[Bug 629258] Re: Battery life estimation never comes around

2010-09-04 Thread Jan-Christoph Borchardt
Marking as invalid for the same reasons as your previous bug:
»The new battery menu (which you should have if you are running Ubuntu Lucid or
later) does not have tooltips / mouse over text anymore. Instead it has a menu
item directly showing »Laptop battery X hours X minutes left«.

It does not need to estimate anymore, so I’m going to mark this bug as
invalid.«

If it occurs nonetheless, you should either update your system or report
this upstream to GNOME: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Upstream/GNOME

[Bug 270963] Re: when you unmount a volume, show your home

2010-08-29 Thread Jan-Christoph Borchardt
I would say this is not a duplicate but a sequel of that bug.

Redirecting to Computer does not seem such a good fix because:
- It exposes the filesystem even more
- It is very unlikely that you want to continue working in Computer because
there normally is:
  - CD/DVD Drive (which you haven’t used in months)
  - Filesystem (…)
  - USB Drive (the one you probably just ejected)

Redirecting to one’s home folder is a much more sensible and useful
solution.

[Bug 626074] [NEW] Double-clicking on archive should extract it

2010-08-28 Thread Jan-Christoph Borchardt
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

Currently, clicking on an archive opens file-roller. To extract an
archive, one needs to right-click and select ›Extract Here‹.

As the major use case for archives (mostly downloads) is extracting them rather
than modifying files in them, this should be switched:
Double-clicking (or clicking in single-click mode) should extract the archive
(like on Mac OS).
The right-click option for ›Extract Here‹ should be changed into something like
›Edit Contents‹, which would then launch file-roller.

gedit: 2.30.0git20100413-0ubuntu1

When I open a .doc document, I expect gedit to open it like Vim, Emacs and even
Nano:
Just read out the bare text to produce a jumbled heap of

somehow human-readable if found.

Instead it gives me:
»Could not open the file /PATH/example.doc.
gedit has not been able to detect the character encoding.
Please check that you are not trying to open a binary file.
Select a character encoding from the menu and try again.«

[Bug 569809] [NEW] it is not possible to drag tabs from one window to another

2010-04-25 Thread Jan-Christoph Borchardt
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

Taken from a question of mine:
https://answers.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+question/108320

Tom made me aware of the fact that dragging tabs from one instance of
Nautilus to another is not possible. It works with Firefox, Chromium
etc., it should too with Nautilus.

[Bug 532844] Re: Lucid: White symbols on light panel and Ubuntu Logo are difficult to see

2010-04-10 Thread Jan-Christoph Borchardt
That's weird. If you switched the theme back to normal, this dot should
be black as well. Mine is.

Maybe yours are configuration problems rather than bugs. I'd then
recommend the clean install you mentioned already. Do not install the
beta on a production machine though (only if you like experimenting
and/or know what you are doing). ;)

[Bug 532844] Re: Lucid: White symbols on light panel and Ubuntu Logo are difficult to see

2010-04-09 Thread Jan-Christoph Borchardt
Did not have branding-ubuntu, installed it, restarted. Radiance still
works fine for me. Ambiance etc. still do not.

@Kenneth: It is not about an applet. The Menu Bar applet works fine
because the white Ubuntu logo has dark background there. It is the white
Ubuntu logo in the white »Add to Panel«-dialogue that is invisible.

Same here. But Radiance is still working fine, black logo on
white(/beige) background both times.

Could you please make a screenshot of your Menu Bar with logo and the
part of the »Add to Panel«-dialogue where the Menu bar is?

[Bug 554036] Re: some .CR2 (RAW) pictures are displayed mirrored

2010-04-08 Thread Jan-Christoph Borchardt
I don't quite understand the first paragraph. Sounds like the reason is
that the file is corrupted? This happens only for some pictures, I can
not recognize a pattern.

I can now confirm them failing to open in F-Spot though. File corruption
seems quite possible here. :(

I'll try unflipping, opening them on other computers and repairing them
somehow. A shame that I don't look at my RAWs too often.

Thanks.

[Bug 532844] Re: Lucid: White symbols on light panel and Ubuntu Logo are difficult to see

2010-04-07 Thread Jan-Christoph Borchardt
A similar bug is still present in the GNOME »Add to Panel«-dialogue,
where the Ubuntu logo next to »Main Menu« and »Menu Bar« is white-on-
white-invisible.

This happens for all dark themes [Ambiance, DarkRoom, Dust, New Wave].

(Running latest Lucid Beta updates.)

Though you have to close and reopen the »Add to Panel«-dialogue to let

[Bug 554036] [NEW] some .CR2 (RAW) pictures are displayed mirrored

2010-04-02 Thread Jan-Christoph Borchardt
Public bug reported:

EoG, Evince and gnome-raw-thumbnailer display a mirrored image for some
CR2 RAW files. In F-Spot it is displayed correctly (see the attachment).

I am running the latest Lucid Beta.

Due to the different filetype and because it only happens for some
images, I was not sure if this could be considered a duplicate of

[Bug 548684] [NEW] [window controls] maximize and minimize icons are symmetric but do not perform a symmetric action

2010-03-26 Thread Jan-Christoph Borchardt
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: metacity

Maximize and minimize are completely different actions, not opposites.
They should not be represented by symmetric icons.

Additional problems:
In themes »Dust«, »Ambiance« and »Radiance«, the minimize icon is a
downward-pointing arrow. This leads to confusion when one has the window list
placed in a top panel. The maximize icon does not even change state when the
window is maximized.

In »New Wave«, the up arrow for maximizing could be confused with »shove
window in top panel« (minimize).

A line for minimizing is probably better than a down arrow because it addresses
the function more than the looks (direction).
I am unclear what is best for maximize though. The expand icon for YouTube
clips is good but not very recognizable in smaller size.
