[Bug 1897460] Re: VLC Snap Incompatible With Thunderbird

2020-10-04 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
Andrew, I suggest deciding what you want this bug report to be about.

If it’s about the VLC snap, then in this case Sebastien suggests it’s a
bug in snapd.

If it’s about Ubuntu Software, then you should change the steps to
reproduce to focus on Ubuntu Software.

Either way, it should not be filed on software-center, which is a
separate app altogether.

[Bug 1817080] [NEW] “In the news” (related blog posts) on app page

2019-02-21 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
Public bug reported:

When snapcraft.io has a post mentioning a snap, that post should be
linked to from an “In the news” section on the gnome-software app page.
For example, see the posts linked to from

This might require requesting a snapcraft.io API to return the posts.

I suggest:
* The links should be positioned immediately above the reviews section.
* They should be laid out in three columns, like on snapcraft.io.
* If there are more than three posts, only the most recent three should be
shown.

Feel free to post a screenshot for visual review if desired.

[Bug 1614818] Re: Integrate Ubuntu bug reporting configuration into gnome-initial-setup

2018-08-31 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
Imagine arriving at a hotel where the receptionist gives you your room
number, your key, and instructions on what to do if you find bedbugs. Or
entering a restaurant where the server takes you to your table, takes
your drink order, then asks you who you would like them to call if you
get food poisoning. You’d think something was terribly wrong with this
place.

It’s fine to have UI for configuring crash reporting, somewhere out of
the way. gnome-control-center is a good place for it: I designed UI for
precisely that a few years ago.
But I think it would be
highly inappropriate to *interrupt* people with UI that mentions
crashes, until a crash actually happens — and especially not in the
first/second/third screen in Ubuntu that they ever see.

[Bug 1775798] [NEW] Inappropriately uses Snapcraft icon when snap is missing an icon

2018-06-08 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
Public bug reported:

When a snap does not have an icon, gnome-software uses the Snapcraft
logo as a substitute.

This is not a good idea, because:
- It gives the Snapcraft logo an association of “something is missing”.
- It gives the Snapcraft logo an association with a snap that might be terrible.

What should happen: Snaps without icons should have a generic icon that
does not include the Snapcraft logo.

(The snapcraft.io equivalent is .)

[Bug 1775794] [NEW] Drop screenshot placeholder area

2018-06-08 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
Public bug reported:

Upstream gnome-software is targeted solely at graphical applications. So
the app view has a large “No screenshots” placeholder, to encourage the
publisher to upload screenshots.

In Ubuntu the balance is different. gnome-software displays snaps as
well as .debs. And many snaps have only a command-line interface, or (in
the case of daemons) no user interface at all. It is still *possible* to
upload relevant graphics, for example a screenshot of a terminal, or
even a diagram. But it is much less likely, and those kinds of
developers are also less willing and able to do so.

Therefore, the Ubuntu version of gnome-software should omit the “No
screenshots” placeholder.

[This was discussed in the gnome-software design sprint.]

[Bug 1711791] Re: Remove the word 'Ubuntu' from 'Ubuntu Dock settings'

2017-08-21 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
That is a very strange layout: lots of boxes, inconsistent padding, a
mysterious button, something that looks like it’s supposed to be a
switch but appears to be static text, and something that looks like it’s
supposed to be a checkbox but appears to be a switch.

Anyway. I agree with dropping the word “Ubuntu”, but I can guess why
Didier used it: to distinguish our version from Dash to Dock.

So, is the launcher called “Dock” anywhere outside of the settings UI?
If not, I would suggest retaining the name “Launcher”: it’s more
specific, it’s consistent with previous versions of Ubuntu, it avoids
using the same name as macOS, and it distinguishes our launcher from
Dash to Dock in the same way that the word “Ubuntu” did.

Either way, I suggest dropping the word “Launcher” from the three labels
below the heading. The heading makes it obvious what the labels are for.

The problem is that if you don’t know+remember about the existence and

[Bug 1466408] [NEW] Help Frequently Asked Questions/Report a Problem… go to 404 pages

2015-06-18 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
Public bug reported:

Shotwell 0.18.0, Ubuntu 14.04

1. Choose Help Frequently Asked Questions or Report a Problem….

What happens: Your browser opens a 404 page with an odd error message: There
isn't a GitHub Pages site here. Well, no there isn't, but there isn't what I
was looking for either.
http://redmine.yorba.org/projects/shotwell/wiki/ShotwellFAQ
http://redmine.yorba.org/projects/shotwell/wiki/ReportingABug

What should happen: You see Frequently Asked Questions and a problem-
reporting form, respectively.

The relevant pages seem to have been moved to wiki.gnome.org:
https://wiki.gnome.org/Apps/Shotwell/FAQ
https://wiki.gnome.org/Apps/Shotwell/ReportingABug

So this can probably fixed more easily, and for more users, by setting
up redirects on redmine.yorba.org than by changing the Shotwell package.

This is a regression of bug 1179186.

[Bug 552920] Re: Moving diagonally from narrow menu title often opens adjacent menu

2015-05-05 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
** Description changed:

  gtk 2.22, Ubuntu 10.10

  1. Click on the volume control to open the sound menu.
  2. Move the pointer diagonally to click on the maximum volume button.
+
https://launchpadlibrarian.net/42732636/Why_autoexpanding_indicators_are_a_bad_idea.png

What often happens: The sound menu closes, and the menu next to it opens.
- Screnshot:
https://launchpadlibrarian.net/42732636/Why_autoexpanding_indicators_are_a_bad_idea.png
  Screencast: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lVUokjAlREs
Example in an informal usability test:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpagev=PgGbZfR6Vec#t=13m55s

What should happen: The sound menu stays open.

- A solution would be to use a timer for the 'auto-expanding' feature.
+ One solution would be to make the volume slider vertical. But this would
+ not work for other menus (like the Bluetooth menu), and would look
+ awkward with other items in the menu.

- From an IRC conversation on this bug:
- bratsche Okay, so gtk+ has something internal called (I think) a stay-up
triangle.. but as far as I know, it's only used when dealing with submenus from
a menu.
-  But try to envision a menu with several menuitems, and the first menuitem
has a submenu with several menuitems. Your mouse is currently over the top
menuitem of the parent menu and the submenu from it is open to the right.
-  Now when you move the mouse toward say the middle of that submenu, you'll
probably mouse-over a menuitem below the current one in the parent menu..
-  But there are two things that can keep it from becoming the active
menuitem.. a timer, and this stay-up triangle.
- bratsche Anyway, we should think about this some. Indicator icons are
small enough that in the case of indicator-sound, going to all the trouble of
duplicating this stay-up triangle might be more trouble than it's worth.
Judging by the screenshot in qense's bug, the stay-up triangle would cover
most the majority of the neighboring indicator icon anyway, so maybe a simple
timer would be enough.
+ Another solution would be to use a timer for closing the current menu
+ and opening a new one. This is what Windows does for submenus. But it
+ has the drawback of slowing down browsing, which would be worse for top-
+ level menus than for submenus.

- Illustration of the invisible triangle for submenus:
+ GTK already has a more sophisticated solution for submenus, similar to Mac
OS: a triangle based on the corners of the submenu and its parent item, in
which there is a much longer delay for closing the submenu and changing the

[Bug 627195] Re: Window management - Apps raised from indicators sometimes dont have the focus

2015-03-18 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
JaSauders, when a window opens or asks for focus, the window manager has
to decide whether focusing it is a good idea.

If you choose an item in an indicator menu, wanting to see a particular
window, obviously it should be focused, right? Well, no. For example,
when I choose the date item in the clock menu, Evolution takes 31
seconds to launch and open its window. If I get bored and continue
typing this comment in Firefox in the meantime, I don't want the
Evolution window to be focused when it eventually opens, because that
would mean some of my typing would go into the wrong window.

So, a window should be focused if you don't do anything -- or you aren't
*about to* do anything -- between the time you ask for it and the time
it opens. Simple enough, right? Well, no. Because the window manager
usually doesn't know (A) exactly what action of yours -- if any --
caused the window to open in the first place, or (B) whether you are
about to do something. (It can't see your finger getting ready to press
a key, for example.) The fixes for this bug address (A), by including
the timestamp of your menu selection with the request to launch a
particular app. But sometimes that isn't possible, often it isn't
supplied even when it is possible, and either way, that still doesn't
address (B).

So the focus-prevention-level setting is a dial for how eager the window
manager should be in granting focus requests. The higher it is, the more
often you'll get focus sticking -- a window failing to take focus when
you expect it to. But the lower it is, the more often you'll get focus
stealing -- one window taking focus while you are trying to use another.

[Bug 674920] Re: Hinting: menu underline too thick in Firefox

2015-03-03 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
I too have different font rendering (in my case, hinting) in
Firefox+Thunderbird than in every other Ubuntu app, and no-one has ever
figured out why.

Anyway, as David implied, this is not a problem with the Ubuntu font,
since the font doesn't do underlining. It's more likely to be a problem
with Pango.

[Bug 1394253] Re: Bluetooth discoverability confusing

2014-11-28 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
After force-closing System Settings and relaunching it, there is a tiny
pause the first time I visit the Bluetooth screen, but none on
subsequent occasions, and none when I exit the screen. So the timers
aren't working. The checkbox animation is probably bug 1276066.

This doesn't require any design work: the spec already spells out that
there should be a one-second pause between entering the screen and
starting discoverability, and a one-second pause between stopping
discoverability and exiting the screen.

[Bug 16492] Re: Mouse pointer should disappear when keyboard is in use and mouse isn't

2014-10-14 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
A. Eibach, has unclutter improved at all on the reasons it was removed
from the default install before (described in my 2010-06-17 comment)?

I suspect that an external utility will always be too slow, Ubuntu has
so many toolkits that trying to fix it there will always be a game of
whack-a-mole, and X maintainers will balk at anything that smells like
policy. So it may be that the only reliable way to fix this is in Mir
or Wayland.

[Bug 1351299] Re: GPS switch should be turned off when Location detection is off

2014-10-09 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
Location in general has four UI points: the first-run setup, the
location indicator, System Settings Location screen, and the prompt
where trust-store asks you to grant an app access to your location.
Changing one without changing the others would introduce inconsistency.

Probably we should start from the prompt -- because that is under
constraints such as don't show more than one prompt about the same
thing -- and from there design the solution for the other three.

[Bug 1324572] [NEW] Rotate Image? dialog doesn't offer understandable options

2014-05-29 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
Public bug reported:

gimp 2.8.10-0ubuntu1, Ubuntu 14.04

1. Open an image containing EXIF rotation data.
2. Try to decide whether to rotate the image.

What happens: You aren't given the information necessary to make the decision.
What should happen: You are given the information necessary.

A dialog appears with a thumbnail and the question: According to the
EXIF data, this image is rotated. Would you like GIMP to rotate it into
the standard orientation? Unfortunately, it doesn't tell you what EXIF
data is, or what the standard orientation means. Most importantly, it
doesn't tell you whether the thumbnail represents the image before or
after the rotation it is suggesting!

One way of fixing this bug would be to redesign the dialog to be
dominated by two thumbnails, one before rotation and one after, and let
you click on the one you want.

Another way would be to not put up the dialog at all, and instead rely
on you to use Gimp's normal Rotate function if you need to.

then Totem's plugin installer should give a hint, to use that repo's
libdvdcss2 to play your DVDs. Newbies wont find out how to solve this
problem by theirself, go back to win, and then it will be harder to
  solve the bug #1 :)

  Not to be confused with:
  * bug 502426, where DVDs don't play when libdvdcss is installed
  * bug 745515, An error occured location not found while trying to play a DVD
  * bug 747433, Totem cannot play this type of media DVD because it does not
have the appropriate plugins to be able to read from this disc
-
- -
- Desired solution:
-
- This bug will be fixed as part of the larger 3rd party codec install
- project (project contact Christian Giordano).

[Bug 590243] Re: Add blank screen now option

2014-03-26 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
The problem with this suggestion is, what if you wanted to lock the
session *and* blank the screen? Would you have to choose Lock first,
and then Blank Screen Now from the lock screen? That would be too much
bother. Or would just choosing Blank Screen Now lock the session as
well? Being next to a Lock item would make it seem like it didn't,
even if it did. All that, plus the cognitive burden of an extra item in
the menu.

The solution is much simpler: Lock should always blank the screen
*and* lock the session. This is no burden: when the time comes to
unlock, any keypress or touch of a pointing device will wake the screen.
And this is why, when locking is disabled, the menu item is still there
but says Start Screensaver instead.
