[Bug 57562] Keystrokes lost in unlock dialog
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 56352 *** Public bug reported: Unlike (ahem) xscreensaver, gnome-screensaver loses any keystrokes you press before the password dialog comes up. If the screen is switched off, I usually press shift, pause a moment (probably on the order of half a second or less), then type in my password, without much attention to the state of the screen. This used to work fine with xscreensaver; I'm not entirely sure the fault is specifically with gnome-screensaver, or that my analysis of the cause is correct, but this started happening after I upgraded to Dapper. -- Nf sne nf gur pubvpr bs fperrafnire vf pbaprearq, vg jnf pyrneyl n qbjatenqr. ** Affects: gnome-screensaver (Ubuntu) Importance: Untriaged Status: Unconfirmed ** This bug has been marked a duplicate of bug 56352 Unlock dialog no longer pays attention to keypresses before it appears -- Keystrokes lost in unlock dialog https://launchpad.net/bugs/57562 -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

In xscreensaver, this bug has existed like forever. I used to see it a lot when my laptop's CMOS battery was failing and I had to tweak the time by hand every time I rebooted. [Bug 56352] Re: Unlock dialog no longer pays attention to keypresses before it appears
On a related note, the focus is also lost when you get Denied. So if you mistype your password and start typing it in again, typically the start of the password will be lost because the screensaver is doing random denied gyrations (bug #44263) instead of paying attention to the keyboard ... and you will be denied again! This is frustrating. Coincidentally, bug #37913 is vaguely at odds with this one; the reporter apparently finds it mildly confusing that the first, focus- grabbing keypress is entered into the password entry field too. -- Unlock dialog no longer pays attention to keypresses before it appears https://launchpad.net/bugs/56352 -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 41759] Re: Alien Glow effect crops too tightly
Just for clarification, this is with the Script-Fu Alpha to Logo Alien Glow thingy. I noticed there is another copy of it with slightly different parameters in Xtns Script-Fu Logos which seems to work just fine. It asks you to input the text and font to create the logo from, and creates an entirely new unnamed document. (It doesn't allow you to specify the radius of the glow, but calculates a suitable radius on the fly.) It appears that the erroneous procedure corresponds to the function script-fu-alien-glow-logo-alpha in /usr/share/gimp/2.0/scripts/alien- glow-logo.scm but I don't really pretend to understand how this works. If I'm correct then script-fu-alien-glow-logo without the -alpha suffix should be more correct, but from there, it's still not obvious to me what should be changed or where. -- Alien Glow effect crops too tightly https://launchpad.net/bugs/41759 -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 41759] Re: Alien Glow effect crops too tightly
It's a workaround, but I would still consider this a bug. I was in fact toying with the idea of changing the code so it doesn't crop. I'm not a seasoned Scheme hacker but it doesn't seem too hard at all. (a) change the core function so it accepts an additional parameter nocrop. For backward compatibility reasons, make this negated (nocrop rather than, say, crop) and optional. Make the cropping code conditional: (when (not nocrop) (... do it ...) (b) correspondingly change the user-friendly functions so that the alpha effect never crops, and the regular one does, just like before. -- Alien Glow effect crops too tightly https://launchpad.net/bugs/41759 -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 189900] [NEW] Workspace switcher confused by switching between compiz and metacity
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-panel This could be a problem in compiz, in metacity, or in the Gnome workspace switcher. When I initially installed Gutsy, I set myself up with 4 x 2 workspaces. Then I had to turn off Compiz (effectively switching to Metacity) because of bug 133118. At that point, Metacity ended up with a fairly weird workspace geometry, but all I had to do was right-click on the workspace switcher and configure it back to 4x2 (I think by telling it 8 workspaces, 2 rows) Now that 133118 is basically fixed, I switched back, and found myself with the opposite problem: there are ghost workspaces from metacity but compiz has this weird idea that there are 7 workspaces in a single row (even though the preferences have 8, I can only switch between 7 of them) and the workspace switcher displays another row underneath which I cannot switch to. Again, opening up the preferences and reconfiguring to 4x2 fixed this; but it would be neat if it worked without these haphazard artefacts (and also if the geometry was conceptualized the same way in both window managers, i.e. either rows x columns or number of workspaces in how many rows ... I think I prefer the former, as that doesn't have corner cases like you would have with 7 in 2 rows, or 8 in 3 rows). (Incidentally, I also have this on a different box where I use Sawfish as my preferred window manager; again, it uses a different facility for configuring the workspace and viewport geometry, which is not in sync with the Gnome workspace switcher.) [Bug 175078] Re: Standard error should remain empty under normal circumstances
I am still able to repro on a Hardy box, yes. I downloaded the codectest zip file. I removed the .rm and .swf files as well as wheeliesorensonvideo2cbr.mov (because I don't believe there are codecs for those; in any event, the codec installer buddy thingy can't suggest anything for those) and ran totem on the remaining files. This triggered a number of warnings immediately, and the codec buddy came up and suggested I install the bad codec set (gstreamer0.10 -plugins-bad 0.10.6-5). If the repro steps I posted before are not adequate, I'm frankly at loss here. Freshly installed system, download the codec test package, unzip, run totem on the extracted files. [Bug 159130] Re: Interactive codec installer should not require restart of Totem
Clarification: the codec is missing, but it would be nice if either (a) Totem, or the codec installer thing, would tell me that I need to restart Totem in order for things to work; or (b) even better, if no restart was required. I will update the bug description a little bit more. ** Description changed: Binary package hint: totem I am revisiting this bug after several months, and want to add a high- level summary. - The overall process was: get an error message dialog, do what the - program guides me through doing in order to resolve the problem, assume - things would be fixed now, be miffed they were not. Restarting didn't - fix anything the first time, just threw me into a second loop of the - same stuff. Finally, only after yet another restart, things were - working. There was no indication at any point that a restart would be - helpful; it's just something I happened to stumble into. + The overall process was: when trying to play a video clip, for which the + required codecs are not available, get an error message dialog, + suggesting the installation of a codec package. I selected a different color but kept the 150-pixel radius ... Notice how as the last step, the plug-in effect crops the image to much smaller than it was ... Just to quantify the problem a bit, several of the program descriptions in the Startup Programs (default) tab in the Sessions Preferences dialog are too long to display. On a default 8.10 install with a 1680x1050 screen resolution, 9 of the 20 Startup Programs have too long descriptions and are truncated with an ellipsis (and 7 have a description saying No description, and would perhaps be too long if they had a proper description, though there is overlap -- GNOME Settings Daemon Helper has its label truncated at He... and No description). ** Attachment added: Screen shot of System - Preferences - Sessions dialog http://launchpadlibrarian.net/19831104/Screenshot-Sessions%20Preferences.png -- gnome-session-properties window is very small and can't be resized https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/278964 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 146918] Re: Poor descriptions for some applications in Startup Programs window
Thanks for pitching in here! Allow me to comment on a few of your suggestions, though. As a general comment, these are applications which are started when your session is initiated. Many of them are infrastructure, daemon-type programs which do not directly expose a user interface. Therefore I find it slightly problematic to describe them in terms of what the user can do. GNOME accessibility - Arrange alternative interaction devices I'd also be hesitant to coin new names for existing components. Users who know what AT-SPI is might be annoyed to find it renamed to something novel. In order to cover this legacy issue, at a minimum I'd like to keep the old name in the description somewhere. How about GNOME AT-SPI Accessibility - Enable alternative input and output devices Evolution alarm notifier - Configure advanced alarm clock features (is this correct?) I think they fixed this one already; the current one is IMHO clearer and more correct. GNOME keyring - Manage authentication for your GPG encryption keys I'm at loss to the relationship between Seahorse and the GNOME Keyring. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GNOME_Keyring says Seahorse should replace the old keyring altogether. If that's the case, it will handle both SSH and GPG keys. In any event, this component does manage them from the system's perspective, but it's more of a daemon for interconnecting the key store with applications, if I understand any of this at all. Maybe this description is fine; I'm just thinking out loud here. GNOME login sound - Configure system sounds To the best of my understanding, this one merely plays the sound; you configure it elsewhere. GNOME Login Sound - Play the login chime GNOME settings - Manage computer configurations GNOME settings helper - Automatically manage computer configurations (is this correct?) I'm sorry, I'm not really comfortable with this. I don't understand this (see my comments above) but in any event, I believe this manages only the core GNOME configuration, i.e. basically what you can manipulate with gconftool. Most of what users want to configure is handled elsewhere. GNOME splash screen - Change startup screen graphics Again, like with the login sound, this one just executes, doesn't configure. Indicator applet - Configure notifications for system Do you genuinely understand what this one does? Could you point to some documentation? Is this the new notification thingamajig? Why does it require a separate startup process in order to add something to the panel, anyway? Network manager - Connect to a computer network Power manager - Change power settings Again, these run a service which enable you to do these things, but do not directly expose a user interface. Maybe I'm too picky; maybe these are fine. Finally, I vaguely think the Name field should perhaps be in Title Case, like most of the existing entries. Thanks again for coming up with a good proposal. [Bug 226216] Re: Clock applet consistently displays different timezone after reboot
I'm still seeing this on a laptop running Jaunty. I have for a long time observed that my time zone gets reset to Europe/Mariehamn. The speculation that this might depend on access to wireless during boot might be significant sounds like it could fit my situation, too, although I have not been paying close attention to that aspect so far (I rarely reboot anyway; I'd guess this might also be related to wireless availability on wake up from suspend / hibernate as well, or instead). [Bug 16285] Re: time-admin: User-selected time zone will not stick (for some locations)
In http://git.gnome.org./cgit/gnome-system-tools/tree/src/time/time- tool.c the function oobs_time_config_get_timezone is used to populate the GUI. This appears to use the functions from System Tools Backends to actually obtain the current time zone. Now, my understanding of the relationships and dependencies is far from perfect, but I was able to read and roughly understand the code in Time::TimeDate.pm -- it basically compares your /etc/localtime to the available time zone files, and (duh) reports the first match. But why doesn't it simply read my /etc/timezone? jaunty$ perl -I/usr/share/system-tools-backends-2.0/scripts -MTime::TimeDate -MUtils::File \ -le 'print Time::TimeDate::get_timezone(/etc/localtime, /usr/share/zoneinfo)' Europe/Mariehamn jaunty$ cat /etc/timezone Europe/Helsinki jaunty$ ls -l /etc/localtime /usr/share/zoneinfo/Europe/{Helsinki,Mariehamn} -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1883 2009-07-04 22:07 /etc/localtime -rw-r--r-- 2 root root 1883 2009-06-18 19:15 /usr/share/zoneinfo/Europe/Helsinki -rw-r--r-- 2 root root 1883 2009-06-18 19:15 /usr/share/zoneinfo/Europe/Mariehamn jaunty$ md5sum /etc/localtime /usr/share/zoneinfo/Europe/{Helsinki,Mariehamn} a2a75461ac17557cba12a846a564e467 /etc/localtime a2a75461ac17557cba12a846a564e467 /usr/share/zoneinfo/Europe/Helsinki a2a75461ac17557cba12a846a564e467 /usr/share/zoneinfo/Europe/Mariehamn Thus, the following locations exhibit the problem: jaunty$ grep -v '^#' /usr/share/zoneinfo/zone.tab | cut -sf3 | perl -I/usr/share/system-tools-backends-2.0/scripts -MTime::TimeDate -MUtils::File -lne ' $a = $_; $tz = Time::TimeDate::get_timezone(/usr/share/zoneinfo/$_, /usr/share/zoneinfo); print $a != $tz unless ($a eq $tz)' Antarctica/South_Pole != Antarctica/McMurdo Europe/Helsinki != Europe/Mariehamn Europe/Guernsey != Europe/London America/Guadeloupe != America/St_Barthelemy Europe/Zagreb != Europe/Sarajevo Europe/Isle_of_Man != Europe/London Europe/Jersey != Europe/London Europe/Podgorica != Europe/Sarajevo America/Marigot != America/St_Barthelemy Europe/Skopje != Europe/Sarajevo Europe/Belgrade != Europe/Sarajevo Europe/Ljubljana != Europe/Sarajevo Arctic/Longyearbyen != Europe/Oslo Europe/Bratislava != Europe/Prague Europe/San_Marino != Europe/Rome America/Shiprock != America/Denver Europe/Vatican != Europe/Rome As predicted by this list, I was able to reproduce for Longyearbyen and Jersey as well, and would expect the rest of the list to reprodce this problem as well. [Bug 146918] Re: Poor descriptions for some applications in Startup Programs window
I'm not entirely happy with the new description for Update Notifier: Check for available updates automatically. The wording is somewhat verbose (why would it check for unavailable updates, and how? Why is this automatically? I think I kind of know why you put it there, but is it really necessary?) but above all, if you don't know what sorts of updates, how would you find out? Both of the proposals above are IMHO more informative. Martin Albisetti wrote on 2009-07-02: Update notifier - Notifies you of system updates Andruk wrote on 2009-07-02: Update notifier - Notify about application updates Check for software updates from Ubuntu and other software sources, though a bit long, might approach some sort of synthesis. Although I criticize the details of his wording, I think Michael Vogt's proposal captures the essence of the discussion so far; describe what functionality will stop working if you uncheck it. After all, that's what this dialog box is meant for. Hence, perhaps Bluetooth Manager could be something like Discover Bluetooth devices within range and Network Manager perhaps something along the lines of Discover and connect to networks (by implication, Internet connections; perhaps that could somehow be worked into the description still). -- Poor descriptions for some applications in Startup Programs window https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/146918 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 231034] Re: desktop freeze when moving emacs in workspace switcher
Lincoln: can you be a little bit more specific? If you disable the AT stuff in the Session manager, does that cause the problem to go away? (System - Preferences - Sessions - Startup Programs tab -- the ones which seem relevant are the AT-SPI Registry Wrapper [no idea what it does, but AT-SPI is the accessibility voodoo], and Visual Assistance. I would place my bets on the first one.) -- desktop freeze when moving emacs in workspace switcher https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/231034 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to metacity in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 146918] Re: poor descriptions for some startup programs
This may seem like a feeble accomplishment, but I managed to find out what AT-SPI means, and so might be able to figure out what AT-SPI Registry Wrapper means. According to http://accessibility.kde.org/developer/atk.php#coreclasses AT-SPI is Assistive Technology Service Provider Interface and there are also descriptions of the architecture etc. Funny that an accessibility / usability component would make the mistake of having a name which is completely undecipherable to the uninitiated, and no description (as of 8.10). /usr/lib/gnome-session/helpers/at-spi-registryd-wrapper and the corresponding /usr/share/gnome/autostart/at-spi-registryd- wrapper.desktop are in the gnome-session package, so marking as New for gnome-session (or should I Be Bold and mark as Confirmed?) My proposed fix would be to add the English description Framework for applications to interact with assistive technologies. I would be tempted to say Gnome applications or even GTK+ applications but ironically, the usability folks tend to shoot down anything which involves a technical acronym (but then the name field is barely anything but a technical acronym). ** Changed in: gnome-session (Ubuntu) Status: Invalid = New -- poor descriptions for some startup programs https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/146918 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 146918] Re: poor descriptions for some startup programs
There's a bunch of weird things in Startup Programs in Session Preferences in Intrepid. Should I post them here, or create a new bug? This bug report is rather unwieldy as it is, so perhaps it would be better to create a new one for Intrepid. I never got a reply, so at least I'm enumerating here what I think is wrong. (Format is Name[en] - Description[en] - my comments.) AT SPI Registry Wrapper - No description - noted above Bluetooth Manager - Bluetooth Manager applet - package bluez-gnome, adding New The description is completely redundant after you remove applet which as noted elsewhere in this bug report is not recommended. Please describe what it does for the user. Suggest Enable wireless connections to Bluetooth devices such as mobile phones or some such. (Too long, admittedly, but then maybe the UI should be changed to accommodate longer descriptions.) Evolution Alarm Notifier - Evolution Alarm Notifier - noted above GNOME Keyring Daemon Wrapper - No description - package gnome- session, should have a description. Allow applications to access the keyring perhaps? GNOME Login Sound - No description - I guess we can live with this :-) Or should it say Boing bling thud ksh? GNOME Settings Daemon - No description - package gnome-settings- daemon, adding New. Manage your GNOME session's settings maybe? GNOME Settings Daemon Helper - No description - now this I think has a more fundamental problem. Are there situations where you would want to run the helper but not the daemon itself, or vice versa? Should that be expressed as a preference in the daemon's settings somewhere instead then? IMHO this is exposing an implementation boundary which should not be exposed to the user. GNOME Splash Screen - No description - gnome-session. As with the sound above I guess, not really crucial to describe. Network Manager - Network Manager applet - as per Gabor Kelemen's comment above, already fixed upstream PulseAudio Session Manager - Load module-x11-xsmp into PulseAudio - package pulseaudio-module-x11, adding New. Wayyy too technical description. Window Manager - No description - package gnome-session. I can't help but think this is also a detail which normal users would never want control over. ** Also affects: network-manager via http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=559636 Importance: Unknown Status: Unknown ** Also affects: bluez-gnome (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Also affects: pulseaudio (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Also affects: gnome-settings-daemon (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- poor descriptions for some startup programs https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/146918 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
