Can I add a me too and suggest the fix gets included into an update?
I've just toasted a CDRW due to being confused , now all I have to do is

O.k I've gone back to the Hardy version and the screen resolution is not
preserved between logins once again. The breakage occurs only after the
second and subsequent login, the first login worked just fine.

Well at the risk of a bug reporter of absolutely no value - it appears
to work now! I've no idea why it didn't immediately function but all
seems o.k. now.

I tried the deb (thanks very much for that) and the settings are still
not preserved between logins - even after rebooting the machine.

Having manually edited of xorg.conf to set Virtual as described in bug
#220563 on my system I find that the screen-resolution settings are not
preserved between different logins.
Go to System - Preferences - Screen Resolution and
monitors.xml attached
I'm using the 32 bit intel version of Hardy - I'll have a go at applying
the patch and rebuilding it, though I've never built anything as big as
gnome before so I don't rate the chances of success very highly! Also
it won't be until tomorrow.

sudo modprobe ppdev

Note that the bug is that the printer is not autodetected, you can get it to
work by selecting things manually. (This is mentioned in the original report
:-))
What I did:
1. Check that the hplip-ppds package is installed at the above version. (It
is!)
2. System-Administration-Printing and
