[Bug 1768340] [NEW] fscrypt does not work for home directory encryption

2018-05-01 Thread Adar Dembo
Public bug reported:

I am trying to use fscrypt in place of ecryptfs to encrypt my home
directory, and to automatically unlock/lock it on login and logout. I am
using a fresh installation of Ubuntu 18.04 done on 05/01/18. The
hardware is a Dell Precision 5520 laptop. The version of the fscrypt and
libpam-fscrypt packages is 0.2.2-0ubuntu2.

I began with the instructions in https://github.com/google/fscrypt
#setting-up-fscrypt-on-a-directory. I quickly ran into bug #1754270, but
after applying the workaround from that bug report I was able to
successfully encrypt a directory. With that out of the way, I set up a
new encrypted home directory, copied all of my files into it with rsync,
then moved it on top of the old home directory.

When I logged out and logged back in, I was presented with a blank
screen. The cursor was visible and responded to trackpad motion. If I
clicked the top right of the screen, I saw the usual drop-down menu
containing power settings and the like. I didn't see any other responses
to clicks or keypresses. Hitting ctrl-alt-fn-f1 brought me back to the
login screen. If I tried to login again, this time the desktop came up
normally and everything appeared to be working.

All of this suggests some sort of broken interaction here between
pam_fscrypt.so and the rest of the desktop startup process. There are
some open upstream bugs [1][2] about this, but I don't know enough about
PAM and systemd to understand what might be at fault.

This is sufficiently inconvenient that I'd consider the "encrypt home
directory via fscrypt" workflow to be broken on Ubuntu 18.04 at this
time.

[Bug 1177285] Re: gnome-control-center crashes on fill_contact_info_grid: assertion failed: (spec != NULL) after few seconds after opening online accounts

2013-05-13 Thread Adar Dembo
Will someone be backporting this into raring? #1174936 and #1174740 are
possible duplicates.

[Bug 1177580] Re: empathy isn't activating indicator when a message is received

2013-05-13 Thread Adar Dembo
After restarting my Ubuntu VM, notifications appear to be working
properly. Well, at least I get a notification bubble, and a blue message
envelope, though I'm not seeing the change in the dock's "tiny triangle"
(item #2 from the list in the bug description).

I noticed that I had a 'telepathy-indicator' process running. When I
killed it and asked someone to IM me, I got the behavior I described in
the bug description. Then when I started it up again, notifications were
working properly.

So perhaps telepathy-indicator was crashing?

[Bug 1177580] [NEW] empathy isn't activating indicator when a message is received

2013-05-07 Thread Adar Dembo
Public bug reported:

The on message receipt notification behavior in empathy is semi-broken.
Just how broken depends on whether I have an open chat window with the
sender.

If the chat window is open:
1. I get a little notification bubble in the top-right corner containing the
name of the sender and the message.
2. The tiny triangle to the left of the empathy icon on the dock switches color
from white to blue.
3. The status icon in the entry for the sender in the empathy contact list
rapidly switches state back and forth.

Missing from all this is the message envelope indicator thing in the top
panel. It no longer turns blue, and the name of the sender no longer
appears as an entry in the indicator's menu.

If there was no chat window (or I've since closed it), all I get is #3
from the above list. This has caused me to miss a number of messages.

This is a regression: empathy was not broken like this in 12.10. It's
happened to me with both of my Google accounts; I haven't tested any
other accounts with it.
