[Bug 742544] Re: Launcher is shown on the wrong screen in some multi-monitor setups

2011-11-24 Thread W.John Guineau
N!

This was working great since my post #73 above until I rebooted this
morning. Now the launcher is back to being stuck all the way on the left
monitor and the settings-Displays does not have the black bar for me to
drag the launcher back to the middle of my desktop (left side of my
primary monitor).

I am still on Daniels PPA as far as I can tell:

[Bug 742544] Re: Launcher is shown on the wrong screen in some multi-monitor setups

2011-11-24 Thread W.John Guineau
Looks like these got updated in the past day:

gnome-control-center 1:3.2.1-0ubuntu1 = 1:3.2.2-0ubuntu1
gnome-control-center-data 1:3.2.1-0ubuntu1 = 1:3.2.2-0ubuntu1
libgnome-control-center1 1:3.2.1-0ubuntu1 = 1:3.2.2-0ubuntu1

Could that be it?

[Bug 742544] Re: Launcher is shown on the wrong screen in some multi-monitor setups

2011-11-24 Thread W.John Guineau
Hi David,

Yes, NVIDIA with TwinView.

Nothing in my xsession-errors about UScreen at all. I renamed the old
one, logged out and then back in again and ran the System-
Settings-Displays and attached the resulting xsession-errors here.

See anything interesting in there?

Very strange - I just noticed it looks like I have unity-2d running? Why is
that? I have a pretty decent machine (Core i7 860 with NVIDIA GeForce GTX 275
graphics) so it should be running Unity 3D right?

[Bug 742544] Re: Launcher is shown on the wrong screen in some multi-monitor setups

2011-11-24 Thread W.John Guineau
OK, I fixed it. Somehow my NVIDIA drivers were messed up. I removed all
nvidia drivers (nvidia-current et al) and reinstalled them. Upon reboot
my launcher is back in the middle of the display surface (left side of
right monitor) and Unity 3D is back.

what the heck happened there?

[Bug 742544] Re: Launcher is shown on the wrong screen in some multi-monitor setups

2011-10-23 Thread W.John Guineau
I installed the PPA - thanks Daniel!

While I do not see a black bar in the Displays control panel, after
restarting Unity (log out/log back in) , the launcher is on my primary
monitor.

hooray!

I'm afraid to run CCSM to set it to not dodge windows - last time I ran
CCSM in 11.10 it hosed Unity and I had to reset it to get it back... My
google'ing the CCSM stability sounded like it was not too safe to run in
11.10 yet. Is CCSM stable now?

Nice job!

[Bug 742544] Re: Launcher is shown on the wrong screen in some multi-monitor setups

2011-10-22 Thread W.John Guineau
This bug is driving me insane. It makes Unity almost unusable for me. I
have two large monitors (24) with my primary display directly in front
of me and the second one angled to the left.

I am very mouse-centric (I use very few keyboard shortcuts) and having
to twist my neck all the way to the left monitor and target the mouse
across two displays just to switch apps, which I do frequently (I am a
software developer and use multiple concurrent apps constantly), is
literally causing me neck pain!

Why can't I just drag the launcher to the top/left/middle of the entire
display surface? That is by far the most intuitive UI behavior and would
solve the launcher placement problem i a way that works for everyone.
In 10.04 I had the launcher on my primary display, which put it in the
middle of my total display surface. I set it in CCSM to not dodge
windows so it always just stayed visible. This was ideal for my
situation. 11.10 has seriously regressed in this regard.

I am trying hard to like Unity, but I am close to installing the gnome
shell and being done with it.
