Corruption regressed to the point that system would become unresponsive
as the display flickered back and forth between an old and current
state. If the system monitor app was running you could see the plots
progress in an odd stop motion.
Tried a number of other distributions but kept getting
Added CLUTTER_PAINT=disable-offscreen-redirect, still seeing corruption
Ran Memtest86+ v5.31b for 8 hours, no errors detected.

This is a fresh install of 2020.04.
Issue is that the display routinely gets corrupted and flickers with blocks of
previously open windows.
If left without a restart, the system menu text will get replaced by odd
characters and system dialog boxes will not display, buttons
The pointer changes on applications but not on the ... Desktop, panels
or window title. Surely, such actions are inconsistent and make us a
'laughing stock' of the windows users ?

I have now upgraded my Ubuntu to 9.04 and the problem stopped.
Before I upgraded I used fglrx. I'm not sure what video driver I am using now,
but it's not fglrx.
lspci reports my graphic card as:
