[Bug 2012388] Re: X11 window (usually AnyDesk) at top-right of the screen is invisible and steals mouse clicks

2023-10-10 Thread Jack Kowalski
Temporary solution:
1. jack@jack:~$ xwininfo
2. Click on the invisible square in right top corner
3. Get the square ID (Window id):
"
> xwininfo: Please select the window about which you
> would like information by clicking the
> mouse in that window.
>
> xwininfo: Window id: 0xc02f07 (has no name)
"
4. jack@jack:~$ xdotool windowclose 0xc02f07

I need to do this every time i use AnyDesk

[Bug 2037773] Re: Rebuild against latest webkit2gtk

2023-09-30 Thread Jack Howarth
Actually, I just checked gnome-online-accounts in the gnome-control-
center under X11 nvidia and it is also broken for the Google login.
Clicking the Google Account under the Online Accounts options, produces
and empty window whereas under Wayland nvidia, the sign in content is
displayed. So
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/webkit2gtk/+bug/2023322
appears to be the same issue and remains unresolved in 23.10.

2023-09-30 Thread Jack Howarth
FYI, I see that same bug, with no content in the Help application, for
both the 6.5.0-5.5 and 6.5.0-6.6 kernels. Only resorting to the
change...

Exec=env WEBKIT_DISABLE_COMPOSITING_MODE=1 yelp %u

or using Wayland suppresses the bug.

[Bug 2037773] Re: Rebuild against latest webkit2gtk

2023-09-30 Thread Jack Howarth
I still see the bug with your build. One correction though. Apparently
my proposed fix of changing...

* debian/control.in: Bump Standards-Version to 4.6.2

is insufficient. It seems that my previous workaround of changing
/usr/share/applications/yelp.desktop to contain...

Exec=env WEBKIT_DISABLE_COMPOSITING_MODE=1 yelp %u

rather than

Exec=yelp %u

survives closing yelp and reinstalling the packages. After a reboot,
with that change no longer in the desktop file for yelp, the bug
returns.

[Bug 2037633] [NEW] Help browser produces empty windows under nvidia drivers on X11

2023-09-28 Thread Jack Howarth
Public bug reported:

The Help browser in the dock on Mantic produces an empty window without
content when launch under X11 using the nvidia-driver-535
535.104.05-0ubuntu4 video drivers. If I logout and login back in under
Wayland, the Help browser behaves normally and produces the expected
content in its window.

[Bug 1969447] Re: 42.0-1ubuntu6 doesn't recongize the presence of NVIDIA_PRESERVE_VIDEO_MEMORY_ALLOCATIONS=1

2022-04-20 Thread Jack Howarth
Daniel, I disagree. This bug is actually about the fact that the test
crafted in /lib/udev/rules.d/61-gdm.rules doesn't parse as expected in
udev. We also should probably file a bug report against upstream udev as
the changes added to support escaped quotes in #6890 aren't robust
enough.

[Bug 1969447] Re: 42.0-1ubuntu6 doesn't recongize the presence of NVIDIA_PRESERVE_VIDEO_MEMORY_ALLOCATIONS=1

2022-04-19 Thread Jack Howarth
Note that I stumbled onto the above fix after noticing the example shown
for the udev escaped quoting support showed an example with double
quotes surrounded by single quotes which in turn surrounded escaped
double quotes...

https://git.alternativebit.fr/NinjaTrappeur/Systemd/commit/7e760b79ad143b26a5c937afa7666a7c40508f85

udev-rules: all values can contain escaped double quotes now (#6890)
This is primarly useful to support escaped double quotes in PROGRAM or
IMPORT{program} directives.

The only possibilty before this patch was to use an external shell script but
this seems too cumbersome for trivial logics such as

 PROGRAM=="/bin/sh -c 'FOO=\"%s{model}\"; echo ${FOO:0:4}'"

or any similar shell constructs that needs to deals with patterns including
whitespaces.

As it's the case for single quote and for directives running a program, words
within escaped double quotes will be considered as a single argument.

Fixes: #6835

2022-04-19 Thread Jack Howarth
I have found that current /lib/udev/rules.d/61-gdm.rules can be fixed by
swapping the order of the single and escaped double quotes from...

IMPORT{program}="/bin/sh -c \"sed -e 's/: /=/g' -e
's/\([^[:upper:]]\)\([[:upper:]]\)/\1_\2/g' -e 's/[[:lower:]]/\U&/g' -e
's/^/NVIDIA_/' /proc/driver/nvidia/params\""

which fails to parse correctly to...

IMPORT{program}="/bin/sh -c 'sed -e \"s/: /=/g\" -e
\"s/\([^[:upper:]]\)\([[:upper:]]\)/\1_\2/g\" -e \"s/[[:lower:]]/\U&/g\"
-e \"s/^/NVIDIA_/\" /proc/driver/nvidia/params'"

which parses properly and allows the test for

ENV{NVIDIA_PRESERVE_VIDEO_MEMORY_ALLOCATIONS}!="1",
GOTO="gdm_disable_wayland"

to succeed when /etc/modprobe.d/nvidia-power-management.conf contains...

options nvidia NVreg_PreserveVideoMemoryAllocations=1

[Bug 1969447] [NEW] 42.0-1ubuntu6 doesn't recongize the presence of NVIDIA_PRESERVE_VIDEO_MEMORY_ALLOCATIONS=1

2022-04-19 Thread Jack Howarth
Public bug reported:

The current /lib/udev/rules.d/61-gdm.rules has a broken rule for
detecting the presence of NVIDIA_PRESERVE_VIDEO_MEMORY_ALLOCATIONS=1.

This issue can be seen by adding a file /etc/modprobe.d/nvidia-power-

options nvidia NVreg_PreserveVideoMemoryAllocations=1

and then rebooting. Manually executing the test used in

[Bug 1969447] Re: 42.0-1ubuntu6 doesn't recongize the presence of NVIDIA_PRESERVE_VIDEO_MEMORY_ALLOCATIONS=1

2022-04-19 Thread Jack Howarth
I am wondering if the use of escaped quotes in the failing rule of
/lib/udev/rules.d/61-gdm.rules is really being honored. There don't seem
to be any other examples of deployed udev rules which actually use such
escaped quotes.

[Bug 1968929] Re: No Wayland support on my NVIDA laptop

2022-04-18 Thread Jack Howarth
How can we even know whether the Nvidia power mananagement support is
broken or working if the Ubuntu Nvidia packaging never starts nvidia-
hibernate.service, nvidia-powerd.service, nvidia-resume.service and
nvidia-suspend.service like rpmfusion on Fedora? Of course, we would
need a /etc/modprobe.d/nvidia-power-management.conf to get
NVreg_PreserveVideoMemoryAllocations=1. However, I'm still unconvinced
that the current check for NVreg_PreserveVideoMemoryAllocations=1 in
61-gdm.rules is really functional. In my hands, even though I had
NVreg_PreserveVideoMemoryAllocations=1 present from addition of a
/etc/modprobe.d/nvidia-power-management.conf contaiining

options nvidia NVreg_PreserveVideoMemoryAllocations=1

the test...

IMPORT{program}="/bin/sh -c \"sed -e 's/: /=/g' -e
's/\([^[:upper:]]\)\([[:upper:]]\)/\1_\2/g' -e 's/[[:lower:]]/\U&/g' -e
's/^/NVIDIA_/' /proc/driver/nvidia/params\""
ENV{NVIDIA_PRESERVE_VIDEO_MEMORY_ALLOCATIONS}!="1", GOTO="gdm_disable_wayland"

in 61-gdm.rules never recognized its presence. It seems like the rule
might not be properly parsing the escaped quotes.

Also, I looked at the Debian packaging for nvidia and I don't see any
evidence that they have ever started those power management related
services.

[Bug 1968929] Re: No Wayland support on my NVIDA laptop

2022-04-18 Thread Jack Howarth
"gdm3 (42.0-1ubuntu6) jammy; urgency=medium

  * Fix Wayland no longer being available for everyone
- Fix by adding a separate revert patch instead of trying to
rebase the cherry-picked patches (LP: #1969243)
  * Please note that Wayland is not currently available for
systems using the Nvidia graphics drivers because those drivers
don't properly handle suspend and resuming from suspend. It is
intended for those drivers to be fixed in a future stable release
update for Ubuntu 22.04 LTS. See bug 1968929"

Does this imply that restoration of Wayland support for Nvidia will be
treated like the upgrades to new major kernel releases and only occur
after the 22.10 Ubuntu release?

What is Ubuntu's definition of a 'stable release update' in this case
regarding Nvidia driver support for Wayland? Does this imply, as I fear,
an update only after the fix has been deployed in another full Ubuntu
release? If so, this would imply that we won't have Nvidia Wayland
support until 22.10 is released.

Looks like Fedora 36 won't have this problem with Wayland on Nvidia
because their associated rpmfusion packaging for xorg-x11-drv-nvidia
adds a nvidia-power-management.conf with the following contents into
/etc/modprobe.d...

#
# Save and restore all video memory allocations.
options nvidia NVreg_PreserveVideoMemoryAllocations=1

Alternatively, you can add a /etc/modprobe.d/nvidia-hack.conf file
containing the line...

options nvidia NVreg_PreserveVideoMemoryAllocations=1

and work around the apparently broken line...

IMPORT{program}="/bin/sh -c \"sed -e 's/: /=/g' -e

's/^/NVIDIA_/' /proc/driver/nvidia/params\""

by adding...

ENV{NVIDIA_PRESERVE_VIDEO_MEMORY_ALLOCATIONS}="1"

after it in order to restore the use of Wayland under Nvidia.

in /lib/udev/rules.d/61-gdm /lib/udev/rules.d/61-gdm. I would note that
logging out back to gdm doesn't make these changes to

anyway.

[Bug 1969197] [NEW] 42.0-1ubuntu4 blocks usage of Wayland on GT 1050 graphics card

2022-04-15 Thread Jack Howarth
Public bug reported:

Like the previous proposed 42.0-1ubuntu3 packaging of gdm3, the proposed
42.0-1ubuntu4 prevents Wayland from being used on a X570 UD v1.1
motherboard with 5600X processor and Nvidia GT 1050 graphics card. This
proposed change in the gdm3 should be considered a blocker as it defeats
the upgrade to using Wayland in 20.04 LTS.

[Bug 1969198] [NEW] 42.0-1ubuntu4 blocks usage of Wayland on GTX 1050 graphics card

2022-04-15 Thread Jack Howarth
Public bug reported:

Like the previous proposed 42.0-1ubuntu3 packaging of gdm3, the proposed
42.0-1ubuntu4 prevents Wayland from being used on a X570 UD v1.1
motherboard with 5600X processor and Nvidia GTX 1050 graphics card. This
proposed change in the gdm3 should be considered a blocker as it defeats
the upgrade to using Wayland in 20.04 LTS.

I've seen the same issue with focal and System76 Stable PPA's
460.32.03-1pop0~1611601564~20.04~11a4029~dev nvidia packaging. All text
was corrupted after waking from suspend but it has only occurred once so
far.

[Bug 1870867] Re: gnome-shell crashed with SIGABRT meta_x11_get_stage_window: assertion failed: (META_IS_STAGE_X11 (impl))

2020-08-11 Thread Jack J
I am still getting this bug with the proposed version. Ubuntu 20.04 on a
Lenovo machine.

I hope I updated correctly, I followed the instructions linked above to
activate the "proposed" repository and installed the package with "sudo
apt install mutter/focal-proposed", then deactivated the "proposed"
repository and rebooted my machine. For the record, "dpkg --status
mutter" shows "Version: 3.36.4-0ubuntu0.20.04.2", so I think I did it
correctly. I did not touch gnome-shell. "gnome-shell --version" shows
3.36.3.

I used the touchscreen and triggered the bug after just a few minutes.
gnome-shell crashed and some familiar messages were dumped in the
syslog:

[Bug 1878611] [NEW] accountsservice 0.6.55-0ubuntu12~20.04.1 update crashes into greeter

[Bug 1845801] Re: [nvidia] Automatic login fails and then all subsequent logins fail. Killing gnome-session-binary fixes it, or just not using automatic login.

2020-04-18 Thread Jack Howarth
This bug is definitely triggered by the built kernel image loading the
nvidia drivers. The autologin failures and associated hangs on restarts
can be suppressed as follows...

1) Edit /etc/config/grub to remove 'splash' from GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT
2) Regenerate /boot/grub/grub.cfg with 'sudo update-grub'
3) Regenerate the initrd.img files by using 'sudo apt-get --reinstall install'
to reinstall the currently installed kernel packages.

After rebooting, the autologin feature in gdm3 can be reselected and on
the next reboot, it will autologin as expected. No loading the nvidia
module through initrd.img also eliminates the hangs on restarting while
autologin is enabled.

I suspect the folks who thought removing splash from grub.cfg didn't
work had failed to rebuild the initrd.img files after regenerating
grub.cfg.

2020-04-18 Thread Jack Howarth
Couldn't the nvidia packages all be modified to prune 'splash' from
/boot/grub/grub.cfg prior to rebuilding its kernel modules and thus
regenerating the initrd.img files?

Confirmed that setting 'WaylandEnable=false' in /etc/gdm3/custom.conf
under 20.04 has no impact on the autologin bug with nvidia-340.

2020-04-17 Thread Jack Howarth
20.04 RC shows the same problem with the nvidia-340 drivers on a MacPro
3,1 with Mac ROM'd GTX680. The autologin is ignored and the greeter is
shown instead. While the login works fine at the point, restarting then
causes the system to hang rather than completing the restart.

I have this too, but with Slack and Nautilus. Steps to reproduce:

3. The opened Nautilus window is now grouped with the Slack icon on the

"title" and not document "name" on titlebar. This is very annoying since
titles are pdf metadata that most commonly do not make sense, while pdf
names (i.e. location) are easily modified by user and nexessary to
distinguish files. This is actually a rebirth of an old issue that eas
fixed in previous versions of Evince

[Bug 1765960] [NEW] nautilus fails to insert disk with eject key

2018-04-21 Thread Jack Howarth
Public bug reported:

The nautilus handling of removable media capable of automated insertion
is flawed. On a MacPro 3,1, running bionic for instance, the first use
of the eject key on the keyboard ejects the SuperDrive DVD tray but the
second use of the eject key doesn't cause the tray to auto-insert. This
should be possible to fix as the manual execution of 'eject -t' on the
command line does cause the ejected tray to auto-insert back into the
drive.

[Bug 1765044] [NEW] Cannot set per display scaling from `Displays` applet

2018-04-18 Thread Jack Burgess
Public bug reported:

(First of all, this is my first ever bug report :tada: so some
information may be missing)

Ubuntu Budgie 17.10
gnome-control-center - 1:3.26.2-0ubuntu0.2

Using the `Displays` applet, I am trying to set my primary display to have 200%
scaling.
However, this causes all displays to use that setting.
I can change other settings for my external display (and the `Apply` button
appears) but when I change the scaling setting to 100%, I am unable to save!

I submitted a report initially to https://github.com/UbuntuBudgie
/budgie-desktop-environment/issues/91, but they have directed me here.
Apologies if this is in the wrong place - please move around if need be.

[Bug 1709667] Re: Missing desktop scaling slider in system settings

2017-09-09 Thread Jack Peterson
With a bit more testing I have one other issue related to the
enhancement -- when I add a secondary monitory and I adjust the scaling
from one of the two options on a 2560x1550 monitor (100% or 200%) the
apply button is not visible anywhere to actually set the setting.

[Bug 1709667] Re: Missing desktop scaling slider in system settings

2017-09-09 Thread Jack Peterson
The new implementation does work for updating the settings; however,
it's glitchy.

What I mean by that is when one has the settings set for 200% scaling,
reboots the VM and then logs back in (at least in VMWare -- haven't
tested elsewhere) the scaling for text is at 100%; however, icons appear
to be scaled. In order to get the whole desktop experience working
correctly the following sequence needs to be followed:

1. set scaling for the display to 100%. click apply. Click keep settings.
1.a. Repeat #1 because you need to do it with more feeling.

2. set the desktop to 200%.
2.a. Repeat #2 because, once again, more feeling is required to get the setting
to stick than the initial click of 'keep settings'.

3. Close and re-open any applications that utilize the DPI scaling
functionality.

[Bug 367372] Re: Gedit uses 100% of the CPU while editing files

2014-06-11 Thread Jack De Waele
I'm on Trusty and just got this same issue with gedit, 95%CPU and
slow/no response to typing. This is the first time I got this. I noticed
that it only occured when I open gedit via the launcher to create a new
document. I then opened gedit by double-clicking an existing textfile
and it opened without problem, no heavy CPU load, good response, even
for a new empty file. After closing gedit and start via the launcher
everything was OK again. But this makes it impossible for me to
reproduce the issue and investigate some more.

[Bug 838543] Re: False battery warning +suspend

2013-06-04 Thread Jack O'Connor
A similar bug is affecting me, and maybe my situation can shed some
light. I actually DO have two batteries in my laptop. If one of the
batteries is depleted when I resume from sleep, I see this battery is
critically low warning followed by suspend, even though the other
battery has plenty of power. While the machine is running, the first
battery drains without any problem, so this seems to just be a wake-
from-sleep issue. Likewise, if I reboot the machine with one battery
drained, it boots fine.

So my uneducated guess is that there's some battery-low event handler
somewhere that gets triggered on wake and doesn't properly check the
total power in all batteries. It looks like other reporters are having
(an unrelated?) problems with phantom batteries, which could be leading
them to the same issue I'm having with real batteries.

[Bug 911592] Re: [precise] Too few certificate authorities listed after upgrade to 12.04

2013-02-21 Thread Jack Ostroff
[I've tried to post this several times, and it keeps disappearing before
I can commit. Apologies if it appears more than once.]

I seem to be having the same problem with Evolution 3.2.2-0ubuntu0.1 and
libnss3 3.14.1-0ckbi1.93ubuntu.0.11.10.1 under Ubuntu 11.10. I'm not
yet ready to upgrade to precise, so I'm wondering if there is any way to
backport the fix.

Doing it manually gives
tar: dist-upgrade/20120404-1338/apt-term.log: Cannot open: Permission denied
so as I suspected a permissions problem

Still seems to include the file tho

[Bug 682788] Re: Global menu is not ergonomical on large screens

What about the hidden window controls for maximized windows? Shouldn't
there be also an option to disable the hiding since you've got a lot of
space on a large screen.
