Public bug reported:
Binary package hint: gtk2-engines
Running any recent version of pidgin, for example 2.5.5 crashes almost
instantly when starting an IM in the clearlooks theme. If I change the
theme from clearlooks to human, say, this problem goes away.

Boot logging using bootlogd does not work in jaunty so I have attached
/var/log/dmesg instead.

OK here is the update.
After the poweroff and restart the Toshiba logo comes up (it's a Toshiba
Tecra A9) and then it goes straight to booting linux without ever
showing the grub menu as described above.
However, it seems that grub IS actually running invisibly when the
Toshiba logo is showing

A fix/workaround is to upgrade to grub 2. I have just tested this and
it works.
This is not exactly user friendly at present as I had to edit menu.lst

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager
On my toshiba tecra a9 laptop in jaunty/gnome with all updates applied,
the shutdown option appears to actually suspend or hibernate. I am
guessing this is what happens as grub doesn't load when you resume the
computer.

For the sake of clarity I should say that I clicked on the power icon in
the top right and chose shutdown from the drop down menu.

My apologies but I got this wrong. It neither hibernates nor suspends it
seems. However, before we close this bug, why doesn't it load grub after
a shutdown where it does with a restart for example?

The power icon in the far top right on the gnome panel is the one I am
referring to. When I click on it I have the following options
Guest session, lock session, Log Out, Suspend, Hibernate, Restart,
Shutdown
This is the first install of linux on this laptop.
Best wishes,

'shutdown -h now' shows the shutdown behaviour I describe above. That is
grub does not load when I start up the computer afterwards.
'shutdown -r now' loads grub .
