I'm using Dapper Drake with an HP LaserJet 4 Plus. When I add the
printer with the gnome-cups-add tool, everything goes fine so far. Then
I change settings (paper size from Letter to A4, Resolution to 600, ...
) and try to print a test page. It does print, but as letter
My ~/.cups/lpoptions is empty, 0 Bytes. (it's quite a fresh install)

I know have enabled cups administration via web interface (used root
account to authenticate), and now *it works*. I suppose it is a real
gnome-cups-manager problem. The changes, however, show up in gnome-cups-
manager now. It seems the gnome tool only can't write settings, but can
read them.
(To clarify to the above comment: The log entry Unauthorized even
appears when doing changes in the web interface.)

Now that I changed the parameters manually per web interface, it looks like
that.

For me, those symptoms started with gdm 2.30.4-0ubuntu1.
I second the race condition, since the problem doesn't always appear.
Sometimes after booting (minority of cases), the user list is shown
normally.
P.S.: Workaround: No need to install xdm. Just log into a VT and enter
startx.

Also affected by this bug; gdm uses 1360x768 instead of 1024x768. When
logging in, resolution changes to 1024x768 though. Applying 1024x768 as
system default in gnome-display-properties has no effect on gdm.
