[Bug 269441] Re: Trash always full

2019-12-16 Thread thom
I can confirm that this bug is still in ubuntu-mate (version 19.10).

when unmounting external drives without emptying trash, the trash icon
stays on "full" forever (until the next login)

Expected behaviour would be a re-evaluation of the trash state of the
mounted devices after any mount/unmount of any drive

This papercut has reached the respectable age of 11 years which, of
course, is getting a bit embarrassing. :-)

I don't know where the trashcan code hides (somewhere in caja ?)
I might try to give it a shot if I knew more. Tips anyone ?

[Bug 574050] Re: gstreamer detects HDV video and can play but causes totem / pitivi problems

A bit of a shameful move to expire this bug because the problem still exists

[Bug 937822] Re: [precise] F10 always opens the menu, cannot be overriden (after xkeyboard-config update)

2013-04-04 Thread thom
More than a year later this bug is still very prominent in Ubuntu 12.04 LTS.
Half a year ago a fix was committed but hasn't reached the repositories yet ???
(not even in proposed or backports)

If this turns out to be a won't fix/can't fix for 12.04 situation it might
be wise to adopt the following workaround officially
(since it is better than nothing at all):

#-
mkdir -p ~/.config/gtk-3.0
catEOF ~/.config/gtk-3.0/gtk.css

@binding-set NoKeyboardNavigation {
 unbind shiftF10
}

* {
 gtk-key-bindings: NoKeyboardNavigation

bug is media container independent.

reproduceable: always
load a videoclip in PiTiVi
render with the audiosettings: Raw Audio

PiTiVi response:
There have been errors with Gstreamer

expected behaviour:
a resulting mediacontainerfile with 1 stream video and 1 stream PCM audio

what happened instead:
a resulting mediacontainerfile with 1 stream video and no audio

type of bug:
kind of a showstopper for PiTiVi users who work with serious/semi-pro/pro media
formats

comment:
most amateur/semi-pro/pro recordings are in DV-video, interlaced, AVI-container
with 2 channel 48kHz signed 16 bit low-endian audio (AKA raw audio).
they prefer to keep this also as intermediate format to keep quality
degradation to a minimum, also it is the defacto standard worldwide for video
interchange.

At the moment PiTiVi is the only non linear editor that can do
multitracking with continuous envelope shaping (mixing) AND has a
remarkable stability AND is lightweight AND a fast pace working flow.

nasty workaround:
load a videoclip in PiTiVi
render with the audiosettings: FLAC/48kHz/16bit/2ch
(use a suitable container for thatlike mkv)
use ffmpeg -i $VIDEO_IN -vcodec copy -acodec pcm_s16le -ac 2 -ar 48000 -f avi
$VIDEO_OUT

[Bug 629258] Re: Battery life estimation never comes around

2010-10-26 Thread Thom Philips
Brian, you are amazing!

I've been through some early and difficult linux installs, many flavors,
a few savers.

Ubuntu has really been getting the hardware.

This is the deal changer for me and the growing amount of people I
convince to leave ms while they clutch at it with insecurity.

This first piece of hardware that's not recognized is either the deal
breaker or the many hour challenge for the tech.

Your power percentage is a sweet swirl of frosting on the cake. They
will eat cake too ;-)

I added your repository to the sources in synaptic, reloaded, then
marked install for the generic kernal header and update for the
(replacement) gnome-power-manager from you and whalla!

A working percentage display when clicking on the battery icon.

[Bug 664239] [NEW] [maverick] window and buttons very wide in dutch locale

Public bug reported:

Distribution: Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat Desktop i386

The dutch translation for undo (Ongedaan maken) seems to make the
buttons very wide.

this sizes the calculator to approxiately 1300x340 (wxh) which makes it
a bit of a hassle to use on my 1024x768 screen (since there is no way to

[Bug 191889] Re: [MASTER] [WORKAROUND] Offline Mode feature fails to detect proper online state for networks that are managed outside of network manager.

2008-07-10 Thread Thom Pischke
A firefox fix will be nice (using Kristian's extension now), but what
about pidgin and the other apps consulting network manager?

I don't much care HOW this gets fixed, but I hope to see a no-user-
action-required fix come through soon, for all apps. I just wasted 2
hours trying to figure out why I had a nice modem connection through
gnome-ppp but no internet in my apps before I finally stumbled onto this
issue.

Definitely an embarassing bug for an LTS release.

[Bug 132833] Re: login background color is hardcoded

2007-10-25 Thread thom
Hi there,

Most of the solutions here just obscure the bug, Sebastien Bacher is right in
this.
The reason that the camelcolor appears is the wrong usage of gdmflexiserver.

The gdmflexiserver -a (authenticate) should be a more direct approach to the
real reason that we all seem to get the camelcolor screen.
For me it does not make a difference, here is my ~/.xserver-error log (set -x)
and see what (not) happens:

Pay particular attention to:
--
Refusing to initialize GTK+.

[Bug 151145] Re: Evince print fails with Postscript driver

2007-10-17 Thread Thom Pischke
Seeing something very similar here. Have three ubuntu laptops, one
running as a print server with feisty, and two clients running gutsy.
After upgrade to gutsy, printing PDFs works very poorly. I've only
manage to print one PDF since upgrading, and I managed that only by
sending the job from the server itself running feisty.

When sending jobs from a laptop running gutsy, the job just hangs in the
Queue. Sometimes the printer light blinks to show it's processing a
document, sometimes not. Either way, nothing seems to ever come out.

I have managed to print non-pdf data.

I tried acrobat reader, more or less the same problem. Certainly the
same result: Can't print PDFs.

I have an HP Laserjet 1320 and use the PostScript driver.

[Bug 148291] Re: Unable to start the settings manager 'gnome-settings-daemon'.

2007-10-06 Thread Thom Pischke
That seemed to work. Updated, uncommented the Synaptics entry in
xorg.conf and rebooted -- This time login proceeded without any
gllitches. Of course, the mouse cursor now moves slow as molasses with
the touchpad now when it was fast before, but that's a different issue,
and a minor one.

Thanks!

2007-10-04 Thread Thom Pischke
Posted again here:

The program 'gnome-settings-daemon' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadValue (integer parameter out of range for operation)'.
  (Details: serial 1600 error_code 2 request_code 146 minor_code 35)
  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)

2007-10-04 Thread Thom Pischke
Given all the mouse configuration references in the stacktrace, and
having read somewhere about someone having a similar problem being
caused by a bug with their touchpad, I tried commenting out the
Synaptics touchpad entries in xorg.conf.

Lo and behold, the gnome-settings-daemon problem goes away. Unexpectly,
the touchpad still works. Maybe there is some sort of fallback driver
for the touchpad that does not cause the crash.

The program 'gnome-settings-daemon' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadValue (integer parameter out of range for operation)'.

  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line

[Bug 147150] Mixed-mode CDs not automounted nor hinted for mounting

2007-09-30 Thread thom
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-volume-manager

Ubuntu 7.04 Feisty Fawn

Thank you for giving the opportunity to file a bug, also thanks for the
best distro around :-)

I would like to report a minor bug:
Upon inserting any CD the Gnome automounter mounts or prompts for action.
There is one exception; a mixed mode CD does not invoke any action.
It is possible however to manually mount the CD from the commandline.

I tested this with a CD of an old (windows) game called MORTYR.

A program like k3b does prompts with a question whether to mount the CD as a
data CD or handle it like an audio CD.
The automounter, as described, does not.

Yours sincerely, Tom

2007-04-06 Thread Thom Pischke
I have the same problem trying to connect to a Samba Share running on a
fresh feisty Xubuntu install.

What I did:
 1. Fresh install of Xubuntu on server
 2. Set up a SMB Share via Shared Folders
 3. Add users via smbpasswd
 4. Attempt to open the shared folder on either of two other laptops running
feisty

In all cases, I can see the shared folder in nautilus, but attempt to
open it result in The contents of the folder could not be displayed

Checking logs shows some sort of Permissions Error

NFS sharing works fine, though mounting is sometimes slow (30 seconds)

SMB sharing from the two Ubuntu (not Xubuntu) laptops also works fine.
It only fails with Xubuntu.

[Bug 67443] Re: Progress bar is invisible

2007-01-18 Thread Thom Pischke
This appears to have been related to a bad X Server / Graphics Card
setup.

The problem appeared after running dpkg-reconfigure to try to correct
resolution for an ATI 3D Rage IIC Video Card. Ubuntu by default was
refusing to run at 1024x768, allowing only 800x600. When trying to
correct this, at some point the progress bar stopped displaying
correctly.

When I switched from the 'vesa' driver to the 'ati' driver, set
resolution to 1024x768, and Color Depth to 16 bit, I finally got X at
1024x768 with normal progress bars. So problem solved for me.
