I've done some debugging: http://askubuntu.com/questions/465412/how- can-i-debug-why-gnome-settings-daemon-localeexec-is-not-started-on-login My findings are that gnome-settings-daemon receives a SIGTERM when I login, shutsdown and it does not start again. I understand that this is not the intended behaviour. Should the SIGTERM be sent to gnome-settings-daemon in the first place? If so, why isn't it started again? I've attached the syslog with gnome-shell debug enabled. I've been able to capture the gnome-settings-daemon debug output just in case it is useful. Another workaround is the one described in comment #12 by panacier on bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-shell/+bug/1236749: C.Robinson (panacier) wrote on 2013-10-26: I hope this will help in resolving this issue - at lease for some. There are three possible login entries in the session menu accessible via cog to the left of the login button. Set option to system default instead of gnome or classic , extensions should now stay enabled after reboot. This has worked for me on two recent installs, including one I did earlier on today on which I am currentlly making this post.
