[Bug 1761554] Re: [bionic] Extended characters in GNOME screen keyboard don't get entered

2018-04-17 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
Did some testing on bionic.

It appears to me as if the feature is designed solely for Wayland. Yes,
on Wayland with GTK_IM_MODULE unset it seems to work without issues. On
Wayland with GTK_IM_MODULE=ibus I can reproduce the issues as described
above.

On Xorg the feature works very poorly irrespective of the value of
GTK_IM_MODULE. Basically you can only type the characters you see on the
first instance of the screen keyboard (which depends on the effective
XKB layout). Capitalized letters get typed as small letters, and most
extended characters don't result in anything or some wrong character.

Considering that Xorg will be default in 18.04, would it be worth the
regression risk to stop im-config from setting GTK_IM_MODULE this late
in the cycle in order to fix the feature on Wayland?

After having read one of Carlos' comments in the upstream issue, I
switched to a German XKB layout and was then able to type ü via the

2018-04-17 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
Hmm.. I now see that the issue is present in 17.10 too, so it's probably
due to something else but the latest IBus changes which affected
Ctrl+Shift+U.

I also see that some extended characters work. For instance, the letters
å, ä and ö, which are in the Swedish alphabet, work for me. Weird.

[Bug 1761554] Re: [bionic] Extended characters in GNOME screen keyboard don't get entered

2018-04-17 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
@Jeremy: Your workaround with not setting GTK_IM_MODULE makes me think
of bug #1760308, where that would have been an alternative solution (see
comment #6). Now Sebastien fixed it in IBus instead.

To stop setting GTK_IM_MODULE would be an easy thing in im-config, of
course. I'm hesitating since we have set that variable to ibus for many
cycles, and we are very late in the cycle. I don't understand the
significance of setting it, and I think it would be desirable to at
least consult with one or two IM users before making that change.

Or maybe Sebastien, who is already familiar with the IBus changes which
screwed up things wrt Ctrl+Shift+U, can give us a hint offhand on what
could be done on the IBus side.

[Bug 1756547] Re: LP refuses to import plural strings where e.g. msgstr[0] entries in PO file miss %d

2018-04-06 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
The build of gnome-shell 3.28.0-0ubuntu4 was not sufficient to fix this.
The POT file without javascript comments was imported, but LP still
complained about the PO files for the affected languages.

The upstream PO files have those javascript comments too. As a test I
took the upstream Czech file, removed the javascript comments, and
uploaded manually. Imported without errors.

Next thought: Was the first failure about timing, i.e. did LP use the
info in the old template to validate the PO files? To test that I took
the upstream Serbian file and uploaded it manually without removing the
javascript comments. Imported without errors.

Conclusion: A no-change rebuild ought to be sufficient to fix it in
gnome-shell for the other affected languages.

[Bug 1758647] Re: ubiquity doesn't preselect the right default keyboard layout

2018-04-04 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
I'm able to reproduce Sebastien's success by following the steps in
comment #9.

At the same time I'm able to reproduce the failure as reported by both
Pjotr12345 and myself via these steps:

- boot the iso
- patiently wait, without pressing any key, until Ubiquity boots
[yes Seb, I can be patient sometimes]
-> Ubiquity is booted with English preselected (see attached image)
- Change to Nederlands
-> The display language changes instantly
- Click the "ubuntu installieren" button
-> The basic English (US) layout is selected

So it seems like the language must be selected before Ubiquity boots to
get a reasonably guessed preselected layout.

But how would the user know that pressing a key initially makes a
difference when they are not told so? The official installation
instruction here:

https://tutorials.ubuntu.com/tutorial/tutorial-install-ubuntu-desktop

does not mention the syslinux menu either.

The desired behavior is reasonably that when you change the language on
Ubiquity's welcome screen, the preselected layout should be changed to
match the selected language (just as the display language is).

Btw, with the press-a-key approach, "Try Ubuntu" enters a session with
the correct layout in /etc/default/keyboard. So yes, this is probably a
pure ubiquity bug, not affecting gnome-settings-daemon.

[Bug 1758306] Re: Cannot switch mouse primary button in GCC

2018-04-03 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
I'm using real installs, not virtual.

I suppose you are talking about the vanilla-gnome-desktop package, then,
i.e. a meta package whose purpose is to install GNOME packages. The
login options are provided by the gnome-session package, and the options
are:

GNOME
GNOME on Xorg

I had gnome-session installed already, chose the GNOME option (which
means GNOME on Wayland), and could still successfully change the mouse
behavior via g-c-c.

So I couldn't reproduce the issue you described this time either, and
I'm out of ideas.

My 'problem' is that I can't reproduce the issue.

You now mentioned a few things, which indicate that your system isn't in
the best shape.

While I have tested this on "Ubuntu with Xorg", you mentioned that you

chance you can log in to an "Ubuntu with Xorg" session and check if the
problem is present for you there?

[Bug 1758647] Re: ubiquity doesn't preselect the right default keyboard layout

2018-04-02 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
@Pjotr12345: Thanks for the lesson on Dutch keyboards. :)

I can confirm that it's a regression compared to 16.04. On 16.04, if the
selected language matches the time zone location, a reasonable guess is
pre-set in the window for setting keyboard layout.

So if I select Nederlands and pretend to live in Haag, the installer
indeed suggests the us+intl layout.

This behavior was broken in 17.10, and I have a feeling that it's
related to the switch from unity-settings-daemon to gnome-settings-
daemon.

Compare:

http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~unity-settings-daemon-team/unity-settings-
daemon/trunk/view/head:/plugins/keyboard/gsd-keyboard-manager.c

with:

https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-settings-
daemon/blob/master/plugins/keyboard/gsd-keyboard-manager.c

The fix of bug #1719938 resulted in this patch:

https://bazaar.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-desktop/gnome-settings-
daemon/ubuntu/view/head:/debian/patches/ubuntu_ibus_configs.patch

which handles it for some locales which typically need input methods.
But for all other locales it simply defaults to the basic English (US)
layout.

As already mentioned, this may make the live session for many (most?)
languages disappointing. Typing is an essential part of the desktop
experience.

[Bug 1758306] Re: Cannot switch mouse primary button in GCC

@Simon: What makes you think that modifications of the GUI for the
region panel has anything to do with whether the primary button setting
is effective?

[Bug 1758306] Re: Cannot switch mouse primary button in GCC

2018-04-01 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
Thanks for your report.

It works fine for me on g-c-c 1:3.28.0-0ubuntu6.

The command line way to set it for left-handed is:

gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.peripherals.mouse left-handed true

and to see the current setting:

gsettings get org.gnome.desktop.peripherals.mouse left-handed

Changing that value is what the GUI in g-c-c is for. Can you please
check, through the latter command, if the value is changed when you use
g-c-c?

[Bug 1760482] Re: Translation files for Synaptic are missing

2018-04-01 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
Yes, they were, but the package change happened a couple of hours after
the export which preceded the creation of the latest language packs.
Consequently the translations will show up again after next langpack
update.

[Bug 1756547] Re: LP refuses to import plural strings where e.g. msgstr[0] entries in PO file miss %d

2018-03-28 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
There was a long IRC discussion about this issue yesterday:

https://irclogs.ubuntu.com/2018/03/28/%23ubuntu-devel.html#t12:21

I proved to be wrong about what has been causing the import failures:
It's not the msgstr[2] entries, but the missing %d in the msgstr[0]
entries.

However, the latest gettext version allows such missing %d, while the
xenial gettext version does not, and that has been preventing these
strings from being imported.

The plan is to upgrade the xenial gettext version in LP and with that
solve the problem for both gnome-shell and other affected packages.
Hopefully that can be done in due time and proved to work. If not, we
also identified a possible workaround which would require certain
modifications of the .pot files in all affected packages.

Assigning myself to the Ubuntu Translations bug task for now to more
easily monitor the progress.

** Summary changed:

- LP does not understand msgstr[2] entries in PO files

[Bug 1759251] Re: Ubuntu Single Sign-On not translated

2018-03-28 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
For test purposes I made this change:

$ diff /usr/bin/dh_translations.orig /usr/bin/dh_translations
112c112
<   @cmd=('make', $domain . '.pot');
---
>   @cmd=('make', $domain . '.pot-update');

Then I built gnome-online-accounts locally, and the .pot file was nicely
updated.

So making that change to dh_translations seems to be an alternative way
to handle this bug. Possibly it's the right way.

One doubt is whether there is a risk that other packages, whose .pot
files are created via this command, have versions of po/Makefile that
don't understand the -update suffix. Or maybe it's a standard thing
which ought to work in all cases.

Another thing is whether there are packages with externally maintained
.pot files which we don't want to overwrite this way.

For now, if we are not sure about those things, and since it's urgent to
make the strings available to the translators, I'd vote for building
gnome-online-accounts with the patch I wrote.

[Bug 1759251] Re: Ubuntu Single Sign-On not translated

2018-03-28 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
Actually I think that "make $(DOMAIN).pot-update" would have worked for
gnome-online-accounts. From po/Makefile:

# This rule has no dependencies: we don't need to update $(DOMAIN).pot
# at every "make" invocation, only create it when it is missing.
# Only "make $(DOMAIN).pot-update" or "make dist" will force an update.
$(srcdir)/$(DOMAIN).pot:
$(MAKE) $(DOMAIN).pot-update

I can't tell, though, if that's the case for all packages where
dh_translations runs make() to create the .pot file.

An alternative to the proposal in the debdiff might be to change line

in order to force an update without the rename trick. This might benefit

I see no issue with gnome-online-accounts. The .po files from version

[Bug 1758979] [NEW] Enable scrolling for "Formats" and "Input Sources"

2018-03-26 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
Public bug reported:

The fix of bug #1727710, which deals with the presence of many installed
languages, enables a scrollbar when needed for the first "Language"
window in the region panel.

To completely handle the presence of many installed languages, we need
to enable scrolling for "Formats" and "Input Sources" too.

[Bug 1716159] Re: gdm greeter does not allow non-US characters (like euro character €) when typing password

2018-03-26 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
@Daniel: If that workaround makes a difference, it sounds like the cause
of the problem is that LANG was set to a non-UTF-8 value (such as C or
POSIX). So it would be an encoding issue. Can you confirm that?

That package is needed for Kubuntu, and is installed only if the kio
package was installed previously, which it is not on standard Ubuntu
AFAIK. Not a bug.

[Bug 1539585] Re: After invoking ibus_panel_service_candidate_clicked UI is not updated properly

2018-03-24 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
Hi Sebastian,

Thanks for your report, and sorry for late response.

The version of ibus-libpinyin in the Ubuntu archive is now 1.9.2, and I
assume this issue is fixed there, so closing. Fixing it in previous
releases is low priority; it will only happen if you can find anyone who
is willing to do it.

ibus-libpinyin is the default input method for zh_CN in Ubuntu 18.04, so
we'll likely be more attentive to this package going forward.

[Bug 1756547] Re: Some strings cannot be translated because of an error

2018-03-17 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
The template provides two alternatives in those cases, a singular and a
plural, while some upstream Czech translator has provided three
alternatives, for instance:

msgstr[0] "před minutou"
msgstr[1] "před %d minutami"
msgstr[2] "před %d minutami"

So LP refuses to import, and is apparently confused also when you try to
fix it via the LP GUI.

I think you should resolve this with the upstream Czech translator(s).

In the meantime you may want to make an experiment: Download the Czech
PO file, add translations for msgstr[0] and msgstr[1], remove the lines
with msgstr[2], and upload the modified PO file manually.

[Bug 1754823] Re: Gnome Settings is inconsistent with how it respects spelling differences due to locale

2018-03-11 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
Thanks for your report!

The original strings are normally American English. Other flavors of
English are handled as translations. If your selected language is
British English, and the British English translation for a string is
missing, it falls back to the original string.

So I don't think this is a bug. Ideally all translations would be
complete always, but that will never happen. You may want to nudge the
English UK translators team about it (), but I suppose it would be hard for them to act on your
general observation. Closing this bug report.

Please feel free to file new reports about *specific* missing English UK
translations which you find especially disturbing.

[Bug 1754904] Re: Startup Applications desktop file untranslated on Ubuntu 18.04

2018-03-10 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
Thanks for your report!

Yeah, indeed.. yet another issue due to switching to the meson build
system. Those particular strings don't exist upstream any longer,
though.

There are also other, more important .desktop files in gnome-session
where translations are broken. I submitted a merge proposal.

[Bug 1754702] Re: input method on-screen animation prevents typing

2018-03-10 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
That other bug is several years old, and both the code and exact
behavior have changed since then, so I suggest that we keep them
separate and let an experienced developer evaluate their possible
relationship.

[Bug 1754702] Re: input method on-screen animation prevents typing

2018-03-09 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
Thanks for your report. Changing affected package to gnome-control-
center.

I recall . From the discussion there we
found that the input source chooser doesn't show up if you use some
alternative shortcut for switching input sources, but the delay during
which you can't type is still there.

There is which might be a duplicate
bug, but I don't mark it as such since I'm not sure.

[Bug 1727710] Re: Unable to access more than 20 languages in 1080p

2018-03-05 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
As regards installation of language packs I take it that we have two
options.

The best would be if the user could simply open the second Language
window and install from there. In that case the item list should
reasonably consist of language packs and not all the locales.

If there is not sufficient time to fix that in 18.04, I think we should
hide the second Language window as I propose in the MP and keep
providing language-selector-gnome for managing installed languages.

[Bug 1752313] Re: Desktop entries of some newly installed applications are untranslated until next reboot

2018-03-03 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
I saw the upstream response. So this bug will probably keep being open
for now.

Tested in Unity (16.04); the issue is not present there. Possibly unity
has some code which may be useful for an Ubuntu patch of gnome-shell.

[Bug 1753136] [NEW] Gettext package inconsistency

2018-03-03 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
Public bug reported:

New translation issue after the switch to meson. It's probably an
upstream thing, and I have filed an upstream bug report with a patch and
explained it there.

Possibly this motivates a new upstream release rather than distro
patches in Debian/Ubuntu.

[Bug 1747272] Re: Polkit dialogs of snapd are not translatable

2018-03-02 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
I digged a bit more about importing translations, and AFAICT it's a non-
issue. Reason: LP *is* upstream. The .po files in upstream git consist
of exported files from LP, and the latest sync happened last October.

[Bug 1747272] Re: Polkit dialogs of snapd are not translatable

2018-03-02 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
@AsciiWolf: Second thoughts on your note here:

https://github.com/snapcore/snapd/pull/4723#issuecomment-369923663

Are there actually so many new translations in the upstream source to be
imported? I see that the template in LP is dated 2018-02-20, which is
fine.

[Bug 1752313] Re: Desktop entries of some newly installed applications are untranslated until next reboot

2018-02-28 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
Thanks for your report!

I think it's sufficient to relogin, but otherwise I have experienced the
same.

Can you please submit an upstream issue about it, and then post the link
to it here?

https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-shell/issues

If it can be fixed, it should reasonably be done upstream.

[Bug 1749673] Re: Fcitx translation to Catalan not imported

2018-02-25 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
The translations including the template were stripped when fcitx
1:4.2.9.6-1 was uploaded.

https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/bionic/+upload/17654442/+files/fcitx_4.2.9.6-1_amd64_translations.tar.gz

However, LP refused to import anything.

https://translations.launchpad.net/ubuntu/bionic/+source/fcitx/+imports

So while the package side of this has been addressed, the LP import
issue (which affects multiple packages) remains to be solved.

So, Walter, since fcitx-data no longer installs any translations, the
the Catalan translations were just dropped for the users. :( Hopefully
this is just a temporary state which will soon be fixed on the Launchpad
side.
