[Bug 1228765] [NEW] Need to implement DisplayConfig dbus interface within Unity

2013-09-21 Thread Tim
Public bug reported:

For GNOME 3.10, all the display configuration/xrandr code has been moved
into Mutter as dbus interface. The Main reason for this move was to
abstract away the display server (x11/wayland).

This affects gnome-desktop3 and gnome-settings-daemon. In particular the
changes in gnome-desktop would create a gigantic mess if we tried to
revert these changes for Unity only. As such it seems the cleanest
solution would be to copy the display config interface from Mutter into
Unity. The code itself is fairly self contained, so apart from the
resulting duplication of code, it shouldnt really be much of an issue.

[Bug 1227537] [NEW] crashes with gsettings-desktop-schemas 3.10

2013-09-19 Thread Tim
Public bug reported:

currently g-s-d 3.8 crashes when running gsettings-desktop-schemas 3.10
as per gnome3-team ppa. Due to some changes in how the deprecated
settings are handled.

While this fix isnt specifically required for saucy it does make things
easier for us, and it will be one less thing to worry about when it
comes time to update gsetting schemas early next cycle.

[Bug 1225785] [NEW] syncing of input sources to accounts services is broken

Public bug reported:

There is a g_variant type mismatch in the patches that sync input-
sources to accountsservice

I noticed that the sleep-display-battery gsettings key is gone with 3.8.
ubuntu-system-settings started setting it. It'll have to be adjusted. I
think the interface is now to set both
 org.gnome.desktop.session.idle-delay and
 org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.power.sleep-display-{ac,battery}.
It is now just

org.gnome.desktop.session.idle-delay

These 2 sleep-display keys have been removed.

org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.power.sleep-display-{ac,battery}.

Otherwise, ACK conditional on Seb not finding any big issues in the next
two days (let's say by 2000 UTC Tuesday 10th). If it slips much further
than that then it'll be too close to release for me to be comfortable
 any more.

[Bug 1222053] [NEW] per-session gsettings overrides

2013-09-07 Thread Tim
Public bug reported:

There have been several occasions now where Ubuntu GNOME has had to
patch code, that could in theory instead be handled by per-session
gsettings overrides. A recent example is the background plugin in gnome-
settings-daemon, this should be loaded under unity, gnome-flashback
sessions but not gnome-shell session. A per-session override would make
this possible without any patches to the codebase.

As I understand it the overrides are processed by glib-compile-schemas
so perhaps we would have to recompile schemas on each login to achieve
this? Any thoughts on how we can achieve this?

The Ubuntu GNOME team has been testing gnome-settings-daemon 3.8 with
packages available in the GNOME3 Staging PPA (for 13.04 users) since the
Saucy cycle opened. We didn't get the upload in by Feature Freeze
because we were waiting for indicator-keyboard to land in Saucy to make
sure that this upload didn't cause any regressions with the input method
support. There are no known remaining regressions with this upload.
Tim did a CFT on ubuntu-desktop a while back. Did you get much feedback
 either way from this?
Apart from the one guy that was replying on list, I had a couple of reports
that input switching
wasnt working (but that is fixed now).

Just asking; I've been running on my desktop and apart from the issue
below I didn't notice anything untoward. I've not customised very much
 though.

I can no longer reproduce bug 1201679 with this build.

gnome-control-center also needs updating (for moved gsettings keys and
similar) and gnome-shell needs a patch to be dropped. I am ready to
upload all three of these packages now.
ubuntu-settings also needs an update for idle-dim-time.
That is just a simple key rename.

 Cheers,

[Bug 1219337] Re: Users can change the clock without authenticating, allowing them to locally exploit sudo.

2013-09-03 Thread Tim Ingalls
As a person working in a secure facility with quite a few machines
running Ubuntu, this is a major security issue. This is a flaw that
allows root access without a password. The fact that this issue is being
brushed off is angering, but even worse is that it's been made public. I
shouldn't even be able to know about an issue like this until it has
been fixed already. This issue needs to be taken seriously, and fixed,

[Bug 1219486] Re: FFe: Update gnome-settings-daemon to 3.8.4

2013-09-02 Thread Tim
Running gnome-shell 3.8 on gnome-settings-daemon 3.6 is likely to be
very buggy and unstable. Although admittedly it hasn’t had a huge amount
of testing since the assumption was that we would get g-s-d 3.8 into
saucy.

For the 3.8 cycle many features were moved out of gnome-settings-daemon
and into other components such as mutter and gnome-shell. Most of these
however require code changes in g-s-d to use the new components. Other
than this there were not really many new features added to g-s-d and it
is largely just a big bug fix release.

- OSD Popups are now drawn by gnome-shell so that they match the shell UI.
- Keygrabber was moved into gnome-shell, since there were lots of issues with
media_keys keybindings not working in certain parts of gnome-shell
- Background plugin was moved into mutter
- Screenshots are handled by gnome-shell.
- Power support is pretty much broken when using g-s-d 3.6

All of these were moved to overcome technical limitations making it hard
or impossible to fix key bugs. In most cases by sticking with 3.6 we do
not get to take advantage of these new components and we are left using
the old unmaintained and buggy implementations.

In addition there are lots of bug fixes for things like power plugin,
notifications etc.

As for mixing g-s-d 3.8 with g-c-c 3.6, apart from a few moved gsettings
keys there are no major issues.

A lot of work went into improving a number of the upstream panels
(particularly network, power and region panels), and there a number of
new panels (notifications, privacy etc). However these changes are more
or less contained to g-c-c and don't introduce incompatibilities for
g-s-d.

Clearly Ubuntu GNOME really wants g-c-c 3.8 for these improvements. The
remaining Unity issues are all mostly trivial, however have basically
been blocked waiting on input from the desktop team. As far as I know no
one even bothered to look at this, even when I was working on these
issues very early in the Saucy cycle.

Nearly all the work I did on g-s-d was to fix Unity Integration. g-c-c
was split more evenly between general ubuntu integration and unity
integration. Obviously if regressions pop up, I will get them sorted.

[Bug 1196196] Re: [background]: gnome-control-center crashed with SIGSEGV in g_type_check_instance_cast()

2013-07-23 Thread Tim
To reproduce this crash, go into gnome background panel and select a new
background before the thumbnails have finished loading. I have no idea
why the thumbnails are loading really really slowly, however if you wait
a while so all images are loaded then selecting a new background does
not cause it to crash.

This only happens in 3.6.3, I cannot reproduce is 3.8, however I also
can't see any obvious differences in the code that might affect this.

[Bug 1185873] Re: Update gnome-session to 3.8

2013-05-30 Thread Tim
1. re-enabled autostart patch in package on gnome3-staging

2. I suspect this won't be an issue until/if we land g-s-d 3.8 (still
should be tested though.

3. I think the journald stuff is harmless and can stay as is, for now.

[Bug 1179659] Re: Gnome Control Center Crashes when attempting to open Details (Ubuntu 13.10)

2013-05-28 Thread Tim
** Description changed:

- On Ubuntu 13.10, when I search for Details in the dash, I see the
- mouse cursor (meaning it's loading something). But then gnome-control-
- panel crashes and I get Ubuntu 13.10 has encountered an internal
- error.
+ [Impact]
+ * Gnome control center will crash when Clicking on the Details tab.
+ * only affects the virtualbox glX driver
+
+ [Testcase]
+ - Load VirtualBox VM with 3D enabled.
+ - Open gnome-control-center and click 'details'
+ - This will crash gnome-control-center, 100% reproducible
+
+ [Regression Potential]
+ Very low, this patch adds a glXQueryVersion call, which forces the virtualbox
glX driver to correctly initialise before calling glXChooseFBConfig. This is
entirely redundant on any other glX drivers and unlikely to cause any
regressions.
+
+ === Original Bug Report ===
+ On Ubuntu 13.10, when I search for Details in the dash, I see the mouse
cursor (meaning it's loading something). But then gnome-control-panel crashes
and I get Ubuntu 13.10 has encountered an internal error.

This also happens when I go to System Settings from the launcher and
  then to Details.

  Bug Details

  1) Ubuntu version: Ubuntu 13.10 x64

  3) Expectation: I expected that the Details section of the Control Panel
would open.
  4) Reality: Nothing happened; not even a window opened. I only get an error
(mentioned above).

2013-05-16 Thread Tim
User reported a work-around:

Edit (or create) /etc/X11/xorg.conf as follows: (ugh, can't format,
should be a tab before each line except the first and the last).

Section Device
Identifier Intel Graphics
Driver intel
Option AccelMethod uxa
EndSection

Restart X (reboot, restart your display manager, whatever). Colors are
back to the way they used to be and flash works.

I have the same problem with my E530. Also, if I adjust the brightness
through display settings, it does not remember them next time I boot.

It makes a significant difference to the battery life, so it would be
great to get it corrected :-)

[Bug 1178982] [NEW] Flash plug-in displays Purple / green and malformed screen in Firefox (Lubunt 13.04)

2013-05-11 Thread Tim
Public bug reported:

1. Lubuntu 13.04 / Linux 3.8.0.-19-generic
2. I do not know and can not check as the computer in question is no longer in
my possession

Flash does not play movies properly, resulting in a purple/green screen
that is completely out of proportion.

Happens mainly on Dell Dimension computers with an Intel chipset:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2132368p=12641898#post12641898

One user reported falling back to an older Kernel as a workaround

I did find the following workaround. When booting, I choose the
Advanced Ubuntu options and pick either Linux 3.5.0-27-generic or Linux
3.2.0-40-generic. With either, the video/flash is fine. The default
kernel is Linux 3.8.0-19-generic, and that is the version where it does
not work

2013-05-01 Thread Tim
Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Examining the information you have given us, this does
not appear to be a bug report so we are closing it and converting it to
a question in the support tracker. We appreciate the difficulties you
are facing, but it would make more sense to raise problems you are
having in the support tracker at https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu if
you are uncertain if they are bugs. For help on reporting bugs, see
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs#When%20not%20to%20file%20a%20bug.
There is also a vibrant support community available at
http://askubuntu.com and you might consider asking your question there.

[Bug 1174648] [NEW] network settings, vpn modules don't load.

2013-04-30 Thread Tim
Public bug reported:

gnome-control-center fails to find the Network-managers vpn modules.

gnome-control-center is looking for the modules in /usr/lib/x86_64
-linux-gnu/NetworkManager/

However network manager + plugins packages install these modules too,
/usr/lib/NetworkManager/. Which was changed due to Bug LP: #985788.

[Bug 1174655] [NEW] reimplement support for external modules.

2013-04-30 Thread Tim
Public bug reported:

In gnome-3.8 support for external panels has been removed.

I have written a patch to re-implement these, however it has the
following limitations.

- modules (i.e. panels with .so files) need to have the desktop file
name gnome-'module'-panel.desktop. Although I currently have a fallback
in place for 'module'-ccpanel.desktop, since a few extensions seem to
use that also.

- launchers (i.e things like language), are loaded from a static list of file
names, which is within the patch. I really didn’t want to haul the gmenu code
back in. So this seems like a good comprise. A number of tweaks will need to be
made to various desktop files however:
+ language-selector: needs an independent desktop file for panel laucher, so
we can hide it in Ubuntu GNOME g-c-c, but not apps search
+ ubuntu privacy panel: needs to be set to OnlyShowIn=Unity.
+ ubuntu appearance panel: needs desktop file renamed to suit above format
+ deja-dup and privacy: should be renamed to gnome-*-panel format.
+ there maybe a few others, I havent really done a thorough check here.

- there was a macro, CC_PANEL_REGISTER which is now renamed
CC_PANEL_REGISTER_EXTERNAL, I am not sure if any extensions use this,
but if they do that will need to be changed.

package with patches is at ppa:darkxst/logind for now

[Bug 1171519] Re: gdm disregards /etc/gdm/custom.conf exclude user list

2013-04-26 Thread Tim
The greeter settings in custom.conf are obsolete and no longer available
in the gnome-shell greeter.

Only disable-user-list is available, Filtering specific users has not
been implemented AFAIK.

The correct way to do this is to make an .override file in
/usr/share/glib-2.0/schemas

[Bug 1110580] Re: no gdm at start up. only tty (not really working either)

2013-04-18 Thread Tim
Can you upload you gdm logs from /var/log/gdm/

Best if you first enable debug mode by editing /etc/gdm/custom.conf
(although you may need to re-install gdm, since it looks like that file
is missing in your logs above).

[Bug 1168612] [NEW] display graphics info for nvidia blob

2013-04-13 Thread Tim
Public bug reported:

Currently no graphics card info is show for nvidia blob.

This is fallout from the glxinfo replacement patch, and since that has
been backported, I imagine it will be broken in 3.6 g-c-c also.

I have a upstream fix awaiting review in the linked bug. I will try and
get this backported before next weeks final freeze.

[Bug 1162849] Re: Split GDM packages

2013-04-09 Thread Tim
It should be sufficient to just include the following files in a
seperate libgdm binary package (well these are symlinks so also need the
corresponding files for /usr/lib/gdm)

/usr/lib/gnome-shell/Gdm-1.0.typelib
/usr/lib/gnome-shell/libgdmsimplegreeter.so.1
/usr/lib/gnome-shell/libgdm.so.1
/usr/bin/gdmflexiserver

There is no dependency on any of the other gdm binaries that I am aware
of.

[Bug 1163674] Re: Adding a printer crashes Gnome Control Center (System Settings)

Seems we are missing a dependency on 'system-config-printer-gnome'. All
the other flavours have that in their desktop meta package, we probably
should too.

[Bug 1132700] [NEW] PS1 arguments required for gnome-terminal 3.7.0

2013-02-25 Thread Tim
Public bug reported:

As of gnome-terminal 3.7.0, it is required to add the following to PS1
to get the usual behaviour where a new terminal opens with the current
working directory of the terminal you activated it from.

export PS1='\[$(__vte_ps1)\]'$PS1

gnome-terminal devs suggest to put this in .bashrc, however since this
basically causes a regression, it would make sense to deal with it at a
distro level and perhaps include it in the system bash scripts or
similar.

The actual change was made in libvte so this may potentially affect any
application that uses that library.

As a side note: __vte_ps1() is provided by /etc/profile.d/vte.sh, which
is installed by libvte, however atleast on my system this script is not
getting sourced at login for some reason.
