[Bug 1877288] [NEW] Text in top bar is scaled wrong

2020-05-07 Thread Øyvind Skaaden
Public bug reported:

## What is the bug
When upgradig to Ubuntu 20.04, it also updated Gnome to 3.36.1.
When using my ultrawide (and configuring it via xrandr because the gnome config
tool does not work properly) the top bar is behaving strange.
When no windows are open, the top bar "Activities" are showing correctly, but
when opening a window, the text and hitbox doubles in height. The part with the
tray icons and power/internet etc is wrong all the time. See attached image.

## What happened
Text and open programs field double the bar height. Also affects the tray area.

## What did you expect to happen
Normal height on top bar.

[Bug 1645631] Re: Sending files fails because obex not loaded

2017-05-02 Thread Øyvind Stegard
Thanks for reporting, I was just struck by this bug on 17.04.

For a fix which lasts across reboots, run as normal user:
systemctl --user enable obex

This permanently enables OBEX service for your user sessions.

[Bug 1271591] Re: upstart job race prevents gnome-keyring from being ssh agent

2014-04-07 Thread Øyvind Stegard
I have chosen to unlock my GPG key at login time. In processes launched
by Unity, I sometimes get the GPG_AGENT_INFO environment variable set,
but other times (in other login sessions) not. So likely some kind of
race. From terminal launched with Ctrl+Alt+T, the variable always seems
to be available. (Emacs, which I usually launch from Unity, needs this
variable to connect to gpg agent.)

Fully updated 14.04 and clean installation.

[Bug 1253096] [NEW] Cannot add IRC account with NickServ password

2013-11-20 Thread Øyvind Stegard
Public bug reported:

In accounts settings:

1. Add new IRC account (I tested Freenode), input nick and hit done.

2. Things seem ok, it connects in Empathy (even though the Empathy
   connection button in accounts dialog isn't enabled yet, which is surprising.)

3. I have a registered nick at Freenode, so I need to provide password
   for NickServ at login. Hit edit options in accounts dialog and input
   a password, then hit done.

4. Now the access trouble starts (and Empathy disconnects).

[Bug 1247564] [NEW] Initial window size slightly too small causing scaling+smoothing on image

2013-11-03 Thread Øyvind Stegard
Public bug reported:

When opening an image that is medium sized, but still much smaller
than screen resolution, eog sizes its window initially slightly too
small, causing scaling and consequently smoothing to be applied to the
image. This makes crisp images like figures, diagrams etc. look
unnecessarily blurred (and bad) at first sight. Increasing eog window
size a little fixes it so that the image is displayed 1:1 (pixel
perfect). Pressing Ctrl+0 also fixes the initial sizing of the image.

I see no way to turn off Best fit option by default in prefs. That
would probably fix it for smaller images, but is unpractical for larger
ones, where scaling is desireable.

Attached source image and screenshot of initial eog window (untouched)
shows the problem. My screen resolution is 1920x1200 and the source
image is 640x480, so it should not have been scaled by eog on first
display.

[Bug 760344] Re: gvfsd-http not closing tcp connections

2013-07-12 Thread Øyvind Stegard
Confirming this bug in 13.04 – I just discovered it five minutes ago.
There is a gvfsd-http process that has lots of stale outgoing TCP
connections in CLOSE-WAIT-state. All connections have some data in the
receive queue and nothing in send.

I did use Rhythmbox a few days ago. Dst-addresses look like Canonical
and music store stuff (they do not reverse-resolve, but Google revealed
Canonical and 7digital, etc).

tcp1  0 192.168.10.80:40376 199.27.76.184:80CLOSE_WAIT
2824/gvfsd-http

The connections are definitely old, since the source IP is not even my
current one.

[Bug 1067515] Re: Locking from user menu fails second time (gnome-screensaver SimulateUserActivity() doesn't return)

2013-03-14 Thread Øyvind Stegard
The following dbus calls seem to no longer work (e.g. screensaver is not
deactivated or timeout reset):
$ dbus-send --session --type=method_call  --dest=org.gnome.ScreenSaver /
org.gnome.ScreenSaver.SimulateUserActivity
$ dbus-send --session --type=method_call  --dest=org.gnome.ScreenSaver
/org/gnome/ScreenSaver org.gnome.ScreenSaver.SimulateUserActivity

(two different object paths, since it looks like object path has changed
to /, at least according to d-feet dbus debugger).

Also, xdg-screensaver suspend wid does not seem to work either. It
uses the second call above to keep screensaver from activating.

gnome-screensaver 3.6.0-0ubuntu2.1, Ubuntu 12.10.

Does the SimulateUserActivity work for anyone else ? I cannot figure out
what's wrong.

You need to do a killall gnome-terminal or start new gnome terminal
with --disable-factory before testing. The new binary isn't actually
loaded, but just spawns a new window in the already running (old)
binary, due to gnome-terminal using factory.

[Bug 1075923] Re: nautilus hangs copying large directories from a samba share

2013-03-01 Thread Øyvind Stegard
Confirmed here too. Having trouble using 12.10 gvfs SMB client talking
to an Ubuntu 12.10 Samba server. Stalls when copying directory
structures to server. There is gigabit networking between nodes.

smbstatus on server displays one locked file at the point of hang:
Locked files:
Pid  UidDenyMode   Access  R/WOplock
SharePath   Name   Time
--
305871000   DENY_NONE  0x120196WRONLY NONE
/some/share   some-file.123   Fri Mar  1 09:37:27 2013

When hang occurs, the only remedy is to kill smb-related gvfs-processes.

What a regression .. :/

autofs + CIFS kernel module is probably a better bet stability and
performance-wise.

[Bug 648158] Re: Screen not locked when coming out of suspend/hibernate

This has been a problem for me through multiple Ubuntu releases and

the screen must be locked manually before suspending. Feels like a race
condition problem during suspend.

2010-05-28 Thread Øyvind Stegard
This bug has been fixed upstream in [currently unreleased] brasero
2.30.2. Ubuntu 10.04 currently has brasero 2.30.1, I think it should be
updated in Ubuntu. The patch that fixes this specific problem is also
back-portable to earlier brasero releases (according to upstream
developer), including 2.30.1.

[Bug 359933] [NEW] Logout dialog does not offer option to only log out

2009-04-12 Thread Øyvind Stegard
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

(default Logout action keyboard shortcut), it does *not* actually
offer the option to only log out and end the session.

[Bug 359933] Re: Logout dialog does not offer option to only log out

2009-04-12 Thread Øyvind Stegard
Yes, sorry, the dialog belongs to gnome-session.

I'd like to point out a minor inconsistency with this change:
When configuring keyboard shortcuts using gnome-keybinding-properties, the
associated action for Ctrl+Alt+Del is labeled Logout. This is no longer true,
since this action does not offer the option to log out. It should be renamed to
something else, like Shutdown. I'll report this as a new bug.

I'm staying current with Jaunty beta. Using Compiz.

The Log out keyboard action invokes the same dialog that appears when

Can't believe this problem is worse than ever in Intrepid :(
Adjusting the volume of my Creative Xmod through the normal Gnome mixer

everywhere, channels un-linking, etc. And now it even affects the Intel
HDA sound card on my motherboard. Why is priority set to low ? It makes
hardware volume control from Gnome/GStreamer useless.

[Bug 39328] Re: Offer option to disable scroll wheel on task list

2008-08-18 Thread Øyvind Jensen
I landed here when I was googling for a way to turn off the mousewheel
control of the workspace-switcher. I am using a laptop and the sudden
workspace shifting is pretty annoying. Since it seems there is no way

To disable all scrolling as suggested by Cheshirecat86, is not a good
alternative as most applications make very good use of the mouse wheel.

[Bug 203782] Re: vinagre should support low colour (color) depth, encodings

2008-08-01 Thread Øyvind Stegard
Joining in, too. Vinagre is so slow, something must be wrong with the
implementation and/or design choices internally. I'm currently running
Vinagre connected to a *local* VNC-session (TightVNC-server) on a brand
new quad-core 2.5GHz system with 4GB RAM, and guess what.. IT'S SLOW.
Sad, really, because I like how I can manage multiple sessions in
Vinagre, and the better desktop integration it provides.

[Bug 215484] Re: g-p-m does not honor its configuration for LCD brightness levels after multiple unplug-replug from AC

2008-07-31 Thread Øyvind Stegard
I'm the lucky owner of a Lenovo Thinkpad Z61m, and when I use the Dim
display when idle feature, my screen will gradually get darker and
darker for every time it kicks in. After a while I must manually
increase the brightness again, to get it back to the level it should be
at. Ubuntu Hardy 32bit.

[Bug 252796] Re: gvfs-fuse-daemon process not killed on logout and not re-used on login

2008-07-29 Thread Øyvind Stegard
Downgrading to:

$ ls -1 *gvfs*.deb
gvfs_0.2.5-0ubuntu1_i386.deb
gvfs-backends_0.2.5-0ubuntu1_i386.deb
gvfs-bin_0.2.5-0ubuntu1_i386.deb
gvfs-fuse_0.2.5-0ubuntu1_i386.deb
libgvfscommon0_0.2.5-0ubuntu1_i386.deb

does not solve the problem of remaining gvfs-fuse-daemon processes after
logout. Also, the daemons need to be terminated (kill -9), regular kill
does not work. So I guess this problem has crept in someplace else, and
that I didn't notice it until recently..

[Bug 252796] [NEW] gvfs-fuse-daemon process not killed on logout and not re-used on login

2008-07-28 Thread Øyvind Stegard
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gvfs-fuse

I'm getting lots of useless gvfs-fuse-daemon processes hanging around
after a few logout/login cycles. Funny thing is that it used to be a
problem that this daemon died a little too often, now it's very much the
opposite :). Anyways, I *think* it started after the last gvfs-update,
but I am not sure of that.

Here's what I've got installed (hardy-proposed enabled):
$ dpkg -l '*gvfs*' | grep ii
ii  gvfs   0.2.5-0ubuntu2
  userspace virtual filesystem - server
ii  gvfs-backends  0.2.5-0ubuntu2
  userspace virtual filesystem - backends
ii  gvfs-bin   0.2.5-0ubuntu2
  userspace virtual filesystem - binaries
ii  gvfs-fuse  0.2.5-0ubuntu2
  userspace virtual filesystem - fuse server
ii  libgvfscommon0 0.2.5-0ubuntu2
  userspace virtual filesystem - library

And here's the result after three login/logout cycles:
$ ps -ef | grep gvfs-fuse
oyvind6511 1  0 03:24 ?00:00:00 /usr/lib/gvfs//gvfs-fuse-daemon
/home/oyvind/.gvfs
oyvind   10685 1  0 04:43 ?00:00:00 /usr/lib/gvfs//gvfs-fuse-daemon
/home/oyvind/.gvfs
oyvind   11139 1  0 04:44 ?00:00:00 /usr/lib/gvfs//gvfs-fuse-daemon
/home/oyvind/.gvfs
oyvind   11770 11336  0 04:52 pts/000:00:00 grep gvfs-fuse

The problem happens on two entirely different machines: this laptop and
a completely new and clean Ubuntu 8.04.1 install with hardy-proposed
enabled and a clean home directory.

[Bug 241562] [NEW] Latest gvfs-update in hardy-proposed causes huge IO-lags

2008-06-20 Thread Øyvind Stegard
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gvfs

This update:

gvfs (0.2.4-0ubuntu2) hardy-proposed; urgency=low

  * debian/patches/80_samba_browsing_authentification.patch:
 - gnome bugzilla change to allow shares when authentification is required,
   the code try anonymous connections before asking for a password though
   so it doesn't solve the case where anonymous and login are authorized
   but give access to different ressources, see comments on
   http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=524485 for references
   (lp: #207072)

causes huge problems for me. The gnome-panel takes close to a minute to appear
after login, the save file download dialog in Firefox takes ~30 seconds to
appear, and there are lags/hangs in general. I had to revert the the previous
version of gvfs in hardy-updates, which fixes all these problems.

[Bug 241562] Re: Latest gvfs-update in hardy-proposed causes huge IO-lags

2008-06-20 Thread Øyvind Stegard
I didn't to anything special to trigger it. But I have my laptop at
work, and there's a machine here with the same hostname as my server at
home. The server at home has Samba running, but I suspect the one here
at work does not, and maybe there's some hang because gvfs tries to
contact it, authorize or whatever behind the scenes, but obviously does
not get a reply. I'm at work, currently, so cannot spend more time on
this now, but can help in debugging later.

[Bug 241562] Re: Latest gvfs-update in hardy-proposed causes huge IO-lags

2008-06-20 Thread Øyvind Stegard
Of course, I will try to help in figuring this one out.

Here's some info about my setup:
I've got a bookmarked Samba-share in Nautilus like this:

smb://gandalf/
This share requires password-authentication.

The hostname resolves to 192.168.1.2 (the local IP-adress of the Samba-
server on my LAN).

The problem occurs because of a difference in behaviour between this new
gvfs-release and the previous: now it immediately connects to the share
(I've checked with netstat) upon login, even though I don't actively
click the bookmark in Nautilus. When gvfs or Nautilus tries to do this
at work (when I log in), it hangs, and causes other desktop components
to hang as well, such as the panel, file open dialogs, etc. There's no
Samba-server with IP 192.168.1.2 at work.

So, should it be trying to connect/authenticate to Samba-shares that are
bookmarked in Nautilus but not opened by the user ? This is doomed to
cause problems for roaming users with laptops, like myself, that use
different servers, depending on location.

If I remove the Samba-share bookmark in Nautilus, it stops trying to
connect immediately upon login to Gnome desktop. That would resolve my
problem with hangs at work, but it does mean that I can no longer
bookmark unavailable SMB-servers in Nautilus without problems.

I fixed my Google account password in the Gnome keyring through Seahorse, and
now the Picasa Web export from F-spot works fine. The point is, F-spot or the

[Bug 239437] [NEW] Nautilus slows to a crawl when opening a folder with images and zoom level is 100%

2008-06-12 Thread Øyvind Stegard
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

If I open a folder in Nautilus containing, say, 60 images and the zoom
level is 150% or more (icon view), it immediately becomes slow,
unresponsive and consumes 100% CPU for a long time *after* all the
images are displayed. It does not matter if thumbnails need to be
generated or not (i.e. if they are pre-cached or not). Nautilus does not
crash, scrolling is possible, but is extremely jerky and quite unusable.
If I leave it for a while, or leave the folder entirely, CPU consumption
goes back to normal, and everything seems fine. When the zoom-level is
100% or less, the problem does not occur.

Ubuntu Hardy 8.04 with proposed updates enabled.
nautilus 1:2.22.3-0ubuntu2

Here's the top of an oprofile system report where profiling was started
right before loading an image folder in Nautilus (where all thumbnails
have already been generated and cached before), and stopped when
Nautilus CPU usage eventually goes down to normal. No other significant
things were using much CPU during profiling.

Seems like a lot of time is spent in libjpeg, even though all images
have already been loaded ! This gives a very poor user experience.
Perhaps new thumbnails are being generated behind the scenes, even
though it already displays the cached versions ?

  If I open a folder in Nautilus containing, say, 60 images and the zoom

  unresponsive and consumes 100% CPU for a long time *after* all the

2008-06-11 Thread Øyvind Stegard
Here you go, a back-trace :)

I think I've got all relevant debug-symbols included.

The crash is reproducible, but not straight-forwardly so, you have to
fiddle with browsing the SFTP-share a bit, going up folders, down
folders and copying some files. Doesn't take too long, though, before it
happens, and I can make it happen every time I try.

[Bug 212789] Re: gvfs fuse mount is not functional after logout and subsequent login

This bug is causing a security issue for me. I'm using pam_mount to unlock and

doesn't unmount and lock because fuse.gvfs has ~/.gvfs open. The script
suggested in comment #14 did not solve the issue.

Try it without the surrounding if-test, just use:

/bin/fusermount -zu $HOME/.gvfs 1/dev/null 21 || true

I fixed that myself, because the surrouding if-test will fail if the
gvfs fuse-daemon has died, which unfortunately happens quite often.

I'd like to add that the .gvfs mount point functionality sometimes (or
rather often) just breaks without reason (with transpoint endpoint not
connected error), even though no logout/login has been done. So it's a
more generic problem.

Daemon was started manually as regular user by issuing:
$  /usr/lib/gvfs/gvfs-fuse-daemon -d ~/.gvfs

The mount works fine from within Nautilus itself. Again, triggered by
listing the root directory of the mount using Firefox open file dialog
through ~/.gvfs. It can also by triggered by the open file dialog of any
other Gnome app, it seems. I crashed it using gedit as well (I know
gedit can open smb:// natively, but that's beside the point).

Note that doing:
$ ls ~/.gvfs/MOUNTNAME/

works as expected, and the daemon does not crash.

2008-04-27 Thread Øyvind Stegard
I am unable to reproduce the crash using the latest gvfs update from
hardy-proposed ((0.2.3-0ubuntu5). Opening files under ~/.gvfs with
Firefox works fine and no crash occurs in gvfs-fuse-daemon.

So this:
  * debian/patches/94_from_svn_fix_referencing_issues.patch:
- change from SVN, fix referencing issues leading to gvfsfuse crashes
  (lp: #211205)

seems to have fixed it, thanks :).

However, the latest update doesn't fix the logout/login problem. So this

unmounted on logout, so gvfs-fuse-daemon refuses to start on subsequent

[Bug 215484] Re: g-p-m does not honor its configuration for LCD brightness levels after multiple unplug-replug from AC

2008-04-22 Thread Øyvind Stegard
I'm seeing the exact same problem on my Lenovo Thinkpad Z61m. The
brightness is correctly dimmed when going from AC to battery, but is not
fully restored to 100% after plugging the AC back in. It increases, but
only up to level MAX-1 (90% or so, after *one* unplug/plug cycle). This
results in the behaviour described in this bug report, where the total
trend is overall decreasing brightness after many AC unplug/plug events.
It is very easy to reproduce.

$ gconftool -a /apps/gnome-power-manager/backlight
 idle_dim_battery = true
 idle_brightness = 30
 dpms_method_battery = default
 dpms_method_ac = default
 idle_dim_time = 30
 brightness_battery = 70
 enable = true
 idle_dim_ac = false
 battery_reduce = true
 brightness_ac = 100

Confirming that a work-around is to manually unmount the ~/.gvfs using:

[Bug 195180] Re: user-mountable (nfs) filesystems are not showing up in Computer view of nautilus

2008-04-21 Thread Øyvind Stegard
I've been bitten by this as well, after upgrading to Hardy. Although I
actually use CIFS, even though I only have Linux-boxes around. In Gutsy,
the fstab-mounts would show up in Nautilus, and allow one-click
mounting. No more it seems. Even worse is that the smb:/// protocol in
Nautilus/gvfs seems buggy at best, with duplicate entries showing up
when accessing a share, and problems connecting as my own user and not
guest/anonymous (which results in read-only access).

[Bug 194376] Re: Rhythmbox starts spinning after the connection to an sftp-server times out.

2008-02-26 Thread Øyvind
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem:
Rhythmbox is left on pause for 1-2 hours in the middle of a file played from an
sftp-server.
2.  the behavior you expected:
I expect Rhythmbox to continue playing the file and continue with the next one,
and otherwise behave normaly.
3. the behavior you actually encountered:
First i notice that Rhythmbox starts using all available cpu. When i start
playing the file the program behaves in one of the following ways:
I) Rhythmbox does not respond to mouse or keyboard input and must be closed,
II) Rhythmbox plays the parts of the file it still has i buffer and becomes
unresponsive like in I)
III) Rhythmbox plays the entire file which is all buffered and then
terminates/crashes with no error message.
I have tried to browse files on the sftp-server with the add folders menu if
the program is available for user input (before i try to unpause it) and the
message i get is something about a protocol-error.
The sftp-server I'm using is the standard sftp-server in the openssh-server
package in ubuntu 7.10.

and it never stops.

This bugs has similarities to a bug in previous versions of curl where
it keeps polling for more data even though it's told the connection is
down.

[Bug 111040] Re: compiz can't drag window thumbnails to other workspaces

2007-12-18 Thread Øyvind Grønnesby
I see the same behavior when I enabled visual effects. Not using
workspaces on a cube, just enabled normal visual effects. Had a
configuration with 4 virtual desktops in one row in the workspace
switcher and I can no longer drag and drop applications betweens the
desktops. There is no problem in switching between desktops and opening
new windows on it, though.

[Bug 41704] Re: wildcards should work with the search feature

2007-07-01 Thread Øyvind Stegard
I can't get any results at all when searching with wildcards in Nautilus
in Ubuntu Feisty .. I don't use Beagle or any other file content
indexer. Just slocate.

Query text: *.txt
Criterium: Location - /home

Zaroo results. Isn't this search feature supposed to support wildcards ?
If not, that's really horrible.

Using find on the command line works a lot better.

[Bug 33214] Re: gnome-screensaver restores default color-correction settings

2007-06-01 Thread Øyvind Stegard
The gamma-fading hack of gnome-screensaver breaks terribly with the
latest fglrx driver (8.37.6) from AMD/ATI on my hardware. Fading does
not work and gamma is reset to 0.1, which is the lowest possible. To fix
it, one must manually run xgamma -gamma 1 after gnome-screensaver has
done its fabulous fading-trick. Going to hack gnome-screensaver source
code and disable the fading all-together.
