Martin didn't right the patch for this - that was Jan Arne Petersen.
The bug this was linked to has a misleading title - the actual issue the
reporter was experiencing was the gap in the notification area
increasing in size each time the icon reappeared, but the reporter of
that bug kept mixing
This bug is an upstream one and it would be quite helpful if somebody
experiencing it could send the bug the to the people writing the

Both of those error messages occur internally to libappindicator because
the code assumes GtkStatusIcon is a subclass of GtkWidget, which is not
the case. This is the bit which fails (it causes those messages AND the
extra space to appear in the notification area):

I'm trying to help you by asking you to send it to the people writing
the software. The desktop team already has a significant amount of work
to do, and this isn't a priority issue. Your best chance of having it
fixed is to report it upstream first.

I'm not sure it's worth fixing in Karmic really. Everyone is busy
working on Lucid at the moment, this bug is not high priority and there
is also an easy workaround for it too. It's not the sort of bug that
most users are going to notice, and only a very small number of people
reported the issue
Could someone experiencing this please attach their /var/log/Xorg.0.log
and /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old after experiencing this issue
