes in journal but those seem to be a swarm of red
herring.

The first start of gdm ends with X11 initializing and giving up like:
/usr/lib/gdm3/gdm-x-session[pid]: dbus-daemon[1112]: [session uid=119 pid=1112]
Activating service name='org.freedesktop.systemd1' requested by ':1.0' (uid=119
pid=1053 comm="/usr/lib/gdm3/gdm-x-session gnome-session --autost"
label="unconfined")
/usr/lib/gdm3/gdm-x-session[pid]: dbus-daemon[1112]: [session uid=119 pid=1112]
Activated service 'org.freedesktop.systemd1' failed: Process
org.freedesktop.systemd1 exited with status 1
/usr/lib/gdm3/gdm-x-session[pid]: Unable to register display with display
manager

But if you log in later and run "systemctl restart gdm" then all initializes as
it is supposed to.
It seems something yet unknown isn't available at early boot.

I compared the X11 init of good/bad case but there is no difference
(e.g. in detected HW), the first things that fails/differs is the
org.freedesktop.systemd1 activation.

But the boot start of gdm seems to be really (too early?) as halfway through I
see:
  "Reached target Basic System"

[Bug 1790478] [NEW] gdm3 in cosmic fails to start fully in autopkgtest

2018-09-03 Thread Dimitri John Ledkov
Public bug reported:

In systemd package for a while, there is a boot-and-services test case,
which tries to install common/typical things and ensure they continue to
operate with new systemd.

One of the test cases is gdm3. The test case dependencies are:

Tests: boot-and-services
Depends: systemd-sysv,
  systemd,
  udev,
  systemd-container,
  systemd-coredump,
  libpam-systemd,
  xserver-xorg-video-dummy,
  xserver-xorg,
  gdm3 [!s390x],
  cron,
  network-manager,
  busybox-static,
  apparmor,
  pkg-config,
  python3

The test does following:
out = subprocess.check_output(['ps', 'u', '-C', 'gdm-x-session'])

self.assertIn(b'gdm-x-session gnome-session', out)

out = subprocess.check_output(['ps', 'u', '-C', 'Xorg'])

self.assertIn(b'Xorg vt1', out)

self.active_unit('gdm')

However, this now errors out upon the first command, meaning gdm-x-session is
not running anymore.
On bionic, this test case continues to operate correctly in the autopkgtest
cloud.

Thus it looks like there is a regression or a change of behavior of gdm3
in the cloud in cosmic; since bionic continues to work correctly.

I will mark this test as an expected failure for now, and monitor it
separately, as currently, this is blocking many migrations.
