Interestingly, in Jaunty I must kill gvfs-gphoto2-volume-monitor to get
even my Sansa e260 mp3 player to be recognized as well. This bug is
getting worse.
When gvfs-gphoto2-volume-monitor is running, I have the familiar last

This is a bug. The problem is that whatever app has it locked is not
letting go.
If I plug in my camera, I cannot access it in any application. I do not

switched to compiz (1.5 months), now I've seen it multiple times. The
only two people who have reported this with metacity I think made
mistakes--Dave's screenshot looks like a different bug and Tom's has
telltale compiz shadow

My patched version should only have the following effect: when you plug
in the machine, it should not execute the lid-closed action. It will
probably still execute it when you unplug it (which is not really a bug

fixes the usability issue. One actually has to right-click and choose a
non-default option to encounter this bug. Note also that I regularly do
use Safely Remove Drive when removing a USB HDD because that is the

I think the issue here is the same as the mail thread I linked in
comment 16. Affected users can try adding the brightness_in_hardware
hal key to their fdi file to see if it fixes it. See the mail thread for
more information and /usr/share/hal/fdi/information/10freedesktop/10
Well the underlying cause is the same between these two bugs, so perhaps
a g-p-m task on the other one would be the right solution here?
I'm not sure whether g-p-m should do sanity checking here: what if your
battery really will die almost immediately upon unplugging? I've had a

@hirumono: I think that's expected behavior. Can you eject your card
reader without a card in it? :) (Admittedly it would be nice to be able
to eject an empty CD tray, but I don't think it's worth considering it a
bug that you can't.) So, you have a different issue.
