[Bug 1892440] Re: Shell text with wrong size in mutter 3.36.4-0ubuntu0.20.04.2 (mostly on Nvidia)

2020-09-23 Thread Tim Cooper
Tested again from focal-proposed (mutter 3.36.6-1ubuntu0.20.04.2). Can
confirm it still fixes the problem! (Intel HD Graphics).

I should add, I don't have an NVIDIA card - intel integrated HD
graphics. As it stands, GNOME is a mess with differential scaling
everywhere some parts are smaller, some are larger (notably the menu
bar).

2020-08-25 Thread Tim Cooper
Also struggling since the latest mutter and/or gnome-shell update
(3.36.4). Font scaling is mismatched throughout the entire GUI. It's
larger than normal in the menu-bar, while it's smaller/squished in
terminal. This makes it difficult to fix. If I scale down to 0.9 to fix
the menu bar, text elsewhere is simply too small.

2017-10-04 Thread John Cooper
** Description changed:

Currently all of the other important utilities are included for
installation on Ubuntu. However currently though a Ubuntu Linux user, is
unable to perform an iOS device restore. In order to do so currently the
user needs to have some way of running an up to date iTunes software
with a usb connection to the iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch.

Which is quite a hassle to go through in order to completely reload the
device's iOS software. It would be much better if a binary compiled
version of the software (idevicerestore and libirecovery) could be
  included in the utilities package.

It would allow the Ubuntu user to be able to quickly and easily perform
software update or device restore functions. Without the need for a
virtual machine running a compatible version of Windows and iTunes etc.
While also saving them from having to run Wine, its dependencies, iTunes
  and its own software requirements.

All the would need is what is required to install idevicerestore and run
its actions (the appropriate iOS release download image file).

+ The code for idevice restore is available here

Re: [Bug 682752] dvi with .eps - either crashes (on startup) or images aren't displayed

2011-06-23 Thread Nicholas G Cooper
The issue in Natty is fixed.

In Natty Evince 2.32.0 is able to open up a .dvi with a .eps figure and
it works.
In Maverick Evince 2.32.0 crashes.
In Lucid with Evince 2.30.3 the .dvi opens up with no .eps figure
present, and no bounding box on where the image should be.

I tested the .eps in .dvi problem on two seperate computers with Natty
installed ( laptop and desktop ). Both have 64 bit Natty installed. I
have not tested Natty 32bit.

Thank you for the response

[Bug 713066] [NEW] New MSN contacts only found after restarting

2011-02-04 Thread Hereward Cooper
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: empathy

After adding a MSN account to empathy, requests to accept new contacts
only appear after a restart of the application.

During normal use new contact requests don't appear and I have to
restart empathy each time someone tells me they've tried adding me.

After restarting I can accept their request - however I still sometimes
have to restart empathy a second time for them to see me online and visa
versa (similar to bug #665838).

Cheers.

[Bug 622524] [NEW] See question; #122091; WNDA3100v2 still fails; ndiswrapper crashes system

2010-08-22 Thread cooper
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-nettool

With reference to question 122091; first, I thank the responder for the
advice and effort to that question.

This is an effort to get a Netgear USB WNDAv2 wireless to work with
Ubuntu 10.

1 - installed wine to extract the driver file from Netgear.
2 - downloaded WNDA3100v2 Software versions 1.7, 1.6, 1.2, 1.1 and 1.0. I did
this because wine would not extract 1.1 through 1.7. I finally settled on 1.0
which ran through the setup.exe routine in wine.
3 - copied the WinXP2000 file with the following files to /usr/local

 -rwxrwxr-x 1 ferk ferk 7427 2009-06-08 11:52 bcmh43xx64.cat
-rwxrwxr-x 1 ferk ferk 7450 2009-06-08 11:52 bcmh43xx.cat
-rwxrwxr-x 1 ferk ferk 747008 2009-05-05 12:00 bcmwlhigh564.sys
-rwxrwxr-x 1 ferk ferk 167298 2009-05-15 11:58 bcmwlhigh5.inf
-rwxrwxr-x 1 ferk ferk 632576 2009-05-05 12:00 bcmwlhigh5.sys

4 - installed the latest version of ndiswrapper from sourceforge.

5 - ran ndiswrapper -i bcmwlhigh5.inf

6 - command ndiswrapper -l indicated both the device and the driver were present
7 - loading the ndiswrapper did not solve the connection problem; the wireless
usb connection does not yet work. There is no output for wlan0 with the
iwconfig command. This shows no wireless device to be present.

8 - blacklisted the following in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf to avoid
any driver conflicts:

#conflict with ndsiwrapper
#(see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs/Driver/Ndiswrapper)
blacklist bcm43xx
blacklist b43
blacklist b43legacy
blacklist ssb

NOW, an additional problem has popped-up. - Not only does the WNDA3100
still not work but I need to blacklist ndiswrapper at startup. Reason
is that if the ndiswrapper module is loaded at boot, the main login
screen no longer opens and I cannot login to the system. I need to
boot into failsafe at the root level and blacklist ndiswrapper, then
reboot the system.

If the ndiswrapper module is loaded at boot, I cannot even use the GUI
failsafe mode as no login screen appears.

I have reinstalled the OS three times today. I can confirm absolutely
that the system is completely current and that blacklisting ndiswrapper
prior to booting is the core of the problem. It does not make any
difference if I install ndiswrapper from Synaptic or from Sourceforge.

This is still happening in the latests lucid beta. Does it have
something to do with the startup order that gdm is using?

[Bug 452884] [NEW] Rhytmbox generates multiple threads when the next song button is clicked

2009-10-16 Thread Peter Cooper
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

When playing a song and then skipping forward to the next song a new
thread is created (or the old thread is not terminated). This results in
a large number of threads being generated. See htop attachment.

[Bug 393659] [NEW] nautilus crashes viewing circular symlinks

2009-06-29 Thread Robbie Cooper
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

I was able to reproduce this bug using the following script:

mkdir dir
ln -s `pwd`/dir/link2 link1
ln -s `pwd`/link1 dir/link2
nautilus dir

Then refresh nautilus a couple times or move back and forth between another
directory and this one.
It seems to crash only when viewing the deeper symlink (dir/link2).

I thought it might be related to Bug #23641, but that one's quite old
and looks like it's been fixed already.

[Bug 334806] Re: nautilus disappear desktop icons and freeze open folders on jaunty

2009-05-01 Thread cooper
I've encountered this same bug in Jaunty and judging from posts on
Ubunutuforums I am not the only one running into the issue. Simply put,
if one clicks on a Desktop icon all icons on the Desktop disappear.
Also, clicking on the Desktop itself will no longer bring up a menu.

The panel functions continue to work. In my case, Awn continues to
work.

However, to retrieve the Desktop icons I need to reboot.

The problem appears randomly. Sometimes the system will run for an
entire session and all is well. Other times, it crashes on the first
click of a Desktop icon.

dbus-launch nautilus works correctly

System -amd64, dual monitors, NVIDIA 8500 GTS, Jaunty 9.04. This is not
a laptop.

[Bug 235217] Re: quit icon/menu item hangs X when clicked

2008-07-29 Thread Chris Cooper
I don't have this problem anymore.
It didn't happen every time, but I'd say it happened more than 1/2 the time
when I was having the problem.
To make the problem occur I either hit the red power button or just went
System-Quit.

[Bug 200804] Re: GL screensaver hangs when using multiple displays

2008-04-27 Thread Grahame Cooper
I am experiencing similar behaviour running Hardy on a Lenovo z61p
laptop with Mobility FireGL V5200 VGA controller and the ATI accelerated
graphics driver in dual head mode with a separate desktop on the
secondary display.

When the screensaver has been activated, once the main screen has become
fully blank, the secondary screen does not blank, but keeps the same
desktop showing. Moving the mouse or pressing shift have no effect, and
neither screen responds to mouse clicks (the cursor is still active and
will move across both screens).

I can recover by switching to a console and killing the gnome-
screensaver-gl-helper process. When I kill this process the first time,
another instance of the process is created (and the screen still does
not respond), but when I kill that second instance of the process, the
(Gnome) screens are active again.

Also, the Gnome screensaver preferences dialogue will not work when
operating in dual head mode. The dialogue box opens, but it hangs before
any content is displayed in the dialogue.

It all works fine in single head mode.

(Note, I am not using Compiz as that will not work in dual head mode.)

[Bug 176544] Re: gnome-power-manager: (user) suspend failed on Toshiba Portege R500

2008-03-31 Thread John Cooper
Looks like this now works under Hardy beta.

You need to add ehci_hcd to the SUSPEND_MODULES line in
/etc/pm/config.d/modules so I now have one line in the file:

SUSPEND_MODULES=kvm kvm_intel ehci_hcd

Thanks guys

[Bug 158164] Re: Fast user switch - logging in second user red-lines CPU

2007-12-07 Thread Adam Cooper
I'd like to add that I get very similar symptoms. I'm running Gutsy on
an Inspiron 5100 laptop that is shared between a family of four. I only
really noticed because after 2+ users are logged in the fan will kick in
and stay on permanently. Whereas usually it only come on every now and
then.

Checking top reveals that xorg is chugging away at 30%-70% cpu usage.

[Bug 160443] Weather applet should notice when the network is plugged in

2007-11-06 Thread John Cooper
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

I have the weather applet installed and when I go offline the icon and
temp is replaced with a ? which is what you would expect but when I
come back online I would expect the applet to notice and refresh. It
will refresh when it next has one due but that may be many hours away.

Something like the weather applet saying Oh the network is back. Was my
last update okay? No, then lets update now. Yes then I will ignore it.

[Bug 132992] Re: [gutsy] rhythmbox cannot load UPnP plugin: python-louie package missing

2007-10-12 Thread John Cooper
It would be nice if when I tried to enable the plugin rather than saying
just Error failed to load plugin it could say that this plugin
requires package python-louie and even nicer if it could have a button
to install that packge for you.

Perhaps there could be a change in the description on the plugin
manager, as a quick fix, to say make sure you have python-louie
installed before trying this package.

It all worked fine, for me, as soon a I installed python-louie but I had
to guess what to install and it was not obvious.

[Bug 150918] Setting the number of workspaces under compiz does not also set the keybindings

2007-10-09 Thread John Cooper
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

When I use desktop effects or compiz and adjust the number of workspaces
this change is not reflected in the gnome-keybindings-settings.

For example. If I had four workspaces and using the preferences in the
workplace shifter applet I increaced that to five. Now when I go to
System-Preferences-Keyboard Shortcuts there is no option to set a
keypress for WindowManagement-Move window to workspace 5 but there
are still options for 1-4. Similar if I reduce it to three there is
still the option for sending to workspace 4 which should not be there.

[Bug 42914] Freezes when formatting html mail and no internet connection.

2006-05-04 Thread John Cooper
Public bug reported:

Affects: evolution (Ubuntu)
   Severity: Normal
   Priority: (none set)
 Status: Unconfirmed

Description:
To reproduce:

1. Setup an network connection like a corporate LAN where internet
packets get lost and you have to wait for a time out, and turn off
your proxy setups.

2. View a HTML mail with images loaded from the internet.

3. Switch to antother message.

The Formatting message... alert will be fixed in the message bar and
you will not be able to view another mail till the connections for all
the images have timed out.

I think that when I click on antoher mail it should kill the html
rendering even if it is waiting on an image to download.

Note: The type of internet connection is important as this only happens
when packets that you send out to the internet get no replies and so
have to time out. This is probably a problem with our network setup but
could also be true for other people.

[Bug 40532] Naming of preferences not consistent

2006-04-21 Thread Paul Cooper
Public bug reported:

Affects: control-center gnome-control-center (Ubuntu)
   Severity: Normal
   Priority: (none set)
 Status: Unconfirmed

Description:
1. Plug in a usb audio device (e.g. Plantronics 400 DSP)
2. A message pops up with a link to (Breezy) or a button (Dapper) to 'Open
audio preferences'
3. However in the text it suggests opening System-Preferences-Sound (this is
what the link or button opens)

So the link/button says audio preferences but then that is opened says
Sound - either the link/button needs to be changed to 'Open sound
preferences' or the 'Sound Prefrences' capplet needs to be changed to
'Audio preferences'.
