[Bug 1132063] Re: Mouse settings missing from Mouse & Touchpad dialog

2015-12-29 Thread Doug Morse
Same problem on brand new 15.10 installed yesterday. From searching
Google, I see that plugging in a wired mouse brings the settings back,
and the pointer speed settings affects both mice. So, I've been able to
make the needed adjustment, and it persists. However, disconnecting the
wired USB mouse makes the settings again disappear (but the adjustment
persists). So presently I have to plug in a wired mouse anytime I want
to change the pointer speed.

[Bug 876929] Re: Evince crashes (segfault) under Unity with a custom theme

2012-01-03 Thread Doug Morse
Hi Jamie,

Thanks for the help, although I'm not sure the actions you propose will
fix the problem. /local/stores/morse is just a place I store large
files on a separate partition and has nothing to do with evince. I
relocate /usr/local to /srv/system/usr/local, a separate parition, and
create a symlink so as to preserve /usr/local contents across fresh
installs (which I typically perform instead of dist upgrades). The only
way I think /usr/local - /srv/system/usr/local could be involved is
that /usr/local/share/mime/mime.cache appears to be used by evince. Why
mime.cache is kept on /usr/local by debian / ubuntu is a mystery to me;
it's the one file that has prevented me from unmount /usr/local in the
past on previous installs -- by convention and perhaps by POSIX
standards, the OS should not by definition and by default not have any
dependencies on /usr/local, but that's another matter and not that big a
deal. :)

At any rate, I'm using evince fine since moving my trivial theme
customizations from $HOME/.themes to /usr/share/themes
($HOME=/home/morse, on a separate /home partition; $HOME !=
/local/morse) and I appreciate the all the help. So, the main issue is
resolved -- that I wasn't able to use evince at the time. However, I do
believe that the theme customization issue remains unresolved (i.e., I
shouldn't have to / it's bad form to change files in /usr/share), but
that's another bug for another time. :)

Thanks again and best wishes,
Doug

I presume you meant 'aa-complain' and yes, that fixed it. I had thought
that the problem might be AppArmour related, but did not think to check
/var/log/syslog, which clearly showed that AA was the problem. Below
you can see both the before (DENIED) and the after (ALLOW) -- after I
ran aa-complain -- in the syslog file:

[Bug 876929] [NEW] Evince crashes (segfault) under Unity with a custom theme

2011-10-17 Thread Doug Morse
Public bug reported:

I have created a custom theme -- a trivial derivation of Ubuntu 11.10's
stock Ambiance them, with the only changes being changing the selection
color from orange to blue (1 color change in 3 files) -- and everything
works fine except that evince crashes with a segfault.

I have run strace on evince -- attached -- of which the last four lines
are:

access(/home/morse/.themes/Dougs Theme/gtk-3.0/gtk.css, F_OK) = 0
open(/home/morse/.themes/Dougs Theme/gtk-3.0/gtk.css, O_RDONLY) = -1 EACCES
(Permission denied)
--- SIGSEGV (Segmentation fault) @ 0 (0) ---
+++ killed by SIGSEGV +++

All the relevant directories (/home, /home/morse, /home/morse/.themes/,
etc.) are either mode 755 or 700, files are mode 600, and all have
uid/gid that is my account.

So, I'm quite puzzled as to why evince is getting a permission denied
error, and even more so as to why this would result in a segfault.

Any help most appreciated, as I use evince all the time and it's rather
annoying having to change my theme back to Ambiance just to get evince
to work, whereas all other apps I've used since upgrading to 11.10 work
just fine with my slightly customized theme.

Thanks.

[Bug 876929] Re: Evince crashes (segfault) under Unity with a custom theme

2011-10-17 Thread Doug Morse
OK, just now I backed up /usr/share/themes/Ambiance to
/usr/share/themes/Ambiance.DIST and made the same three trivial changes
to the them -- changed selected_bg_color from #f07746 to #008ab8 in
gtk-3.0/settings.ini, gtk-3.0/gtkrc, and gtk-2.0/gtkrc -- and switched
to this updated Ambiance theme. Evince works fine now, with my minor
color change.

So, this definitely seems like a bug in evince. Again, my directories
and files should all be accessible to evince running as my user (morse):

morse@s3 ~ ls -ld /home/morse
drwxr-xr-x 96 morse morse 16384 2011-10-17 17:43 /home/morse

morse@s3 ~ ls -ld /home/morse/.themes/
drwx-- 6 morse morse 4096 2011-10-17 17:45 /home/morse/.themes/

morse@s3 ~ ls -ld /home/morse/.themes/Dougs Theme/
drwx-- 4 morse morse 4096 2011-07-25 13:24 /home/morse/.themes/Dougs Theme/

and all the dirs and files under 'Dougs Theme' are uid/gid morse/morse
and mode 700 (dirs) / 600 (files).

Thanks.

[Bug 712165] [NEW] iPhone no longer shows up in / is not recognized by Rhythmbox

2011-02-02 Thread Doug Morse
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

My iPhone 3GS was showing up and working just fine in Rhythmbox just a
month or two ago. I only use Rhythmbox to copy music to the iPhone,
which I have done previously and repeatedly without incident. For some
reason, I suspect due to an update somewhere along the line, the iPhone
stopped showing up within Rhythmbox.

Note that the iPhone DOES automount, show up on the desktop, and I can
browse it with Nautilus. I have tried go get Rhythmbox to recognize it
with (a) automount enabled and disabled, (b) automatically at Rhythmbox
startup and with Rhythmbox - Music - Scan Removable Media, and (c) all
logical combinations of (a) and (b). Nothing works.

In a nutshell, then, my iPhone functions as always with Gnome, Nautilus,
and any other way that I wish to work with it, but for some reason
Rhythmbox has, within the last few months, stopped recognizing the
iPhone.

[Bug 591693] Re: Wrong browser is launched when double clicking a link desktop entry (.desktop) file

2010-09-20 Thread Doug Morse
Hi, I seem to have a very similar problem: default browser of Firefox
seems to work fine across the board EXCEPT for when I double-click on a
.desktop file acting as a URL (i.e., like with Jakob, created by
dragging a link to the desktop). In my case, however, Opera is the
correct browser. At one point in time, I did have Opera set as the
default browser, but that was about 6 months ago. This is the first
time I've created desktop URL links, however, and hence also the first
time I'm experiencing this problem.

[Bug 591693] Re: Wrong browser is launched when double clicking a link desktop entry (.desktop) file

2010-09-20 Thread Doug Morse
[possibly SOLVED]

I have located and corrected the bug, at least in my case.

SHORT ANSWER

Edit $HOME/.local/share/applications/mimeapps.list, find the section
[Added Associations] and within that section fine a line that starts
with

  text/html=

and make your preferred browser the FIRST entry after the equal sign
(=).

LONG ANSWER

The file $HOME/.local/share/applications/mimeapps.list seems to be the
first thing checked for running a .desktop file (see attached example),
even preempting System - Preferences - Preferred Applications and
alternatives set by running sudo update-alternatives --config x-www-
browser.

The first part of my mimeapps.list file used to be:

  [Added Associations]
  text/html=opera.desktop;firefox.desktop;[]

and I changed it to:

  [Added Associations]
  text/html=firefox.desktop;opera.desktop;[]

As soon as I did so, double-clicking on a .desktop link / URL started
opening firefox instead of opera (which is what I wanted). (Note that I
also deleted the mimeinfo.cache file in the same directory, by I'm
confident it was not the source of the problem -- I can explain why if
needed).

Thus, it would appear that whatever entry comes FIRST on the
text/html= line is what Gnome runs when a user double-clicks on a
desktop URL file. IMHO this is a bug, as I would think that most users,
such as Jakob and myself, expect the Preferred Application setting be
used, not some setting in a file that we have to know about and can only
affect by editing manually.

More generally, I suspect this behavior holds for all entries listed
under the [Added Associations] section. I would suggest that, if more
than one association exists for a file type specified in this section,
Gnome then include an Open with... option on the right-clicking on the
.desktop file, and that the subsequent dialog box allowing the user to
select which program to run also have a checkbox with labeled something
like Remember this application for '' files. When checked, Gnome
would then re-order the corresponding entry in the [Added Associations]
section such that the choosen application is listed first.

In other words, I think that right-clicking on a .desktop file should
give the same Open with... options as when right-clicking on a
non-.desktop file. Granted, the underlying implementation might be
notably different, because Gnome would have to look *inside* the
.desktop file to get the mimetype instead of just examining the filename
extension, but I can't imagine that doing so would be that difficult.

[Bug 467668] Re: [regression-release] Neither compiz nor metacity nor nautilus are run at start

2010-06-06 Thread Doug Morse
@Leo

Yes, correct. My apologies, I misspoke. What I should have wrote is:
What we can be relatively certain of now is that, at a minimum,
something within the $HOME/.config folder is implicated as the source of
the problem, and at a maximum the source does not extend beyond $HOME.

I can say that I don't think that, at least in my case, it's limited to
just .config and .compiz -- not long ago (albeit Karmic, not yet Lucid),
I move .config, .compiz elsewhere, and also remove .cached, .gconfd, and
a few other reasonable candidate cache / session type files/folders from
console session (tty1) and then logged in again via gdm (tty7). No joy,
still the same problems. Again, just FYI, in case it helps.

I expect that, in my and more complicated cases, the solution may simply
be to create a new, empty homedir, reconfigure all GUI components again
manually, and then repopulate homedir with data and carefully repopulate
other dotfiles and dotdirs (i.e., one at a time or in small groups) so
as not to re-introduce the entanglement. Just not something that I
have time to do right now and I am holding out hope that, once it's
determined what the problem is within .config and/or .compiz, the
information from that discovery might help me hunt down what's going on
in my homedir. Right now, for me, the problem seems to be too much of a
complex and complicated interaction.

[Bug 467668] Re: [regression-release] Neither compiz nor metacity nor nautilus are run at start

2010-06-05 Thread Doug Morse
Hi Rob,

Per your request in bug #572617 -- my apologies for mis-posting there --
I removed my workarounds, moved my ~/.config directory to a backup
location, reboot the system, and then logged back on.

This most decidedly did NOT fix the problem. Indeed, it create quite a
mess, wherein, depending on what I tried to fix the mess, I'd get either
(a) just a blank desktop with only my desktop background image, that is,
no awn, no panels, not right-clicking on the desktop for a menu, simply
nothing (in these cases, switching to tty1, I saw that compiz.decorator
was running, but not compiz), or (b) a semi-normal desktop but desktop
appearances set to none and no awn.

Regarding (b), if I selected extra in System Preferences
Appearance, well, many things would happen, all of them bad.
Sometimes gnome-appeance-properties would then say Searching for
drivers and then sometimes it would return to the Appearances dialog
and other times it would say Could not set desktop effects. At other
times, gnome-appeance-properties would seem to then do something that
started a run-away loop; it's hard to explain, but it *seemed* like
compiz was continually restarting and/or perhaps fighting with
metacity?

Nothing did would then restore my desktop to a functional state.
Restoring my original .config directory and, either re-enabling my
workarounds or not, nothing did the trick. I had to restore my home
directory from the previous day and that did, finally, get me back to a
working desktop.

Thus, I strongly suspect that the problem is NOT just in a user's
.config directory. What all happened after I let gnome recreate a
.config dir, and the fact that restoring my original .config directory
did not fix the problem, are the primary reasons I think this. have
other reasons to believe the problem lies not just in the .config
directory, due to previous experiences that I've had, but I won't
elaborate on them here.

I'm probably stating the obvious, but it seems pretty clear that it's
some sort of timing / sequencing or coordination issue between multiple
components, perhaps compiz and gnome/gconf, maybe even the display
drivers and/or metacity?

From one of the times that I logged in and my desktop hung at displaying
my background image, I've attached: (a) the last 23 lines of my dmesg
file -- you can see the nvidia driver cycling, (b) my .xession-errors
file from the same point in time. I observed nearly identical behavior
on my 1yr old laptop with ATI radeon 3200 HD before implementing my
workaround, so I don't think this is just a driver issue, either
(although perhaps an interaction).

Lastly, I did create a new users and logging in / out as that user, with
desktop effects set to extra worked just find, and gnome did not
forget that extra had been set for this user. I believe this tells us
that the problem is limited to a users home directory, but not limited
to just the .config directory.

If I have some time soon (I doubt it, but who knows), I may try tackling
this in reverse: create a new user *without* the problem and see what I
can do to recreate the problem.

Hope this helps, and thanks for your efforts on this.

Doug

[Bug 572617] Re: [regression-release] Session manager lacks backward compatibility, making the desktop session unusable

2010-06-04 Thread Doug Morse
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 467668 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/467668

Hi,

Me too.

On an older desktop, which I just upgraded to Lucid from Karmic and
which had *none* of these problems before the upgrade, the only solution
that works is (b) compiz --replace as a startup item. This machine uses
the older nvidia 96 drivers.

On a very new laptop, which I just upgraded to Lucid from Karmic and
*already* had these kind of problems before the upgrade, the only
solution that works is (b) compiz --replace as a startup item. This
machine uses the new ati fglrx 8.723 drivers (2:8.723-1 in the repos).

Also, for both machines and after implementing the above workaround(s),
selecting Start Awn automatically under Dock Preferences does *not*
work. So, for both machines: I deselect this option, create
/usr/local/bin/awn-delayed as simple shell script which simply runs
sleep 5; avant-window-navigator, and then I create a startup item that
calls /usr/local/bin/awn-delayed . (Without the sleep 5 command, awn
seems to start before compiz, probably because in my workaround compiz
is running as a startup program, not as the gnome default window
manager, as would normally be the case. Others may need to adjust the
sleep time up or down according to their machine's speed.)

These two workarounds seem to get me machines that, when I log into
them, behave as I expect and as I think they ought to in Ubuntu by
default: Compiz starts (and extra shows up as selected in the System
- Preferences - Appearances dialog) and AWN starts.

HTH,
Doug
