[Bug 410337] Re: Log in screen is confusing, not clear what to do

2010-03-12 Thread Mat Tomaszewski
If there is only one registered user on the machine, Ubuntu should
display the focused password field immediately. This will resolve the
issue for the majority of affected users.

have to stop working, even though there's still plenty of battery life

[Bug 441210] Re: boot and gdm wallpaper is not dithered

2009-10-30 Thread Mat Tomaszewski
Tested on a Dell netbook (1024x600) and a Macbook Pro (1920x1200). Seems
to work very well on both, some minor jpeg compression artifacts are
still visible, but to much lesser extent than previously. Overall, the
background is much smoother.

Would be good if someone could also test it at 16bpp and compare with
the previous version.

The beep could be re-enabled by the user if he specifically requires it,

[Bug 441210] Re: boot and gdm wallpaper is not dithered

2009-10-18 Thread Mat Tomaszewski
There are two issues, both are not related to color depth. One problem
is that the image does not use dithering, second is the jpeg
compression. Xsplash renderer seems not to deal with either very well.
To resolve this problem, two things can be done: image should have
dithered colors and the compression should be lower (ideally none). The
latter isn't really possible, due to the limited space on a CD (non-
compressed png is about 2.5MB). Attached is the new version, with
slightly lower compression and dithering. Please test and report the
results!

Cheers,

Mat

Yes I see the problem now. Please remember that the quality of rendering
is app-dependent, some apps deal better with dithering fine gradients
than others. We may not be able to solve that in xsplash, but it is
still a problem and I'll keep trying to resolve it.

2009-08-07 Thread Mat Tomaszewski
There is one issue that needs to be addressed. Some users will expect to
be able to press Enter as soon as the login screen appears, in order to
quickly access the password entry screen.

The proposed solution has been added to a wiki:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DesktopTeam/Specs/Karmic/LoginExperience#Login%20screen%20with%20user%20picker%20and%20more%20than%20one%20user%20account

The user name displayed at the top of the list should not be selected by
default. Pressing Enter should result in selecting the user from the top
of the list, unless any other menu item or button has been manually
highlighted.

[Bug 15495] Re: Archive Manager doesn't mean anything if you don't know what an archive is

2009-06-24 Thread Mat Tomaszewski
Mac OS (tiger) uses Create archive of [whatever was selected]. It is
very difficult to understand for new users as well as for people coming
from the Windows Compressed (zipped) files world. So the problem we're
facing is that Archive is the only correct way of describing the
general category of files that have been... archived :)

A common understanding is that archive = compressed zip file. That is
not true. But on the other hand, there should be an easy and intuitive
was of creating zip files, immediately discoverable. The question is,
should we use a wrong name, just because that's what people have learned
using Windows, or should we try and teach users correct name instead,
showing that Archive simply means a zip file or equivalent. The only
issue is to make the initial connection between their mental model (I
want a zip file) and the correct menu option (Create Archive).

Reassuming: Compress... does not sound optimal, because:

- it's not necessarily going to be compressed

and, more importantly:

- it may not be enough guidance for people trying to create .zip
files.

The more I think about it, the more I can't see any easy solution. One
way could be to have an additional menu option saying Add to .zip
file, that would simply create .zip archive without any prompts. And
that's quite ugly. The other would be to somehow suggest that Create
Archive has something to do with creating .zip files. This is also non-
trivial - Create Archive (.zip) would be incorrect, since there are
other options available and the default selection is tar.gz.

Maybe there is a better solution, but if not, I think Compress... is

[Bug 28835] Re: Unmount in volume right-click menu, is tech-speak and undiscoverable

2009-06-19 Thread Mat Tomaszewski
Right, lots of interesting thoughts and opinions, but no conclusion :)
And the bug is waiting for the fix!

Since there is no better solution than Eject, this is what we should use. It
may not be perfect, but it's much better than unmount.
Also, I suggest moving this option up (mockup attached), as it's likely that
when the user right-clicks on the removable media, this is the option he's
looking for.

If I'm articulating to someone how to find their home folder or answer
the question Where's my stuff?, then saying Click places, then home
 sounds logical and succinct.

This applies to the English localizations nicely, what about languages
in which home doesn't translate well?

 The best is Home Folder.

I agree that Home in English sounds better than Home Folder. This

again run into danger of inconsistent translations...

[Bug 61237] Re: Drag 'n Drop in list view doesn't work

2009-06-15 Thread Mat Tomaszewski
During our recent usability tests one of the subjects (an accountant,
using Windows/MS Excel daily) had huge problems with dragging and
dropping a file (exactly as described here) and, after about five
minutes of trying - already very frustrated - had to revert to right-
click copy and filepaste to finally succeed. I don't have to mention
that by that moment his opinion about Ubuntu had already been formed.

Issues like that hurt Ubuntu's reputation greatly. I was surprised
seeing this bug's priority set to Low, this is certainly a high-
priority issue.

[Bug 383255] [NEW] Eject/Unmount Human theme icon in Nautilus should have hover and click states

2009-06-03 Thread Mat Tomaszewski
Public bug reported:

Lack of hover state for this icon makes it feel non-clickable. Click
action does not feel right either, as you don't see any immediate
feedback (e.g. color or bg change).

I'd suggest making the icon glow on hover (similar to folder icon
behaviour) and go darker on click.

[Bug 358775] Re: Messaging Indicator icon should appear as the leftmost icon

2009-04-14 Thread Mat Tomaszewski
I appreciate technical reasons for not fixing the bug. Still I think
that in the long run the MI should probably not seat between the
volume/network/battery/date indicators. ATM the space to the left of
these feels most natural, mainly because you're less likely to notice
the icon state change if it's squeezed between two or three other icons.
That said, I'm not implying it should be always on the far left. Subject
for the separate discussion I guess.
