even in trunk. Maybe the application was deprecated by some debain
maintainer?

It seems that your fix made gnome's behaviour more inconsistent than
necessary (as described in the last commets on LP#157398) ... could you
consider just reverting the fix

I'm currently looking into http://svn.gnome.org/viewvc/gnome-settings-

Judging from the code:
Basically Gnome uses the dpi value xorg reports when
I found the porblem.
All distributions which provide the file /var/lib/gconf/debian.defaults
/%gconf-tree.xml override the detection of the right dpi.
Patch is being made.

After talking to seb128 on #ubuntu-desktop, it's now clear that the
hardcoding of 96 dpi was due to this bug
https://launchpad.net/bugs/118745 many people had during the Gutsy dev
time frame.
In my opinion that workaround should be removed again, because
a) hardware detection has improved a lot,
The whole situation could be compared to the bash-dash transition.
People were upset about it and complained, but the transition has been made.
Either we do the transition or we wait until 2050 when all displays
report nicely to xorg.
What has to be done imo is the following:
- Remove that
Looks like this was fixed Jaunty Alpha 4, let's see how that works

To save space, I normally set Ubuntu's top panel to auto-hide.
But the bad defaults make it necessary that I have run gconf-editor to make the

@NoOp: I sent a patch some time ago to the gnome developers, adjusting
the standard settings regarding autohide size, hide/unhide delay to sane
values. This patch was included, so for most people the obvious symptoms
are fixed.
But I would suggest leaving this bug open here as a reminder, until

gnome-panel doesn't hide all the way
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/218982
Public bug reported:
Binary package hint: gnome-panel
I have panels on the top and the left. Both are set to auto-hide with a hidden
size of 1 pixel.
When I move my mouse over the top panel reappears, but the left panel won't.
It has worked in 9.10, but does not work in an up-to-date Lucid.

edgy-gdm-theme
feisty-gdm-theme

mythbuntu-gdm-theme
Thanks Philip.
Ok, sounds good.
Additionally I would suggest adding a small note to the description which
mentions that:
a) these themes are for an old version of gdm
b) don't work with the newer gdm and
c) the new gdm has no theming options at the moment (so that people can stop
