[Bug 1901150] Re: No "Are you sure?" question when deleting something from Desktop

2020-10-26 Thread Adam Dingle
Adam Niedling: That's a long story. Very briefly, about 2 years ago the
GNOME project, which develops Nautilus, decided to remove support for
desktop icons from Nautilus, controversially:

  https://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2018/01/gnome-desktop-icons-removed-3-28

Ubuntu still wants desktop icons, so it needs to implement them in some
other way, and so it uses the Desktop Icons shell extension.

As Paddy mentioned above, there is a newer version of Desktop Icons
called Desktop Icons NG, which is under active development:

  https://gitlab.com/rastersoft/desktop-icons-ng

I myself run Desktop Icons NG too. It is still a long way from having
all the functionality of Nautilus, but it is slowly getting better.

I also hope that Ubuntu will switch to Desktop Icons NG sooner or later.

[Bug 1901150] Re: No "Are you sure?" question when deleting something from Desktop

2020-10-23 Thread Adam Dingle
Note that Nautilus does not ask "Are you sure?" when you delete a file.
Instead, it deletes the file immediately, and displays a notification
saying that the file was deleted, along with an Undo button.

So if the goal is for the desktop to behave like Nautilus, then the
desktop should not ask "Are you sure?" either.

wrote

[Bug 1879968] Re: copy/paste still sometimes fails in LibreOffice on mutter 3.36.2

2020-07-04 Thread Adam Dingle
As some of you have noticed, the status for "Mutter" at the top of this
page changed to "Fix Released". That's because a change was just
committed to the Mutter GNOME project that apparently fixes the
underlying bug:

https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/mutter/-/commit/2f1f47d25708cf444e4d35045486fa2841ce0d69

This change is not present in Mutter 3.36.3 or in any other release of
Mutter. It should be included in the next Mutter release (presumably
3.36.4).

So it is not yet available in Ubuntu, which is why the status for
"Mutter (Ubuntu)" at the top of the page is still "Confirmed".

In other words, a fix is now in Mutter (which is great news), and
hopefully it will make its way to Ubuntu before long. But it's not
there yet.

By the way this bug, like the previous copy/paste issues, is specific to

[Bug 1879968] Re: copy/paste still sometimes fails in LibreOffice on mutter 3.36.2

2020-05-21 Thread Adam Dingle
Davide, that's a very interesting discovery that every other copy/paste
fails when you use the menu caommands. I see that on my machine too.
Hopefully that will make it easier to debug the problem, since it is a
much more direct way to reproduce the problematic behavior.

(On the other hand, there is no guarantee that this copy/paste failure
with menu commands is actually the same bug as the occasional copy/paste
failures when you use keyboard shortcuts, since the observed behavior is
pretty different.)

2020-05-21 Thread Adam Dingle
It's nice to see that the mutter fix has landed in focal-updates.

Above, Daniel wrote "Let's try to release this fix and then the first
person still having problems after it's released can open a new bug."
OK - I am that person. I have the new Mutter package, and I can still
easily reproduce the problem. I just opened two LibreOffice Writer
windows side by side and tried repeatedly copying in the left window and
pasting in the right window, and occasionally the paste visibly fails to
paste the text I just copied.

So I have opened a new bug, namely bug #1879968. If other people
experience copy/paste trouble even after they receive the mutter fix,
just like I have, then that bug is the right place for further
discussion.

[Bug 1879968] Re: copy/paste still sometimes fails in LibreOffice on Ubuntu 20.04

2020-05-21 Thread Adam Dingle
** Description changed:

In Ubuntu 19.10 and 20.04 there was a bug that caused copy and paste
operations to fail pretty often: the text that was pasted was not the
text that was just copied. See the long discussion at bug #1852183.
The bug was recently marked closed, since the package mutter -
3.36.2-1ubuntu1~20.04.1 landed in focal-updates and makes the bug occur
  much less frequently.

Unfortunately the bug still exists, and is not difficult to reproduce.
I am running Ubuntu 20.04 and have the new 3.36.2-1ubuntu1~20.04.1
- version of mutter. I just opened two LibreOffice Write windows side by
+ version of mutter. I just opened two LibreOffice Writer windows side by
side, and repeatedly selected some text in the left window, copied it,
then attempted to paste it into the right window. In my experiment,
approximately 1 in every 20 paste operations failed: it did not paste
the text that was just copied, but instead the text that was copied
  before that.

Now, an error rate of 1 in 20 may not seem so bad. On the other hand,
if you spend all day writing a document and copy and paste dozens of
times during the day, then you may hit this bug multiple times per day
(as I have been recently), which is a significant annoyance.

I tested in LibreOffice since that is where I have seen the bug most
often, but I have also seen it occur in other applications as well.

2020-05-17 Thread Adam Dingle
Once again I am the original reporter - Daniel recently asked for my
opinion about whether this bug has been fixed.

I have now been running with the proposed 3.36.2-1ubuntu1~20.04.1
package for three days, during which I have done a fair amount of
editing with copying and pasting. During that time I saw this
copy/paste bug occur twice: once on 5/16 when I couldn't copy and paste
from Epiphany (a web browser) to gedit, and once on 5/17 when I couldn't
copy and paste from a LibreOffice Writer window into another LibreOffice
Writer window.

My opinion is that the proposed fix is a definite improvement, because I
am sure that without it I would have seen more copy/paste failures these
last few days. However I believe that the bug is still not completely
fixed.

Hi Daniel - I'm the one who first reported this Launchpad bug back in
November. :) I'm very happy to see that there is a proposed fix, since
I (like many others) have continued to experience this bug on a daily
basis for many months now. I appreciate your asking my opinion, though
it certainly should not be the only one that counts here.

I am running Focal (20.04) and I just installed the proposed
3.36.2-1ubuntu1~20.04.1 package. I'll need to run with it for a day or
two before I'll have an opinion about whether the fix is adequate. Keep
fingers crossed. :)

This bug still exists in Ubuntu 20.04. It's particularly insidious
because it's easy to delete a file by mistake: if a Nautilus window has
focus and you click on a desktop icon and press the Delete key, then
Nautilus will delete the file (which you might or might not notice).

[Bug 1852183] Re: [X11] copy/paste (clipboard) is broken in Ubuntu 19.10

2019-12-12 Thread Adam Dingle
I think that the upstream bug

https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/mutter/issues/878

may not be the same issue.

This bug has "X11" in the title, and so it really refers to behavior
under X11. On Ubuntu 19.10, if I run an X11 session then
copying/pasting fails very often, especially in LibreOffice. For this
reason I switched to Wayland several weeks ago. Under Wayland,
copying/pasting still fails occasionally, but far less often. I saw
copy/paste failures dozens of times per day under X11, and now they
happen maybe once or twice per day in Wayland (with intensive use of
LibreOffice in both cases).

In a comment in the mutter bug linked above, Carlos Garnacho wrote

This is wayland specific.

So it is unclear to me that the patches linked there (which are to both
GTK and mutter) will fix the problem in X11. Has anyone tried to
reproduce this copy/paste problem after applying these patches under
X11?

@marcustomlinson, when copying/pasting from Geany into Geary, I didn't
get an image. I believe I got the wrong text. But unfortunately I
don't remember precisely.

I have seen this bug zillions of times in LibreOffice Writer, typically
when copying in one window and pasting in another, and only a few times
in other apps.

Thanks for your research determining that this is related to X11. That
gives us a possible workaround: log into a Wayland session instead.

[Bug 1852183] Re: copy/paste (clipboard) is broken in LibreOffice on Ubuntu 19.10

2019-11-12 Thread Adam Dingle
I now believe this problem is not specific to LibreOffice. I see it
there often since I use LibreOffice Writer a lot, but it just happened
again when I cut some text in Geany (a text editor) and attempted to
paste it into the email program Geary. So I think this is a general
clipboard problem in Ubuntu 19.10.

Given that, I will change the bug's title to remove the word
"LibreOffice", and remove it from the libreoffice project.

** Summary changed:

- copy/paste (clipboard) is broken in LibreOffice on Ubuntu 19.10
+ copy/paste (clipboard) is broken in Ubuntu 19.10

This bug is still a major annoyance. It would be really nice to solve

GNOME has recently removed the desktop code from Nautilus, so it seems
very unlikely that this will be solved upstream. So presumably someone

[Bug 1691112] Re: gnome-calendar doesn't see Google calendar from Ubuntu Online Accounts

2018-01-06 Thread Adam Dingle
This is no longer an issue in 17.10 since Ubuntu Online Accounts has
been replaced. Can we close this bug?

[Bug 1704765] Re: can't drag file from desktop to folder window on Artful

JLuc, I don't see that option on Ubuntu 17.10. The only Experimental
option in the Nautilus preferences is "Use the new views", which I have
unchecked (as is the default), and this bug still occurs.

2017-12-07 Thread Adam Dingle
I still run into this bug all the time, and look forward to a fix.

In the meantime, here's how to recover without logging out:

1. Open a terminal window.
2. Run 'pkill nautilus'.
3. Run 'nautilus-desktop &'.

[Bug 1704753] [NEW] Ubuntu 17.10 uses 24-hour time by default even in US locale

[Bug 1641740] [NEW] gnome-calendar needs an Ubuntu-style title bar

2016-11-14 Thread Adam Dingle
Public bug reported:

On both 16.10 (Yakkety) and 17.04 (Zesty), gnome-calendar has no Ubuntu-
style title bar displaying the name of the program. So it looks
inconsistent with other applications on the Ubuntu desktop. What's
more, if I set the option "Show the menus for a window" to "In the
window's title bar" in the Appearance control panel, then the top-level
menu in gnome-calendar is no longer available at all.

Since gnome-calendar is in main, it should be patched to have an Ubuntu
title bar, just like other GNOME applications.

[Bug 1451180] [NEW] Open in Terminal doesn't appear in top-level menus

2015-05-03 Thread Adam Dingle
Public bug reported:

In Nautilus 3.14 as it comes from GNOME, the Open in Terminal command
(provided by the gnome-terminal package) is available in the gear menu
on the right side of the toolbar. (It's also available from the context
menu when you right click in an empty area of the list or icon view, but
if many files are displayed there is no empty area to click, so I think
it's essential to have it available in a top-level menu as well.)

With Ubuntu's patches to Nautilus, the gear menu is gone and most gear
menu commands move to top-level menus such as File, Edit and so on.
Unfortunately Open in Terminal doesn't appear there, so there's no way I
can access it when there is no empty space to click in the list or icon
view.

(Note that there is a similar bug in GNOME: see
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=744161 . I think that's a
separate issue, however. I believe the bug I'm reporting here is caused
by Ubuntu's patches to Nautilus 3.14, whereas the GNOME bug was caused
by porting to GAction in Nautilus 3.16.)

[Bug 189774] Re: seahorse shows passwords without verification

2015-01-05 Thread Adam Dingle
GNOME is probably not going to fix this - it's not just the GNOME Way.
I'd like to see Ubuntu address this, though. Today, if I walk up to any
Ubuntu user's unlocked computer I can see any of their passwords in just
a few keystrokes: Super + P + A + S + Enter starts Seahorse, then I can
double click any password I want and click Show Password. From the
comments above, I can see I'm not alone in being wary of this.

Ubuntu, would you take a patch to require the user to enter their login
password to use the Show Password feature?

Daniel, I believe you should now be awarded the Bountysource bounty for

expect to hear back soon. In any case I expect we can resolve this with

[Bug 1164016] Re: restore type-ahead find

2013-12-22 Thread Adam Dingle
Daniel, thanks for your heroic efforts to reproduce the issue I
described. I just followed your list of steps above with a fresh
install of 14.04, fully updated. And I still see the bug!

To be clear, after your steps above:

9) Open a Nautilus window on your home directory.
10) Click the list view icon.
11) With the mouse, click on the Desktop directory (the first item in the list).
12) Type t. The Templates directory will be selected.
13) Press Escape. Templates will still be selected.
14) Press the down arrow key. Documents (the second item in the list) will now
be selected. This is unexpected: Videos should be selected at this time.
15) Type 't' again. Templates will be selected again, but a pale orange
rectangle (i.e. the secondary selection) will still be visible around
Documents, which is unexpected.
16) Press Escape again. The secondary selection rectangle will still be
visible.
17) Press the down arrow again. Now Downloads will be selected, but Videos
should be.

What happens if you follow these steps?

[Bug 1263495] [NEW] rerunning Epiphany 3.10 opens two windows

2013-12-22 Thread Adam Dingle
Public bug reported:

I'm running Trusty with Epiphany 3.10.3, which just landed there.

To see the problem:
1. Launch Epiphany.
2. Exit Epiphany.
3. Launch Epiphany again. Two Epiphany windows will appear. (Usually both are
full size, but sometimes one of them is tiny.)

Actually when you exit Epiphany in step 2 the Epiphany process remains
running in the background. If you kill this process before step 3 then
only one window appears.

I see the same problem if I build Epiphany 3.10.3 from source without
any Ubuntu patches. The problem is no longer present in Epiphany 3.11
in git master, because the Epiphany developers made a change there so
that Epiphany exits immediately: see

https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=711409
https://git.gnome.org/browse/epiphany/commit/?id=78e8d7f045396cd753a73f9106e19b3bb3fe5d57

But that change was non-trivial, so it seems unlikely that the GNOME
developers will backport it to the 3.10 branch.

[Bug 1227440] Re: Nautilus' Format option doesn't actually work

2013-12-22 Thread Adam Dingle
This is still broken in Trusty.

Nautilus is invoking gnome-disks like this:

gnome-disks --block-device /dev/sdb1 --format-device --xid 39846040

I believe the problem is actually in gnome-disks, not Nautilus. When I
launch gnome-disks directly and attempt to format either a single
partition of a USB stick or the whole drive, the format does nothing and
I see an error message like this:

Error formatting disk
Error synchronizing after initial wipe: Timed out waiting for object

[Bug 1263536] [NEW] title bar and address bar have starkly contrasting colors in Epiphany 3.10

2013-12-22 Thread Adam Dingle
Public bug reported:

I'm attaching screenshots of Epiphany 3.8.2 and Epiphany 3.10.3 (which
just landed in Trusty) with the default Ambiance theme. In Epiphany
3.8, the title bar and address bar have the same color, which sets them
nicely apart from content on web pages (which most often have a light
background). In Epiphany 3.10, the title bar is dark but the address
bar is light, which makes it blend into the content on some Web pages
(as in the attached screenshot). This doesn't look so great.

[Bug 1164016] Re: restore type-ahead find

2013-12-21 Thread Adam Dingle
Daniel, thanks for your continued work on this. I tried your branch and
this seems like a step forward: most of the issues I mentioned above are
fixed. I'm still seeing this issue from before, though:

- Select the first file in a directory, press the down arrow once, then
type the first character of a filename. Notice that a secondary
selection rectangle remains around the previously selected file. If you
press Escape to exit the search, the secondary selection remains, and if
you then press the down arrow Nautilus navigates to the file following
it. Instead, as soon as the search begins the secondary selection should
vanish, just like in Nautilus 3.4.

Actually it seems a bit better than last time around: the first time I
type a filename in a given directory view, usually I don't see the
secondary selection and the arrow keys behave as expected. But if you
repeat the steps above over and over in the same directory view, you'll
see that the secondary selection often appears, and arrow keys after
Escape often navigate up or down from the secondary selection position,
not from the filename you just navigated to. Do you see this too? Is
this fixable?

[Bug 1164016] Re: restore type-ahead find

2013-12-07 Thread Adam Dingle
@Daniel: Thanks for the additional hints. Actually I found an easier
way to build from your branch:

$ dh_autoreconf
$ ./configure --disable-tracker
$ make

That avoids the zeitgeist.h and gtk-doc errors, and allows me to simply
'make install' without having to generate a Debian package.

So great - I was able to try out your changes. This looks quite
promising. A few issues:

- It looks like you branched from lp:ubuntu/saucy/nautilus, but I think
you should branch from the newer lp:ubuntu/trusty/nautilus:

  https://code.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-branches/ubuntu/trusty/nautilus/trusty

- Type a few characters of a filename, then click on a different file. The
text box with the characters you typed remains open. Instead, it should
vanish, just like in Nautilus 3.4.

- Type a few characters of a filename, then move the Nautilus window.
The text box with the characters you typed remains open, and will not
move with the window. Instead, it should vanish in this situation, just
like in Nautilus 3.4.

- Select the first file in a directory, press the down arrow once, then
type the first character of a filename. Notice that a secondary
selection rectangle remains around the previously selected file. If you
press Escape to exit the search, the secondary selection remains, and if
you then press the down arrow Nautilus navigates to the file following
it. Instead, as soon as the search begins the secondary selection
should vanish, just like in Nautilus 3.4.

- When I select any file or directory in Nautilus, a yellow tooltip-like
rectangle appears in the lower right of the window with text descibing
my selection, such as

  scout.png selected (969.6 kB)

With your changes, the characters you type appear in a text box on top of
this rectangle, which doesn't look great. In Nautilus 3.4, this text box
appeared just below the Nautilus window when possible, which looked better.

[Bug 1164016] Re: restore type-ahead find

2013-11-11 Thread Adam Dingle
To be clear, the term fork usually refers to a split in development
that no longer merges in changes from the other side, which is not what
I'm proposing here. Instead, I'm hoping that if we had a patch to
restore type-ahead find, Ubuntu would include and maintain it just as it
already maintains various patches for other GNOME programs. The patch
might not be trivial, but maybe it wouldn't be that hard to maintain
once it's been written once.

Of course, I don't work for Ubuntu, so only they can say whether they
would actually accept a patch like this. But in comment #22 above,
Sebastien (who works for Canonical) wrote for the record we do agree
that this bug is annoying and would like to fix, we just need to deal
with what we have. Given that, I'm hopeful that they would take a
patch.

What version of Ubuntu and Nautilus are you using? I think this bug no
longer applies, since the current Nautilus (version 3.8.2 in Ubuntu

[Bug 1057019] Re: No format option for devices in Nautilus

2013-09-08 Thread Adam Dingle
I think this bug no longer applies to the current version of Nautilus
(3.8.2 in Ubuntu 13.10). In that version, the Computer page lists files
in the root directory of my hard drive. Devices are shown only in the
sidebar. If I right click a device there, there is a Format... option
in the context menu.

I recommend marking this bug invalid.

[Bug 1222446] [NEW] Format... does nothing

2013-09-08 Thread Adam Dingle
Public bug reported:

I'm running Nautilus 3.8.2 on Ubuntu 13.10

To see the problem:

1. Insert a removable drive such as a USB flash drive. It will appear in the
Nautilus sidebar.
2. Right click the drive and choose Format...
3. Nothing happens.

If you run Nautilus from a terminal, then you'll see this message as
this problem occurs:

2013-09-08 Thread Adam Dingle
I'm running gnome-disk-utility 3.6.1 on Ubuntu 13.10.

I see this same error whenever I try to format any USB drive at all.
Perhaps all of my USB drives already have partition tables. In any
case, the format command should be able to format any disk, no matter
what is on it already.

** Summary changed:

- Cannot format disk with new partition table

[Bug 1164016] Re: restore type-ahead find

2013-07-29 Thread Adam Dingle
Dr. Osman, thanks for your patch. A few comments:

1. Of course, this patch does not restore type-ahead find as originally
requested in this bug ticket. Instead, it simply disables recursive
searching, so that as you type only files in the current directory are
returned. Still, this does significantly ease the pain of this upstream
change. If Ubuntu can't summon the resources to restore type-ahead find
in 13.10, I would recommend landing this patch since it's ultra-simple
and does make things less painful. I'd further recommend modifying the
patch so that non-recursive search is the default (as it stands, the
user must set a GSettings key to disable recursive search, and few users
will figure out how to do that). The GSettings key would then let users
*enable* recursive search if they really want to. I suspect that few
users will.

2. You really should be patching Nautilus 3.8.2, which is the current
version of Nautilus in Ubuntu 13.10, where this is most likely to land.
(I wouldn't mind seeing this backported to 13.04 either, though.)

3. In the patch, I believe you could simplify this code:

if (g_settings_get_boolean (nautilus_preferences,
NAUTILUS_PREFERENCES_ENABLE_RECURSIVE_SEARCH)) {
g_object_set (simple_provider, recursive, TRUE, NULL);}
else
{
g_object_set (simple_provider, recursive, FALSE, NULL);
}

to:

gboolean recursive = g_settings_get_boolean (nautilus_preferences,
NAUTILUS_PREFERENCES_ENABLE_RECURSIVE_SEARCH));
g_object_set(simple_provider, recursive, recursive, NULL);

Fewer lines are better. :)

[Bug 1164016] Re: restore type-ahead find

2013-07-10 Thread Adam Dingle
Sebastien, thanks for your comment - it's nice to know that someone at
Ubuntu is paying attention to this thread.

I don't think forking an old version of Nautilus is practical. The
problem is that it would be a ton of work to keep such a fork compatible
with new versions of GTK, GLib and other libraries. Instead I think the
current version of Nautilus (3.8 in Saucy) should be patched to fix
this.

Removing type-ahead find has been controversial upstream (i.e. at GNOME)
- see, for example, the discussions at

https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=680118
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=699087

Nevertheless I think it's very unlikely that the GNOME developers will
fix this for 3.10, or possibly ever. Even if they were to fix this in,
say, Nautilus 3.12 next spring, that version won't appear in Ubuntu
until late 2014 (since Ubuntu lags GNOME by a release cycle). So if
this going to be fixed in Ubuntu in the near future, I think Ubuntu will
need to take responsibility for doing that. You may not like that -
sure, in an ideal world this would be discussed rationally and fixed
upstream - but this is how it is.

You wrote not sure that's a problem that can easily by fixed by
Ubuntu. I guess that depends on what you mean by easily. I'm quite
confident that a competent hacker could come up with a patch to the
current Nautilus that restores type-ahead find in, say, 2-3 weeks. It
might even be easier. I'd start by attempting to git revert the commit
where this breakage was introduced:

https://git.gnome.org/browse/nautilus/commit/?id=469eb89117e199a450aec3411183ed2e9f10f893

That will yield merge conflicts, which must be studied and resolved in
some nice way. This might not be solvable in a day, but I'd be very
surprised if this took more than a month of work.

To those of us on the outside, it's baffling that Ubuntu would not want
to invest that amount of effort to solve this, since this is a highly
visible core program on the Ubuntu desktop and it seems pretty evident
that the majority of users are harmed by this. Has someone at Ubuntu
already spent several weeks working on this and concluded it was too
difficult? Or does Ubuntu not feel it would be worth that amount of
effort?

[Bug 1164016] Re: restore type-ahead find

2013-07-10 Thread Adam Dingle
Sebastien, thanks for your reply. Given your staffing level I can see
why this is not as easy as it might seem.

According to this page Canonical has over 500 employees:

http://www.canonical.com/about-canonical

If only 10 of them are assigned to desktop maintenance, I would say that
team is seriously understaffed. But that's probably a discussion for
another forum, not this bug thread. :)

[Bug 1018718] Re: columns width redrawn by multiple events

2013-06-18 Thread Adam Dingle
I see this too with Nautilus 3.6.3 in Saucy. I can reliably reproduce
this bug like this:

1. Start Nautilus.
2. Go to the /etc folder in list view. On a typical machine this directory
will have a few hundred files.
3. Make sure you're displaying the default set of columns (Name, Size, Type,
Modified).
4. Now move the window, or resize it, or right click on any file to open a
context menu. The columns will jump around.

I originally filed this upstream at
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=698970, but then I realized I
could reproduce this only in Ambiance, not Adwaita. So I believe this
problem is theme-related.

[Bug 1190097] [NEW] Nautilus tries but fails to auto-install applications needed to open files of a given type

2013-06-11 Thread Adam Dingle
Public bug reported:

I'm running Nautilus 3.6.3 on Ubuntu 13.10 (Saucy).

When I double click a file in Nautilus and there is no application
installed which can open the file, Nautilus will try to auto-install an
application but the auto-install hangs. Specifically, for example:

1. Make sure that Gnumeric is not installed on your system.
2. Create a file with extension .gnumeric and double click it in Nautlius.

Nautilus will report:

  Could not display finance.gnumeric.
There is no application installed for Gnumeric spreadsheet files.
Do you want to search for an application to open this file?

Click Yes. You'll now see a dialog that looks like this:

Searching for suitable software to open files
Files requires to install [sic] software to open files of the following file
type: Gnumeric spreadsheet

The dialog has a progress bar, which will briefly pulse and then stop.
You can now only press Cancel.

A glance at the code shows that Nautilus is trying to send a DBus
message to PackageKit to perform the install. There are apparently some
PackageKit components on my system (e.g. libpackagekit-glib2-14 is
installed), but something is not working.

[Bug 1187203] [NEW] can't set Epiphany as default browser

Public bug reported:

I'm running Ubuntu 13.10 (Saucy), which has Epiphany 3.6.1. I have
Epiphany installed on my system and I'd like to set it as default, but
it doesn't show up in the list of browsers to choose from in System
Settings-Details-Default Applications-Web.

The problem is that /usr/share/applications/epiphany.desktop does not
include 'x-scheme-handler/http' in its MimeType list. This MIME type
must appear there in order for the control center to recognize this as a
Web browser. Note that 'x-scheme-handler/http' *does* appear in
epiphany.desktop.in.in in the Epiphany 3.6.1 sources (see

[Bug 1186633] [NEW] gedit find box background should turn red when text is not found

2013-06-01 Thread Adam Dingle
Public bug reported:

In gedit 3.8.2 in vanilla GNOME with Adwaita, the find box's background
turns red when text is not found. This doesn't happen in Ubuntu with
Ambiance. We probably need to add styling information to Ambiance to
make this happen.

[Bug 1136644] Re: gedit search function is not practical anymore

2013-06-01 Thread Adam Dingle
As described in the gedit help at https://help.gnome.org/users/gedit/3.8
/gedit-search.html.en :

- You can press Enter to cancel a search and retain the current cursor
position. (This behavior is admittedly not consistent with other GNOME
applications; see https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=699658 for
a request to change this.)

- Right click the magnifying glass icon or the search text to get to
search options (match case, match whole world, wrap around).

I'm marking this bug as invalid because it mentions several different
issues, some of which were due to not understanding gedit's current
interface. Feel free to open up new bugs for individual specific
issues.

[Bug 1184363] [NEW] Default Applications offers only Firefox even though Epiphany is also installed

2013-05-26 Thread Adam Dingle
Public bug reported:

I'm running Ubuntu 13.10 (Saucy).

I have both Firefox and Epiphany (the epiphany-browser package)
installed on my system. But in the control center, Details-Default
Applications lists only Firefox. This is a recent regression (it
possibly arrived via the recent update from GTK 3.6 to GTK 3.8).

[Bug 1184363] Re: Default Applications offers only Firefox even though Epiphany is also installed

2013-05-26 Thread Adam Dingle
I investigated. All that's going on here is that Saucy still has
Epiphany 3.6, whose .desktop file doesn't mention x-scheme-handler/http,
which is currently necessary for gnome-control-center to recogize an
application as a Web browser. Epiphany 3.8's .desktop file does include
this MIME type, so the problem will go away when Saucy updates to
Epiphany 3.8 (which I hope will happen soon). So this is not a gnome-
control-center bug. Marking invalid.

[Bug 946095] Re: font not visible in terminal plugin

2013-05-24 Thread Adam Dingle
This has now been fixed in gedit-plugins git master upstream, but it
doesn't yet work with Ambiance when Use colors from system theme is
checked in your gnome-terminal profile (which is the default setting).
Ambiance will need a patch to make this work in Ubuntu - see

https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=694598#c14
