I have the below settings in a lab, to lock the environment down, to
prevent screen locking and user switching and other bad habits in this
context. It is all mandatory gnome settings. I set it with
gconftool-2 --direct --config-source

This is a wish-list report:
In a lab environment, or corporate, or anywhere with central disk space quotas,
dot-thumbnails (and lately .gnome2/gthumb/remote_cache/ too) can get quite
large,
and users can then get upset and blame me because they didn't do anything and

I can confirm this bug on Dell Optiplex Desktops running an up-to-date
dapper. This problem did not exist on breezy.
Note that I did not use GUI tools to configure CUPS, I edited
/etc/cups/cupsd.conf and added ServerName myprintserver.mynetwork.ac.za.

I haven't touched the default cupsd.conf. I attach client.conf. I did the
ServerName and restarted CUPS, and it seemed to work. The gnome-cups-icon
problem is intermittent, not easily reproducable, but has

for connected printers but it has never interfered (on breezy) with the
majority which use a network-wide CUPS server on another host. I'll turn
it off on this box and see if the problem occurs again.

The cups server is not running, and this machine is a client
to a CUPS server on another host.
The strace as in other comments gave (and it wouldn't
ctl-c, I had to kill -9 the strace):

I can confirm this on a recently installed edgy.
/home was mounted nfs/autofs async and didn't have a problem.
/var/mail was mounted nfs/autofs sync, and opening more than one mutt, or
waiting for the timeout, or something made the processes (a couple of mutts and
a cat /var/mail/me) accessing

Well, perhaps my problem was unrelated. /var/mail on autofs/nfs (server
is sarge) was running fine on breezy and dapper. Now, after some
minutes:

I find now that even though I reset the dial method to tone (not pulse),
modem monitor - properties (network-admin) does not remember this. When
dialing, ATDT is changed to ATPT in the appropriate place in
/etc/chatscripts/ppp0 by something.

Thereafter (once I closed that) it is back to the original error from
a feisty install (btw, another machine, edgy dist-upgrade to feisty, does
not do this).
No volume control GStreamer plugins and/or devices found

Confirmed on Hardy.
The login screen, the user/password box cannot be read, it is too huge.
The options menu on the login screen cannot be closed once open or read.
Some pages in firefox have huge fonts (the page 2 3 4 5 6 links at the bottom
of a google search)

Confirmed on saucy 13.10, vlc plays asterisk generated wav files OK,
totem does not.
