Did some testing on bionic. It appears to me as if the feature is designed solely for Wayland. Yes, on Wayland with GTK_IM_MODULE unset it seems to work without issues. On Wayland with GTK_IM_MODULE=ibus I can reproduce the issues as described above. On Xorg the feature works very poorly
