I have reinstalled jaunty to be sure because i'm using it since alpha 4.
For testing I used the official image of ubuntu 8.10 alternate amd64
So I have made two pictures one in german-de locale and one in english-us
locale. There is the same problem with fileroller.

This is clearly a leak in the gnome-shell process. Comparing the memory
consumption before and after shows a massive increase. Whether this
originates in mutter/mesa/wayland will have to be determined.
It can be reproduced easily while concurrently resizing any tiled
application windows.
